HOW TO TUCK IN A SUPERHERO BLOG TOUR and REVIEW

HOW DO YOU TUCK IN A SUPERHERO?
And Other Delightful Mysteries of Raising Boys
BY RACHEL BALDUCCI

ABOUT THE BOOK:

When Rachel Balducci looks for material for her writing, she doesn't have to look far. Her subject matter can be found climbing through the window, hanging on to the edge of the roof, and always at the refrigerator. Here she chronicles the exuberant, awesome life of boys through conversations overheard, rules she's been forced to make, and the many episodes of boy behavior that continue to mystify mothers worldwide. From the care and feeding of her team, to travels out in public, to their wide-eyed adoration of Walker, Texas Ranger, this laugh-out-loud celebration joyfully explores the sweet and wild side of boyhood. (Description thanks to Amazon.com)

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Rachel Balducci is a writer and the mother of five lively boys. Her website, www.testosterhome.net, has been nominated for several awards. Rachel is a former staff writer for the Augusta Chronicle and has been published in numerous magazines, including Good Housekeeping, Faith and Family, and The Word Among Us. She and her family live in Augusta, Georgia.

REVIEW:

HOW DO YOU TUCK IN A SUPERHERO? by Rachel Balducci is subtitled “And Other Delightful Mysteries of Raising Boys” and delightful it is! If you aren’t the parent of a boy or two, you don’t know what you are missing but this book will give you some idea. As the parent of a boy, I laughed right along with Rachel and this short, sweet and amusing book about life in the author’s home with her five sons. This is not a “how-to” book unless it is how-to laugh!

As Balducci shares some amusing tales about her life raising boys, readers will enjoy the stories and many will relate. For those parents with several children, especially boys, they will REALLY relate. However, I think even if you have no children, or one child like I do, you will enjoy this charmingly funny book. I also think that parents of girls will appreciate what is happening and enjoy comparing raising girls to raising boys.

I do think that for the most part, this book is more for mothers and so would be especially nice to have with Mother’s Day coming soon. However, everyone will enjoy reading about Rachel’s life and how she handles this clan. One thing she does is tell about her list of rules that she thought she never would have been the kind of parent to make such a list. The list includes some rules like:
--“You must never shut your brother in the refrigerator”
--“Spray paint is only for art projects”
--“Never play with fire”
….and some more specific like…“Do NOT hogtie you brother and drag him across the yard on your bicycle, even if he claims he is having a blast”.

I think that Balducci accomplished what she set out to do and that was to not only give the readers a fun and entertaining look at her life with all those boys, but also an enjoyable book where one can realize how much she loves her family. Most importantly, readers will realize through the humorous short stories the author tells that above all else, and no matter what the make up of your family is, that as parents, especially mothers, we know how blessed we really are when it comes right down to it. The very end of Rachel’s last story is one that I think will stay with you for a very long time. Win or buy the book and you will see what I mean.

Available April 2010 at your favorite bookseller from Revell, a division of Baker Publishing Group.

A CHANGE IN ALTITUDE: REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY

GIVEAWAY ENDED
A CHANGE IN ALTITUDE

BY ANITA SHREVE

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Margaret and Patrick have been married just a few months when they set off on what they hope will be a great adventure-a year living in Kenya. Margaret quickly realizes there is a great deal she doesn't know about the complex mores of her new home, and about her own husband.

A British couple invites the newlyweds to join on a climbing expedition to
Mount Kenya, and they eagerly agree. But during their harrowing ascent, a horrific accident occurs. In the aftermath of the tragedy, Margaret struggles to understand what happened on the mountain and how these events have transformed her and her marriage, perhaps forever.

