About APRIL & OLIVER:
Best friends since childhood, the sexual tension between April and Oliver has always been palpable. Years after being completely inseparable, they become strangers, but the wildly different paths of their lives cross once again with the sudden death of April's brother. Oliver, the responsible, newly engaged law student finds himself drawn more than ever to the reckless, mystifying April - and cracks begin to appear in his carefully constructed life. Even as Oliver attempts to "save" his childhood friend from her grief, her menacing boyfriend and herself, it soon becomes apparent that Oliver has some secrets of his own--secrets he hasn't shared with anyone, even his fiancé. But April knows, and her reappearance in his life derails him. Is it really April's life that is unraveling, or is it his own? The answer awaits at the end of a downward spiral...towards salvation.

THE CEMETERY DANCE
and
THE SCARECROW
****************************
THE CEMETERY DANCE
BY
DOUGLAS PRESTON
& LINCOLN CHILD
DESCRIPTION:
Pendergast-the world's most enigmatic FBI Special Agent-returns to New York City to investigate a murderous cult.

William Smithback, a New York Times reporter, and his wife Nora Kelly, a Museum of Natural History archaeologist, are brutally attacked in their apartment on Manhattan's Upper West Side. Eyewitnesses claim, and the security camera confirms, that the assailant was their strange, sinister neighbor-a man who, by all reports, was already dead and buried weeks earlier. While Captain Laura Hayward leads the official investigation, Pendergast and Lieutenant Vincent D'Agosta undertake their own private-and decidedly unorthodox-quest for the truth. Their serpentine journey takes them to an enclave of Manhattan they never imagined could exist: a secretive, reclusive cult of Obeah and vodou which no outsiders have ever survived.

THE SCARECROW
BY
MICHAEL CONNELLY

DESCRIPTION:
Forced out of the Los Angeles Times amid the latest budget cuts, newspaperman Jack McEvoy decides to go out with a bang, using his final days at the paper to write the definitive murder story of his career. He focuses on Alonzo Winslow, a 16-year-old drug dealer in jail after confessing to a brutal murder. But as he delves into the story, Jack realizes that Winslow's so-called confession is bogus. The kid might actually be innocent. Jack is soon running with his biggest story since The Poet made his career years ago. He is tracking a killer who operates completely below police radar--and with perfect knowledge of any move against him. Including Jack's.

INTERVIEWING LAUREN LIPTON

AN INTERVIEW WITH

LAUREN LIPTON
AUTHOR OF THE MATING RITUALS
OF THE NORTH AMERICAN WASP

Welcome to BOOKIN’ WITH BINGO Lauren Lipton. Thank you for doing this interview while I have THE MATING RITUALS OF THE NORTH AMERICAN WASP on Tour. Maybe your publicist can tell us just who is Lauren Lipton?

Lauren Lipton is the author of two novels, It’s About Your Husband and Mating Rituals of the North American WASP. She is also a freelance journalist who specializes in lifestyle, fashion, business and trend stories.

Her work has appeared in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, In Style Weddings, Martha Stewart Weddings, Forbes Woman and many other publications, and on National Public Radio’s All Things Considered. She began her career at the Los Angeles Times.

She lives in New York City and in Litchfield County, Conn., where Mating Rituals of the North American WASP is set.

Her website is: www.laurenlipton.com

OK. Now, Lauren, what is the next or current book you are working on?

I am working on a novel of manners that’s more literary and ambitious than my first two. I don’t want to give too much away, but it’s based on a classic American novel. My version is set in New York during the new Gilded Age—the decade between 1996 and 2006, before the economic collapse.

What have you just finished reading?

My first two novels are romantic comedies, but when reading for pleasure, I crave darkness and intensity. I’m in the middle of The Last Life by Claire Messud, about a French-American teenager in Algeria whose life goes to pieces after her grandfather shoots at one of her friends. On deck is American Pastoral by Philip Roth, because my dad just finished it and recommended it. The most memorable novel I’ve read in the past six months is The Plague by Albert Camus—definitely not a beach read.

