HEROES FOR MY DAUGHTER by BRAD MELTZER: A REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY

GIVEAWAY ENDED
HEROES FOR MY DAUGHTER
BY BRAD MELTZER

ABOUT THE BOOK:
An inspiring collection of heroes from whom our daughters can learn to lead a fulfilling and impactful life

In Heroes for MyDaughter, the New York Times bestselling author Brad Meltzer brings together the stories of fifty-five remarkable people, a diverse set of individuals from across time and from all walks of life: artists and inventors, scientists and explorers, who each dedicated their life to making our world a better place. From Eleanor Roosevelt to Amelia Earhart, Anne Frank to Randy Pausch, Theodore Roosevelt to Lucille Ball, Rosa Parks to the passengers on United Flight 93, the lives of these men and women offer lessons to guide our daughters on their journey to adulthood—lessons sure to inspire them as they take their place as citizens in our society and in the world. The stories told in Heroes for My Daughter are perfect for mothers and daughters to read and treasure together.

MORE ABOUT HEROES FOR MY DAUGHTER TAKEN FROM A Q&A FROM BRAD MELTZER'S WEBSITE HERE:
Q: Who were some of your heroes growing up?
My Mom and my grandfather.  After them, Jim Henson and Mr. Rogers always led the list.  Sure, there are tons of others in the book -- from Rosa Parks, to Gandhi, to Muhammad Ali -- but Jim Henson and Mr. Rogers just always had the biggest impact on me.  Maybe it was their kindness.  Maybe it was Kermit and that idea of “making millions of people happy.”  Maybe it was just my obsession with idealistic puppets.  But the idea of being the top of your game -- at the cutting-edge of entertainment -- and you can do anything, but instead, you give all of that to children’s public television…?  Yes.  My heroes.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Brad Meltzer is the number one New York Times bestselling author of The Inner Circle, The Book of Fate, and six other bestselling thrillers. He is also the host of the TV show Brad Meltzer's Decoded on the History Channel. He lives in Florida with his wife and three children. His sons prefer the book Heroes for My Son. His daughter prefers this one.

A PERSONAL NOTE FROM BRAD MELTZER:
Six years ago, my heart doubled in size as my daughter was born. And now, six years later, we're finally releasing my newest non-fiction book -- "Heroes For My Daughter."

Yes, it's been a few years since I did Heroes For My Son. And yes, my daughter kept demanding, "Where the heck's my book?" But over these past few years, as some of you may know, my mother passed away (after losing her battle with breast cancer). And in the past year, I also lost my Dad and my grandmother. It's been quite a year. And as I wrote this book, I was forced to look to the world for women (and a few men) who, like my mother, could serve as ideals for my daughter.

As you'll see, every hero in this book is a fighter. And as I tell my daughter in the introduction: "No matter what stage of life you’re in, when you want something—no matter how impossible it seems—you need to fight for it. When you believe in something, fight for it. And when you see injustice, fight harder than you’ve ever fought before.”

The heroes I share with her—and with all daughters—run from Rosa Parks, to Christopher Reeve...from Marie Curie to Lucille Ball...from Joan Ganz Cooney, who helped create Sesame Street, to Shelia Spicer, my eighth grade English teacher.

In the end, though, the most important page in here is the last one -- because it's blank. It says "Your Hero's Photo Here" and "Your Hero's Story Here." And I promise you, you take a photo of your Mom, or Grandmother, or teacher, or a military member of your family -- and you put their picture in here -- and write one sentence of what they mean to you -- and that will be the most beautiful page in Heroes For My Daughter.

When you're done, I think you'll see, because it's for my daughter...because I lost both my parents in the process...this is the most emotional book I've ever written.

So thank you for letting me share these heroes with you.

MY THOUGHTS/REVIEW:
Known world wide for his best-selling thriller novels, as well as his graphic novel work, Brad Meltzer has of late become known for the two books in his “Heroes” series as a wise and loving parent. The latest HEROES FOR MY DAUGHTER is the follow-up to HEROES FOR MY SON but I choose to think that both books are fairly interchangeable. Teaching lessons through the study of the lives of others, Meltzer writes brief but inspiring stories about people who have made a difference. Some names are better known than others at first glance but none will be forgotten once you read their story. One of the nicest parts is that this is a book that you can read in parts or out of order even, or if like me, you sit down and read straight through as you find one story more fascinating than the last.

Written as stated for Meltzer’s daughter, HEROES FOR MY DAUGHTER, makes a lovely gift to a daughter but also for any occasion, especially Mother’s Day coming up soon. Stories of people like Marie Curie, Rosa Parks, Christopher Reeve, and Golda Meir to name just a few, will inspire and educate while also entertain. Even some names you might not have suspected wind up in there like The Three Stooges! There is even a blank page at the end of the book so one can add a family name of inspiration to the reader. However, not only are the more common heroes written about but also names you may not know, or a group such as the Heroes of United Flight 93, can be found within. From Ella Fitzgerald to Sally Ride, HEROES FOR MY DAUGHTER makes a perfect book for oneself as well as for a gift to others dear to you, especially a daughter.

The books have even spawned a clothing line from the estates of Amelia Earhart, Muhammad Ali, and Lucille Ball, so go HERE for more information on that.

  3. I have a six year old son that was introduced to the events of 9/11 at school. Now he wants to know EVERYTHING! The fact that Brad included heroes on Flight 93 reminds me that not everything is smoke and sorrow. This is my favorite part of Heroes for my Daughter.