A Change in Altitude
illuminates the inner landscape of a couple, the irrevocable impact of tragedy, and the elusive nature of forgiveness. With stunning language and striking emotional intensity, Anita Shreve transports us to the exotic panoramas of Africa and into the core of our most intimate relationships.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

ANITA SHREVE began writing fiction while working as a high school teacher. Although one of her first published stories, "Past the Island, Drifting," was awarded an O. Henry Prize in 1975, Shreve felt she couldn't make a living as a fiction writer so she became a journalist. She traveled to Africa, and spent three years in Kenya, writing articles that appeared in magazines such as Quest, US, and Newsweek. Back in the United States, she turned to raising her children and writing freelance articles for magazines. Shreve later expanded two of these articles — both published in the New York Times Magazine — into the nonfiction books Remaking Motherhood and Women Together, Women Alone. At the same time Shreve also began working on her first novel, Eden Close. With its publication in 1989, she gave up journalism for writing fiction full time, thrilled, as she says, with "the rush of freedom that I could make it up."

Since
Eden Close Anita Shreve has written eleven other novels: Strange Fits of Passion, Where or When, Resistance, The Weight of Water, The Pilot's Wife, Fortune's Rocks, The Last Time They Met, Sea Glass, All He Ever Wanted, Light on Snow, A Wedding in December and, most recently, Body Surfing. In 1998 Shreve received the PEN/L. L. Winship Award and the New England Book Award for fiction

MY REVIEW:

In Anita Shreve's newest work, now out in paperback, A CHANGE IN ALTITUDE, Margaret and Patrick have only been married a short time when they move to Kenya so that Patrick can practice medicine. His area of exper
tise is that of equatorial medicine that obviously lends itself to the area that they move to. The time period is the 1970s and Anita Shreve is at her always wonderful, narrative best as she tells of the treacherous mountain hike Margaret and Patrick make up Mount Kenya. Margaret's instincts are wary and she doesn't have good feelings about it even before they start.

They plan the climb with their landlord and his wife, Arthur and Diana, and friends of Diana's, Saartje and Willem. Margaret isn't fond of their pretentious landlord or happy when Willem begins to tell of all the possible dangers they will encounter like the physical side-effects and weather problems. They make a trial hike to get used to things and although Margaret is still uncomfortable with it, she does admit the scenery is glorious as they experience the African horizons. Their pleasure doesn't last long, however, as Margaret is attacked by fire ants that leave stings so intense that she actually has to rip off her clothing. Margaret should have taken this as an omen but instead she goes ahead with the climb.

The actual climb is hardest on Margaret and she is always the slowest in the group. You have to give her credit, I guess, but I believe I would have never have gone in the first place. One horrendous thing after another happens making it a tortuous time which ranges from political arguments, to one of their party winding up romantically interested in another, to an event so unexpected and shocking that all the rest seemed insignificant. Following the tragedy, Margaret questions herself as she thinks a small and harmless action on her part may have prompted the whole disaster.

Subsequently, Margaret tries to recover and proceed with a normal life but her life is changed forever. One thing after another seems to happen and it appears as if nothing will ever be the same, and her marriage is effected as a result. The amount of stress Margaret endures give the reader such empathy for her that they will read on if for no other reason than to see what happens to her.

Anita Shreve has given readers another wonderfully crafted story with beautifully descriptive vignettes and scenery especially in Africa. However, although you do feel sympathetic for Margaret, I myself was frustrated with her. Perhaps the time period it took place in had something to do with it, but I could not believe the relationship she had with Patrick. I found him to be difficult to like and thus it made it hard for me to care what happened to him and his relationship with Margaret. In turn, I was puzzled at how she allowed herself to be treated like she was, and how little self-respect I thought she had. I would never have taken a hike I was so set against with all those good reasons she had, let alone go and live in Kenya with him. Patrick didn't endear himself to me personally so I found it hard to care about the whole underlying theme of a woman trying to make a life for herself and her husband while she made such poor choices. I think Margaret and the other characters were well developed enough to make their parts plausible. However, when I put all the pieces together, I was sad that I didn't like the story as a whole more than I did, as I always adore Shreve's writing. This will have to be put on the bottom of the list of my favorite Anita Shreve books. But when you ask would I recommend it? Yes! I say that as I think your own views and feelings enter into how you perceive these characters and that may be in a much different way than I did. So, yes, based on all the incredible books I have loved of Anita Shreve's, and the narrative expertise she uses in this novel, I say give A CHANGE IN ALTITUDE a chance so that you may form your own opinion. It certainly will make for a great book club choice as it invites good discussion. Don't forget to check out the Reading Group Guide Questions or go here to download them yourself.