What books would you say have made the biggest impression on you, especially starting out?

The list begins with every great children’s book set in Manhattan, including A Cricket in Times Square, Freaky Friday and From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. They made this misplaced Southern California girl believe New York City was the most enchanted place in the world, the place where everything happens, which I still believe is true. They also taught me the elements of good storytelling, because I read them over and over, and analyzed them.

The adult books that have most impacted me as a writer are novels-of-manners that combine galloping plots, social satire and memorable characters who do terrible things to each other. I still love stories set in New York City, too. Off the top of my head: The House of Mirth and The Custom of the Country by Edith Wharton, People Like Us and The Two Mrs. Grenvilles by Dominick Dunne, The Bonfire of the Vanities by Tom Wolfe. Joan Didion’s exquisite, unsentimental memoir The Year of Magical Thinking is a masterpiece of emotional and literary restraint. And no one does hilarity and misery better than consummate New York wit Dorothy Parker. The Portable Dorothy Parker, her collected poetry, short stories and literary criticism, is a joy.

What gets you started on a new book? A character or story idea or….?

So far there’s no pattern. The plot and character came simultaneously for my first book, It’s About Your Husband, about a laid-off woman who decides on a whim to become a private eye, thinking, “How hard could it be?”—and is terrible at it. Mating Rituals of the North American WASP started with the idea: A woman enters into a mismatched marriage of convenience with a quiet, repressed Connecticut preppy. Then I had to figure out what kind of woman would be the least like a quiet, repressed Connecticut preppy: An anxious, talkative city girl, of course.

What is something about you that you would want people to know about you that we probably don’t know?

I take seriously every reader review on book blogs and sites like Amazon and Goodreads. I appreciate all of them, even the critical ones, because I always learn something that makes my writing better. So, to everyone who has taken the time to write a review, thank you. Truly.

What is your best advice to anyone, including young people, who want to be writers?

Approach writing the way you would any other job. Study it intensely. Get a degree in English or Comparative Literature. If a book really speaks to you, read it twice, three times, ten times, to figure out how the author put it together. After college, enroll in writers’ workshops so you can get feedback on your work. Consider the feedback without being defensive, especially if the same criticisms show up often. Study the publishing business: Sites like PublishersMarketplace and Publishers Weekly will help you learn what kinds of books get sold and who the major players are in the industry.

What is something you would like to share with us about writing?

Never try to write in someone else’s style. A true writer has a unique voice. When you find yours, your writing will feel natural, not forced. Be true to it. It’s who you are.

ALL OF ME by Lori Wilde: An Interview With "Bingo"

ALL OF ME

by Lori Wilde

AN INTERVIEW
WITH "BINGO"

MEET THE AUTHOR: Lori Wilde

LORI WILDE
: AN INTERVIEW
WITH "BINGO"

Welcome, Lori to BOOKIN’ WITH BINGO. Thank you for helping with our Tour of ALL OF ME. What kind of things have you been working on currently?

I’ve started a new open-ended series for Avon about a small town in Texas. The first book comes out in November and it’s called The Sweethearts’ Knitting Club. The second book is called True Love Quilting Club. Here’s a short blurb for the series.

Twilight, Texas (pop. 6,000) is a quaint tourist town on the banks of the Brazos River that feeds in Lake Twilight. With its stately courthouse, surrounded by lovingly refurbished buildings of old west style architecture, Texas Monthly voted Twilight the Prettiest Town Square in Texas. The combination of the pristine blue lake and the intriguing history—Jesse James reportedly used hidden river caves near Twilight as a hideout—lends a magical air to this quirky, but close-knit community filled with warmth and small town camaraderie. In the summer months, tourists flock to Twilight drawn by the water, the odd little curio shops, acclaimed community theatre and lively town events.

