"MARCH IS MAISIE MONTH" - ELEGY FOR EDDIE: A PREVIEW AND GIVEAWAY

The centerpiece of the "March is Maisie Month" is William Morrow with Harper Collin's Twitter Chat schedule. Every week in March they have had a new guest moderator for one-hour chats. This Friday, March 30th at 3pm, EST, Jacqueline Winspear herself will be part of the Twitter Chat. There is also a major blog tour that is covering the entire series this month. The book blogosphere has been buzzing about Maisie, and I hope everyone has had a chance to participate. If not, here is your chance...with Jacqueline Winspear's latest "Maisie" book, ELEGY FOR EDDIE!

ELEGY FOR EDDIE
A Maisie Dobbs Novel
BY JACQUELINE WINSPEAR
ABOUT THE BOOK:
Maisie Dobbs—psychologist, investigator, and "one of the great fictional heroines, equal parts haunted and haunting" (Parade)—returns in a chilling adventure, the latest chapter in Jacqueline Winspear's bestselling series.

Early April 1933. To the costermongers of Covent Garden—sellers of fruit and vegetables on the streets of London—Eddie Pettit was a gentle soul with a near-magical gift for working with horses. When Eddie is killed in a violent accident, the grieving costers are deeply skeptical about the cause of his death. Who would want to kill Eddie—and why?

Maisie Dobbs' father, Frankie, had been a costermonger, so she had known the men since childhood. She remembers Eddie fondly and is determined to offer her help. But it soon becomes clear that powerful political and financial forces are equally determined to prevent her from learning the truth behind Eddie's death. Plunging into the investigation, Maisie begins her search for answers on the working-class streets of Lambeth where Eddie had lived and where she had grown up. The inquiry quickly leads her to a callous press baron; a has-been politician named Winston Churchill, lingering in the hinterlands of power; and, most surprisingly, to Douglas Partridge, the husband of her dearest friend, Priscilla. As Maisie uncovers lies and manipulation on a national scale, she must decide whether to risk it all to see justice done.

The story of a London affected by the march to another war years before the first shot is fired and of an innocent victim caught in the crossfire, Elegy for Eddie is Jacqueline Winspear's most poignant and powerful novel yet.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Jacqueline Winspear was born and raised in the county of Kent, England. Following higher education at the University of London's Institute of Education, Jacqueline worked in academic publishing, in higher education, and in marketing communications in the UK.

She emigrated to the United States in 1990, and while working in business and as a personal / professional coach, Jacqueline embarked upon a life-long dream to be a writer.

A regular contributor to journals covering international education, Jacqueline has published articles in women's magazines and has also recorded her essays for KQED radio in San Francisco. She lives in California and is a regular visitor to the United Kingdom and Europe.

Jacqueline's novels thus far—
Maisie Dobbs, Birds of a Feather, Pardonable Lies, Messenger of Truth, An Incomplete Revenge, and Among the Mad are set in the late 1920s and early 1930s, with the roots of each story set in the Great War, 1914–1918. Her work has been nominated for numerous awards.

MY THOUGHTS/REVIEW:
From the Harper Collins' Website on ELEGY FOR EDDIE, is written:

In this latest entry in Jacqueline Winspear’s acclaimed, bestselling mystery series—“less whodunits than why-dunits, more P.D. James than Agatha Christie” (USA Today)—Maisie Dobbs takes on her most personal case yet, a twisting investigation into the brutal killing of a street peddler that will take her from the working-class neighborhoods of her childhood into London’s highest circles of power. Perfect for fans of A Lesson in Secrets, The Mapping of Love and Death, or other Maisie Dobbs mysteries—and an ideal place for new readers to enter the series—Elegy for Eddie is an incomparable work of intrigue and ingenuity, full of intimate descriptions and beautifully painted scenes from between the World Wars, from one of the most highly acclaimed masters of mystery, Jacqueline Winspear.

And so with my schedule WAY behind, I can't submit a full review at this time as I am just reading the book. I can tell you that I have always enjoyed Winspear's work before and think this will be no different as it has caught my attention right away. I am hoping to finish it this weekend. If you are a mystery fan, and especially a "Maisie Dobbs" fan, then you really want to read this one. ELEGY FOR EDDIE surely looks to be a good time filled with twists and turns that will keep us turning pages.

This book sounds particularly interesting because Maisie knows some of the people involved in the case personally. Corruption at a high and political level is part of the case which makes it touchy and dangerous. I'm extremely interested in how Maisie decides to handle this case.

Thank you for hosting this giveaway, it's fantastic!

The message from Jacqueline on her blog, about Elegy for Eddie, it's cover, the new website and the Maisie Dobb's blog, directing our attention the the info about the reading and research Jacqueline did to bring a sense of time and place to the book was wonderful, I thought. It shows how much she cares about her readers and giving them a book they'll enjoy as well as how much she enjoys writing.

I also love Jacqueline's essay about riding the train through Kent to Sussex which also sounds like she's traveled back in time to a beautiful, more refiined era!