READING GROUP GUIDE DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:

Questions for Anita Shreve's A CHANGE OF ALTITUDE

1. How would you interpret the novel’s title? Does the concept of altitude have significance in the story beyond its literal meaning?

2. During the drive to Mt. Kenya, Margaret and Patrick talk about whether photography detaches you from the present or helps you immerse yourself in it more fully (75). In your own life, do you find that taking photographs enriches experiences or prevents you from being fully in the moment?

3. When Diana brings Adhiambo to stay with Patrick and Margaret for the night, they disagree about how best to deal with the situation. Margaret seems more concerned about Adhiambo’s emotional well-being, while Patrick focuses on her physical state. In what way do their differing perspectives reflect other aspects of their characters? Do you think Adhiambo would have been better off if Margaret and Patrick had taken her to the hospital that night?

4. Throughout the novel, Margaret is struck by the way Kenyan characters use the phrase “Just all right” (67, 189, 246, 303). How would you interpret the meaning of this phrase? Why is it so surprising to Margaret?

5. How culpable is Margaret in what happens on the mountain? To what extent does the blame fall on others involved in the climb? Should a person be held responsible for the unintended consequences of her actions (124)?

6. Is Patrick right to confront Margaret about what happened on the mountain? Margaret argues that if he loves her and intends to stay with her, he should not have told her his
opinion, while Patrick believes it is most important to be honest (125). What do you think is most important in a relationship, total honesty or sensitivity to the other’s feelings?

7. Why do you think Margaret feels so strongly about taking the photograph of the leopard? Are there parallels between this action and Diana’s behavior on the glacier? Have you ever put yourself in danger because of a momentary impulse? What do you think motivates actions of this kind?

8. What is your definition of infidelity? Does Margaret’s relationship with Rafiq constitute unfaithfulness to Patrick? Is there such a thing as emotional infidelity or is only physical cheating really cheating?

9. How much of a marriage’s success or failure do you think can be attributed to the love between husband and wife, and how much to external factors, such as jobs, finances, location, and other people? Patrick says, “I think couples need projects to keep them together” (271). Is he correct that a couple must put in effort to make their marriage work?

10. If the accident on the mountain had never occurred, do you think Margaret and Patrick’s relationship would have evolved differently? Would anything more have happened between Arthur and Margaret? Between Rafiq and Margaret?

11. Imagine Margaret and Patrick thirty years after the end of A Change in Altitude, looking back on their life in Africa. How do you think each of them would describe the trajectory of their relationship during this time?

12. Describe your response to the novel’s ending. Did you find it sad? Uplifting? Did you feel that things had worked out for the best?

THE LITTLE GIANT OF ABERDEEN COUNTY: REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY

GIVEAWAY ENDED
THE LITTLE GIANT
OF ABERDEEN COUNTY

BY TIFFANY BAKER

ABOUT THE BOOK:

When Truly Plaice's mother was pregnant, the whole town of Aberdeen lined up to bet on the weight of the baby that could stretch a woman to such epic proportions. Young Truly would pay the price of her enormity. Her father blamed her for her mother's death in childbirth, and was totally ill equipped to raise either this giant child or her older sister and polar opposite, Serena Jane, the epitome of feminine perfection. His subsequent death left Serena Jane to live a life of privilege as the town's prodigal May Queen and Truly to eke out an existence with a rattletrap, outcast family on its rundown farm.