Twilight was founded in 1875. How the town got its name is a subject of heated debate, but the prevailing legend among romantics involves two teenage sweethearts separated during the War Between the States. Circumstances tore them asunder, but they never stopped loving each other. Fifteen years later, they met again at twilight on the banks of the river in the spot where the town now stands. A statue in their honor has been erected in the park next to the town square.

There’s a rumor that if you throw pennies into the park’s fountain you will be reunited with your high school sweetheart. Because of this romantic legend, Twilight has been nicknamed Sweetheart Town. Many reunited high school lovers come to Twilight to get married and in fact, there is thriving matchmaking business in town, focusing exclusively on helping people reconnect with long lost loves.

The heart and soul of Twilight resides in the local knitting club, a group consisting mostly of town matriarchs who not only give advice and counsel to town citizens, but they also provide comic relief and run interference for star-crossed lovers. These older women will appear in every book and with their meddling, entertaining and good-natured ways, will serve as mentors, allies, threshold guardians, and tricksters.

What have you just finished reading?

Black Out by Lisa Unger. She’s an amazing writer.

What books would you say have made the biggest impression on you, especially starting out?

To Kill a Mockingbird, Lonesome Dove, The Thornbirds, A Prayer for Owen

Meany, The Stand, Tom Sawyer, The Grapes of Wrath, just to name a few.

What gets you started on a new book? A character or story idea or….?

Sometime it’s a character, sometimes it’s a story idea.

What is something about you that you would want people to know about you that we probably don’t know?

At the time, I was the youngest person in the state of Texas ever admitted into a

licensed vocational nursing program. I was sixteen.

What is your best advice to anyone, including young people, who want to be writers?

Read, read, read, write, write, write, never, ever give up.

What is something you would like to share with us about writing ALL OF ME or writing in general?

Don’t confuse me with the characters. The characters in All of Me hold a political viewpoint that is not my own, but I had to be true to who they are. Some readers however don’t get that. I’ve received hate mail because of characters’ political beliefs. I have to say it’s been very shocking to be personally attacked for beliefs that belong to fictional people. I’ve learned my lesson. From now on all my characters will have no political views.

BOOKIN' BINGO'S REVIEW:ALL OF ME

ALL OF ME
BY LORI WILDE
A REVIEW BY "BINGO"

Lori Wilde's ALL OF ME is a Wilde wild ride and a fabulous, thoughtful, yet fun read! Pop this one in your tote and take it to the beach or you will wish you had. Having Jillian Samuels and Tuck Manning with you, will make your day! Jillian is a lawyer and finds herself headed to Salvation, Colorado, after leaving her job when the new boss turns out to be someone from her past she would just as soon stays in her past. Add to that her long time mentor, Blake Townsend, has died and it is more than she can take, feeling once again abandoned, and so decides that all she needs to do is find a place to start over. So when Jillian inherits a lovely cottage in Colorado from Blake, she decides to take it and that this is as good a place to start over than any other. Getting out of Houston is what is important to her now and the name of the town, Salvation,is a good omen. She can easily pass the Colorado bar exam and set up a quiet practice in those glorious mountains and leave Texas and all the bad memories behind. Unfortunately, Jillian doesn't know that with the house comes a man who is living there already.

Following a sabbatical from being a successful career as an architect to care for his wife, Aimee, who is dying, to say Tuck Manning's life goes through a devastating change is being kind. He decides after his wife's death that spending his time in this cottage on the lake that meant so much to them, in the quiet, decent town of Salvation is just what his torn apart world needs. Prior to Jillian's showing up, Blake, who was Aimee's dad, had deeded the house to Tuck. Tuck in turn gave the deed and paperwork to an elderly lawyer in town. Unfortunately, the deed was never filed and the lawyer can't find it. When Jillian shows up on his doorstep, he isn't budging as the last thing he needs is yet another change and upheaval in his life! Besides, the place means too much to him. Jillian also feels the same way as the cottage has come to mean a new start and "salvation" for her torn apart past.

