TO KILL THE DUKE
TO KILL THE DUKE
BY SAM MOFFIE
ABOUT THE BOOK:
It was the 1950's. The white-hot Cold War was raging between The USA and The USSR. And, in Joseph Stalin's mind, nothing would be quite as hot as assassinating the ultimate symbol of Western machismo culture—the actor John Wayne. Thus, the elite Russian spy squad of Zavert, Boris Gila, Alexei Aleksandra and Ivan Viznapu start on a dangerous and hysterical mission that brings them into contact with the gangsters Mickey Cohen and Johnny Stompanato, the billionaire Howard Hughes, the producer/director Dick Powell, the actress Susan Hayward, countless others, and of course the big man himself—John Wayne.
What transpires is as zany as John Wayne playing a role that was written for Marlon Brando... whoops! That really happened, and the result was “The Conqueror,” which plays a prominent role in To Kill the Duke, Moffie's fifth novel. Brilliantly satiric, the book also captures political duplicity and amorality, which makes it all too relevant to today’s world. The Cold War, more than ready for prime time satire, lets Moffie keep the heat on the establishment and, most of all, those in authority.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Sam Moffie was the victim of a hit-and-run accident in 2006. But Sam isn’t one to wallow in self pity. As he recuperated, his long-held dream of becoming a fiction writer started percolating in his brain. Not having much to do, he decided to test the publishing waters by sending out the first 20 pages of Kurt Vonnegut’s “Breakfast of Champions” to a variety of the top houses around. Every single publisher rejected it, and only Vonnegut’s own publisher recognized it!Realizing that his personal brand of social satire, humor and quirkiness would also land in the slush pile, he decided to self publish, and he hasn’t looked back. Every single book he’s written has won awards, and he has garnered thousands of fans. If you'd like to see him take a turn as Groucho Marx, as per "The Book of Eli," go HERE.
AN EXCERPT FROM TO KILL THE DUKE:
THE COLD WAR didn’t start out very cold. It was a hot, sizzling war when both Russia and the United States started obsessing over which society would rule the world after the surviving society had annihilated the other via nuclear bombs.
Long before Stalin was coming up with film festivals and decadent viewers, Hughes was thinking about cornering the market in metal dinner trays; Powell was appeasing Oscar Millard; Mr. Zavert was gathering information on his opponents; Viznapu was standing in cold lines; Gila was learning to become a chef; Aleksandra was learning to kill; Wayne was thinking of playing a barbarian; the United States was actively detonating nuclear bombs at its top-secret Nevada test site.
A lot of bombs.
Sure, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics was doing it as well. Somewhere between the time Stalin started his debauchery-filled film festivals at the end of World War II, right up to the present.
But there was a difference.
A big difference.
The Russians were not detonating their bombs near populated areas.
The Americans were.

ReplyDeleteMention of the cold war brings back memories of fall-out shelters and air raid drills (duck and cover) in school. Scary times for us kids in the 50s. Book sounds fascinating - love a good satire.

I like this excerpt from Sam's website: "They didn’t pay attention to the fine print, which showed that I-131 radioiodine from the bombs would probably float through the air to places close by, and infect up to 2,300 people with thyroid problems — eventually killing at least 120!"
ReplyDeleteI never read anything about this but did know the bombs were spreading "death" from the blasts.