While Truly's remarkable size makes her the subject of constant curiosity and humiliation by her peers, Serena Jane's beauty proves to be both her biggest blessing and her worst curse, for it targets her as the obsession of Bob Bob Morgan, the youngest in a line of Robert Morgans, Aberdeen's family doctors for generations. When Bob Bob does the unthinkable to claim Serena Jane, his actions change the destiny of all Aberdeen County.

In the end, Truly is forced to face her own larger-than-life demons, redefine mercy, and consider the possibility that love cannot be ordered to size.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

MY REVIEW:

Since Wally Lamb gave us Dolores Price in SHE’S COME UNDONE, I have yearned for a character like Truly Plaice and now thanks to Tiffany Baker’s superbly imaginative and captivating writing, we have a ‘little giant’ to root for. This book is sheer magic in so many ways as we follow the painfully poignant journey of our heroine, Truly, in a life filled with contrasts: tragedy and small wonders, sorrow and delight, triumph and tragedy.

Aberdeen County, in rural New York State, is a character in itself as the setting plays into the story in general. This is a small town where everyone is connected in some way either as a family member or through marriage. Of course, in a place such as this, everyone knows each other’s business as well. And Truly Plaice didn’t enter this town quietly but rather as BIG news!

Lily Plaice was expecting her second child in 1953 and was so large during her pregnancy that the townspeople made wagers on how big the baby would be. However, none of the citizens of Aberdeen County were quite prepared for how huge this baby girl really was. Least of which were her parents because Lily Plaice couldn’t handle the size of this baby and she died giving birth to her.

As the narrator of the story, Truly describes how her father was totally unprepared to take care of two young children-herself and older sister, Serena. Due to a pituitary gland deformity, Truly grows larger each day and when she was old enough to realize she was different, there was no sympathetic parent to help her cope with this odd medical condition. Her father is hateful towards her and verbalizes that it was her fault her mother died trying to “push her out”. Truly hopes for an escape when she starts school but instead, she gains her nickname on the first day when the teacher says to her, “You’re a Little Giant”.

Serena and Truly are separated when their father dies and the girls go to live with other families. Serena, pretty and “normal” looking, goes to live with a very rich family while Truly is sent to live on a farm with a very poor family. Amanda Pickerton and her minister husband take in Serena and they adore her and treat her like a doll. Truly was sent to a broken down farm owned by the Dyerson family where she grew to love working outside and with the farm horses. Truly had only two friends, unusual in their own ways, young Amelia Dyerson and a quick minded boy named Marcus. He was a whiz at remembering details. This group made up a pathetic existence for Truly.

Meanwhile, Serena Jane's future seems to be going very well until Bob Bob Morgan comes along. He is the youngest of the Morgan family who have been the town’s doctor for what seems like forever. The Morgan family history goes far back in Aberdeen and the first Morgan supposedly married the town witch, Tabitha Dyerson. Tabitha’s secret book of mysterious forces is said to be hidden and it supposedly contains secrets for healing and other mystifying spells. When Serena abandons her son to escape the cruelty of Bob Bob, she leaves Truly to care for her eight-year-old nephew Bobbie, under the hateful eye of her brother-in-law. Bob Bob criticizes Truly because of her body size and degrades her. However, it is in this part of the setting that Truly discovers her fate. She finds a family quilt filled with old family secrets that lead to GIGANTIC changes in Aberdeen County. From healing potions to life saving emotions, Truly shows she can take the good with the bad and just when you think you have this tale figured out, something else changes to keep you interested until the very end! This little giant of a book by Tiffany Baker is highly recommended and leaves all who have read it looking forward to the next work of Ms. Baker!

BUYING TIME: REVIEW and GIVEAWAY

GIVEAWAY ENDED
BUYING TIME

BY PAMELA SAMUELS YOUNG

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Waverly Sloan is a down-on-his-luck lawyer. But just when he's about to hit rock bottom, he stumbles upon a business with the potential to solve all of his problems.

