AN EXCERPT FROM WHITE HORSE:

When I wake, the world is still gone. Only fragments remain. Pieces of places and people who were once whole. On the other side of the window, the landscape is a violent green, the kind you used to see on a flat-screen television in a watering hole disguised as a restaurant. Too green. Dense gray clouds banished the sun weeks ago, forcing her to watch us die through a warped, wet lens.

There are stories told among pockets of survivors that rains have come to the Sahara, that green now sprinkles the endless brown, that the British Isles are drowning. Nature is rebuilding with her own set of plans. Man has no say.

It’s a month until my thirty-first birthday. I am eighteen months older than I was when the disease struck. Twelve months older than when war first pummeled the globe. Somewhere in between then and now, geology went crazy and drove the weather to schizophrenia. No surprise when you look at why we were fighting. ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Alex Adams was born in New Zealand, raised in Greece and Australia, and currently lives in Oregon–which is a whole lot like New Zealand, minus those freaky-looking wetas. Her debut novel, White Horse (Emily Bestler Books/Atria) hits shelves April 17, 2012. Her fingers are crossed that the world won’t end before then.

AN INTERVIEW WITH ALEX ADAMS:
Welcome, and thank you for agreeing to an interview for BOOKIN‘ WITH BINGO. Is there any personal information you would like to start out with today?
Thanks for having me here! Personal information...wow. I never know what to say. I grew up in New Zealand, Australia and Greece, but the US is my home base now. I started out wanting to be a forensic psychologist, but took a weird turn somewhere along the way and fell in love with storytelling. White Horse is my first published novel, but there are a handful of manuscripts lurking in the dark corners of my hard drive. They're all varying degrees of "not quite there." In that I'm much like most authors, really. Also, I like cats and dogs equally.

How did the title of your book come about?
White Horse was on my original list of potential titles but I abandoned it along the way, for reasons I don't even recall now. Just before she began the submissions process, my agent sent me a news article about the apocalypse and its four horsemen along with one question: How about White Horse? It was one of those moments when things clicked and I instantly knew she was right.

Do you see yourself in your characters? Which characters are easiest or more difficult to write?
I don't, but friends have commented on a tiny similarity here and there. Most of the comparisons pertain to my sense of humor. They (characters, not my friends) all come from inside my head, so I guess that's unavoidable.

As far as writing ease goes, Villains are the trickiest to write. There's a fine line between terrifying and comical. Supporting characters come more easily to me. There's less riding on them, yet they add depth to the piece. You can really have fun tinkering with a scene, changing the tone, just by altering a supporting character's personality.

What books would you say have made the biggest impression on you, especially starting out? What are you currently reading?
All of them! For a while there, I launched into every new book determined to learn something about storytelling and writing. And I did. Even the books I liked the least left behind indelible marks. I read widely, and continue to do so.

Right now I'm working my way through Karen Marie Moning's Fever series, and I'm about to start Clavell's Shogun. For some reason lately I've been in the mood for a huge, meaty saga.

What is the next or current book/project you are working on?
Right now I'm wrapping up Red Horse, which will be book two of the trilogy. I'm also working on a short story for my German publisher, Piper Verlag. It's a prequel to White Horse, of sorts.

What is something about you that you would want people to know about you that we probably don’t know?
My writing is much, much darker than I am.

What is your advice to anyone, including young people, who want to be writers?
For young writers, in particular, I say get out there and live. Nothing fills the creativity well like experiencing life. Be curious about everything and never turn down an opportunity to learn.
