EVERYTHING TO LOSE: A REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY

GIVEAWAY ENDED
EVERYTHING TO LOSE
BY ANDREW GROSS
ABOUT THE BOOK:
A determined mother becomes entangled in a murderous conspiracy to keep a twenty-year-old secret buried in this blistering thriller, set during the tragic aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, from Andrew Gross, the New York Times bestselling author of 15 Seconds and No Way Back

While driving along a suburban back road, Hilary Cantor, who's just lost her job and whose deadbeat husband has left her to care for her son who has Asperger's, witnesses a freakish accident when a deer suddenly darts in front of the car ahead of her. The driver careens down a hill and slams into a tree. Rushing to help, she discovers the car smoking, the driver dead—and a satchel on the floor stuffed with a half million dollars.

That money could prevent her family's ruin and keep her son in school. In an instant, this honest, achieving woman who has always done the responsible thing makes a decision that puts her in the center of a maelstrom of unforeseeable consequences and life-threatening recriminations. It isn't long before someone comes looking for the money, and as they get closer and closer to Hilary, she is pulled into a terrifying scheme involving a twenty-year-old murder, an old woman whose entire life has been washed out to sea by the storm, and a powerful figure determined to maintain the secret that can destroy him.

With everything to lose and putting everything she loves at risk, Hilary joins up with a dogged police official from Staten Island who has his own connections to the money and is dealing with his family's tragic struggles in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. Together they must fight to bring down an enemy who will stop at nothing to keep buried what that money was meant to silence.

Everything to Lose is a propulsive thriller filled with tension and unexpected twists. Pitting an ordinary woman against powerful and desperate figures, this explosive and heartbreaking tale of suspense will appeal to readers of Harlan Coben, Lee Child, and David Baldacci.

MY THOUGHTS/REVIEW:
EVERYTHING TO LOSE by Andrew Gross is a book that I read a short bit about way before I got a copy but couldn’t remember the name. I kept looking for it only knowing a little about the theme of the mother finding money that would help her care for her child but couldn‘t find the book. When EVERYTHING TO LOSE came available, I was so excited! I also was glad to not be let down once I started this thriller. Gross has written a well developed character study that has characters you can relate to and feel for, as well as the setting built around the area hard hit by Hurricane Sandy.

When main character, Hilary Cantor, a single/divorced mother of a child with Asperger’s loses her job, her world is unraveling quickly. With debts rising, especially to pay for her son Brandon’s special needs, and her dead beat ex-husband Jim (who is written so well, I really disliked him so much!) too busy with a new family and his fancy cars to help, she is desperate. As the fates would have it, she witnesses an accident on a fairly deserted road at night when the car ahead of her crashes and rolls down a hill. Hilary runs to try and free the victim but not only finds him dead and unable to get him out of the car, but she finds a bag that could be the answer to all her problems. The tote is filled with bundles of hundred dollar bills. Thoughts race through her mind on what is the right thing to do. This money could save her son and fix all her financial problems. She must decide quickly as another witness has stopped and is rushing down the hill. Unable to make a decision, Hilary throws the bag into the woods so she can think about it more. From here, the story never lets you go as she tries to decide whether to get the money and if she does, what to do with it. Once her decision is made, a plan is in motion that she seems to have no way to stop.

This main plot line is just part of the story as other major characters like Rollie McMahon, Sheila O’Byrne, and New York Police Department Lieutenant Patrick Kelty enter Hilary’s tumultuous tale. With all of the twists and turns and how the narrative and storylines all come together, this captivating, suspenseful story will keep you turning pages until the end. EVERYTHING TO LOSE is a book that I loved and hated to put down and hope you enjoy it as well!

I am currently reading a book where one of the main character has so little time to decide on a crucial decision he makes a huge mistake, totally against what he stood for. Also, if I had been in the same situation, I would have considered the money as stolen and even though Hilary was in dire circumstances why did she go ahead and keep the money! This is very intriguing to me.