In Waverly's new line of work, he comes to the aid of people in desperate need of cash. But there's a catch. His clients must be terminally ill and willing to sign over rights to their life insurance policies before they can collect a dime. Waverly then finds investors eager to advance them thousands of dollars—including a hefty broker's fee for himself—in exchange for a significant return on their investment once the clients take their last breath.

The stakes get higher when Waverly brokers the policy of the cancer-stricken wife of Lawrence Erickson, a high-powered lawyer who's bucking to become the next U.S. Attorney General. When Waverly's clients start dying sooner than they should, both Waverly and Erickson—who has some skeletons of his own to hide—are unwittingly drawn into a perilous web of greed, blackmail and murder.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Corporate attorney Pamela Samuels Young has always abided by the philosophy that you create the change you want to see. Fed up with never seeing women or people of color depicted as savvy, hot shot attorneys in the legal thrillers she read, the Compton Native decided to create her own characters. Despite the demands of a busy legal career, Pamela accomplished her ambitious goal by rising at four in the morning to write before work, dedicating her weekends to writing and even spending her vacation time glued to her laptop for ten or more hours a day. The Essence magazine bestselling author now has four fast-paced legal thrillers to show for her efforts.

Pamela’s debut novel, Every Reasonable Doubt (February 2006), won the Black Expressions Book Club’s Fiction Writing Contest, received an honorable mention in the SEAK Legal Fiction Writing Competition and was a finalist for USA Book News’ Best Books of 2006 awards in the mystery, suspense and thriller category. Her second novel, In Firm Pursuit (January 2007) was honored by Romantic Times magazine as a finalist for Best African-American Novel of 2007. Murder on the Down Low (September 2008), Pamela’s third release, was an “Editor’s Pick” by Black Expressions magazine and a finalist for the 2009 African-American Literary Awards in the mystery category. Pamela then published her first stand-alone novel, Buying Time (November 2009). The Black Caucus of the American Library Association honored Buying Time with its 2010 Fiction Award, calling the book "a captivating, suspenseful thriller." Her short story, Setup, was selected for the 2006 Sisters in Crime anthology, LAndmarked for Murder.

MY REVIEW:

BUYING TIME by Pamela Samuels-Young is a riveting action thriller, filled with blackmail, murder, politics, and even romance. It is centered around the main character Waverly Sloan who is a desperate man. A lawyer by profession, he is in trouble and about to be disbarred but panics about what will happen to his marriage if he doesn’t have the resources to keep his high-maintenance wife happy. Deidra is beautiful and enjoys living the life style she has become accustomed to and the main reason she married Waverly. When he meets someone who leads him to believe he can make easy money in the viatical business, Waverly is eager to get on board. At this point, he figures he has nothing to lose but that is his first big mistake.

The viatical industry is a relatively new form of insurance investing that allows for the sale of one’s life insurance in order to make life for the seller more comfortable and stress-free. With certain tax breaks and laws to keep it legal, it basically allows anyone diagnosed with less than two years to live, to sell their life insurance to use the money in any way they so choose.

Waverly becomes a broker who enables terminally ill clients in need of immediate cash to cash out. They sign over the rights to their life insurance policies for a percentage of the face value. Waverly then pays out to them the cash in exchange for being named the sole beneficiary of their life insurance policies upon their death. Waverly gets a large broker's fee on each deal and soon is making more money than he ever made as a lawyer. He tries to convince himself that he is giving hope to the terminally ill in order to soothe his conscience. In reality, Waverly is a very nice guy who just doesn’t want to lose his beautiful wife.

However, Assistant U.S. Attorney Angela Evans heads up a special task force to investigate the company that Waverly works for because his clients begin to die much sooner than expected and it raises some red flags. Evans uses her forces to set-up a plan to catch these cold-blooded businessmen by having an undercover agent pretend to be a terminally ill patient in need of immediate cash.