Both Tuck and Jillian seem to have legitimate claims on the house so they decide to share the cottage and live like roommates until they can iron out the mess and find out who the house really belongs to. Neither of them could possibly foresee the path their lives are about to go down next, or that it will be together in far more than a "roomy" way. Both Jillian and Tuck have been hurt. Jillian has lived a life where no fairy tales come true and studying law was right for her with its cut and dried, overall detached emotional practices. Tuck, even after two years hasn't found what he needs to come to terms with losing Aimee and the cottage they spent many good times in is certainly not something he wants to let go of.

However, neither Tuck nor Jillian can ignore the changing feelings and chemistry they begin to feel as the roommates await the lawyer's findings. ALL OF ME is the fourth in a series by Lori Wilde, I found out, but it certainly stands well on its own. I think from what I have read that going back and reading the first three books would certainly give a reader a long history of the characters and how the Wedding Veil Wishes books became such a popular series! An enjoyable read and much more to it than I thought when I first saw this book. I was pleasantly surprised as I became caught up with the depth of the characters and cared about what happened to them. Kudos to Ms. Wilde for what for me will be the first, but for most just another, of her wonderful, well written novels.

Don't forget to enter for a chance to win ALL OF ME right here! Click to go to post to enter!

MR. POPPER'S PENGUINS
AUDIO BOOK
written by
Richard and Florence Atwater
Read by Nick Sullivan

Oh, where could you have been if you have not read, heard read, read about, or read to someone, MR. POPPER'S PENGUINS??? As the Newbery Medal Honor Book of 1939, MR. POPPER'S PENGUINS resonates today just as it did then. When Richard Atwater died before he finished writing this classic, his wife Florence finished it for him. Together they were honored with the prestigious award. Parents have read this to the children, teachers have taught entire themed lessons around this wonderful classic. IF for some reason you have missed this story, then you are indeed in for a treat!

Mr. and Mrs. Popper live with their two children, Janie and Bill, in a town called Stillwater. Mr. Popper is a fairly good house painter but he does tend to daydream a lot about his favorite topic, Arctic explorers and the ice all around the North and the South Poles. Mrs. Popper and the children don't always understand Mr. Popper's daydreams, but that doesn't seem to bother him. Mr. Popper even wrote to Admiral Drake, who is exploring the South Pole.

Then one day Mr. Popper finds out that Admiral Drake read his letter and is sending him a gift. When a crate is delivered, Mr. Popper opens it and you guessed it, out hops a penguin! Mr. Popper is immediately taken with the little flightless guest and names him Captain Cook! Little Cook is cute, curious, and cunning. This description isn't unusual as one will note there is a good bit of alliteration in the story. However, Captain Cook although he is treated well with the Poppers walking him and fixing their refrigerator for him, still gets rather down and depressed. A call to the local zoo for help brings what the doctor, or the Captain needed...a friend--a female friend named Gerta. She quickly cheers him up and as one can guess, soon the pair of penguins present Popper with presents...eggs that turn into ten happy, hoppy, healthy, house guests! BUT Mr. Popper finds that caring for his LARGE family now takes more money than he has. What to do?

SPOILER ALERT!!!!!

Mr. Popper presents a way for the penguins to not only bring in some money but they become celebrities as well as they are taught to perform and they "hit the road" to become stars. Unfortunately, these stars are only allowed certain places and venues so when jealous fellow performers cause problems, Mr. Popper winds up in jail for going to the wrong theater. Who comes to his rescue? You guessed it! Admiral Drake. It is then that Popper has to make a big decision...let the stars go to Hollywood or with Drake to the North Pole to have penguin families develop there and make Popper's Penguins really happy.

Finally, Mr. Popper does what is best for the penguins and let's them go with Drake. The final surprise comes when Mr. Popper get his long time dream as he is invited to go along too. This is a story from 1939 that was an award winner then and still a winner today. Children still love it, teachers still use it, parents still read it, adults still recall it...so give Mr. Popper a listen on this excellently, lively read, audio book and once again enjoy the charming MR. POPPER'S PENGUINS!