It was hard to put this book down as Samuels-Young is experienced in the subject as a lawyer herself and so the book certainly rings true as the reader tries to guess who is causing these earlier than expected deaths. She gives the characters depth and the plot the twists that keep the reader hanging on. I found myself trying to figure out who was the real villain. Luckily for me, Samuels-Young cleverly brings the story to conclusion with no loose ends which I REALLY like to see in a book. I have not read any of Pamela’s work before but will surely be on the look out for more now.

LOVE IS THE BEST MEDICINE: REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY

GIVEAWAY ENDED
LOVE IS THE BEST MEDICINE

BY DR. NICK TROUT

ABOUT THE BOOK:

From instant New York Times bestseller, Dr. Nick Trout comes another touching and heartfelt story from the front lines of veterinary medicine—the story of two dogs who forever changed the way he thought about life, death, fate and love.

Helen is an older cocker spaniel found neglected and abandoned in a restaurant parking lot one rainy night. Despite her mangy condition and terrible smell, Ben and Eileen fall in love with the pitiful creature and decide to take her in. But just as Helen is rescued from a sad life on the streets and enveloped in a loving home with all the creature comforts an old dog could ask for, a tumor is discovered and she's given a devastating prognosis. All Ben and Eileen want is for Helen to beat the odds and survive for one more summer so that she can have one chance to swim in the ocean on the family's annual trip to Prince Edward Island. In short, they want a miracle.

Meanwhile, fourteen-month-old miniature pinscher Cleo keeps breaking one leg after another which devastates her poor owner, Sandi. While Cleo is visiting Sandi's daughter, Sonja, in Bermuda, she succumbs to yet another fracture. Distraught that the injury happened on her watch, Sonja makes a plan to fly Cleo to Boston to get the specialist care she needs before Sandi even finds out. Enter Dr. Trout who presides over what should be a fairly routine surgery. What happens next forever links two families, their dogs and a beloved veterinarian and teaches them all a lesson about grace that resonates to this day.

Love is the Best Medicine
immerses you in the true life drama of beloved pets whose lives hang in the balance. Every page underscores the profound bond we have with the animals in our lives and the incredible responsibility Nick carries as their healer. Certainly Dr. Trout has an impressive array of fancy equipment, training and skills at his disposable, but his most important tool (as he persuasively illustrates here) is a fundamental belief in the power of hope, humility, and grace.

Wry, charming, and intensely affecting, Love is the Best Medicine is a one of a kind story only the winsome Dr. Trout could deliver and is destined to become a favorite for animal lovers.

LOVE IS THE BEST MEDICINE CAN BE BOUGHT HERE IF YOU WANT A COPY NOW!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

REVIEW:

Dr. Nick Trout‘s LOVE IS THE BEST MEDICINE is a dog lovers book, and if you aren‘t a dog lover, you will quickly become one thanks to this delightfully tender story the author presents. It is mainly the story of two dogs that are patients of Dr. Trout. The two dogs are Helen, an older cocker spaniel that was abandoned, and Cleo, a young Miniature Pinscher, and both of them have some significant health issues. The story is mostly told from their two viewpoints by alternating the chapters. The dogs become remarkably connected but amazingly never meet.

The story shows how the connection and unselfish love between a human and their pet can result in poignant as well as valuable lessons. Dr. Trout writes from the heart and you can tell that his dedication to all the animals he cares for are important to him. He not only treats the animal, but the owners as well. The relationship he witnessed between Cleo and his owner taught Dr. Trout about that special unselfish connection that a human and their animal can have. This knowledge allows the doctor to go on and treat Helen and thus provide her with more years to support, and be with, those who love her. Although this is really the story of Helen and Cleo, Dr. Trout also writes about other animals that are his patients thus granting the reader even more inside advice and insight into animal care and behaviors.

LOVE IS THE BEST MEDICINE is a story that I think everyone will love and is also a quick read. I finished it on a rather short plane ride recently and while my plane soared to bring me home, this story made my heart do the same!
