LOCK AND KEY: GIVEAWAY

GIVEAWAY ENDED
LOCK AND KEY

BY SARAH DESSEN

ABOUT THE BOOK:

“Ruby, where is your mother?”

Ruby knows that the game is up. For the past few months, she’s been on her own in the yellow house, managing somehow, knowing that her mother will probably never return.

That’s how she comes to live with Cora, the sister she hasn’t seen in ten years, and Cora’s husband Jamie, whose down-to-earth demeanor makes it hard for Ruby to believe he founded the most popular networking Web site around. A luxurious house, fancy private school, a new wardrobe, the promise of college and a future—it’s a dream come true. So why is Ruby such a reluctant Cinderella, wary and defensive? And why is Nate, the genial boy next door with some secrets of his own, unable to accept the help that Ruby is just learning to give?

Best-selling author Sarah Dessen explores the heart of a gutsy, complex girl dealing with unforeseen circumstances and learning to trust again.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Sarah Dessen grew up in Chapel Hill, North Carolina and attended UNC-Chapel Hill, graduating with highest honors in Creative Writing. She is the author of several novels, including Someone Like You, Just Listen and Along for the Ride. A motion picture based on her first two books, entitled How to Deal, was released in 2003. Her tenth novel,What Happened to Goodbye, will be published in May 2011. She lives in North Carolina.

"I’ve been writing, in one way or another, for as long as I can remember. I was always a big reader, mostly because my parents were. I used to get frustrated with my mom because she bought me books for Christmas when what I really wanted were the gifts my friends got, things like sweaters and jewelry. But I did love to read. When I was eight or nine my parents gave me an old manual typewriter and a little desk in the corner of our den, and I’d sit there and type up my stories. I was the kind of kid that people always sighed over and said, "She has such a wild imagination," which usually meant "I wish Sarah would try to stick to the truth." I have a tendency to embellish: I think it’s just a weakness of fiction writers. Once you learn how to make a story better, it’s hard not to do it all the time.

"In high school, I was lucky enough to have a big group of girlfriends that have really inspired a lot of the stories in my books. I’m still close with my friends from that time, so it’s never very hard to put myself back into that place, that voice. Also it doesn’t hurt to still be living in my hometown, where it’s a given that I’ll bump into people I had homeroom with, or guys I had big crushes on, while I’m pumping gas or buying stamps. It makes it hard to leave high school behind entirely, which is a good or bad thing depending on what day you ask me. I attended college at UNC, where I studied creative writing and graduated with a degree in English. (Which means I can quote small parts of many Great Works. Comes in handy occasionally, like at cocktail parties.) I’d been on the five-and-a-half year college plan, and when I graduated my parents were hoping I’d settle down and get a Real Job so they could stop worrying about me. But instead of doing the whole resume/pantyhose thing, I decided to stick to my job waiting tables at the world famous Flying Burrito Restaurant and try to publish a novel. At the time, I had only one very bad book I’d written my senior year of college and the beginnings of another one. Luckily, my family was supportive and I spent a few years living in a ramshackle little house where I wrote during the day and did the restaurant thing at night.

"Three years after graduating, I sold my first book, That Summer, but it wasn’t until a year after that that I got offered a teaching job and left waitressing for good. I still miss it sometimes, though. It was a great job for a writer. Endless conversations to eavesdrop, tons of material, and fast money without ever taking work home. Plus, free Mexican food, the best perk of all. Now, I’ve published four books, all for young adults. I never really intended to be YA writer, but the second book I showed my agent she thought had a strong teenage voice, so she sent it off to an editor at Orchard Books, who bought it. Even though it was in a way accidental, I’ve found that writing for teens suits me. I do short stories, and other novels, that are for an older audience, but again and again I am brought back to the stories of high school. Maybe it’s because so much happened to me then that I’m not finished yet telling everything. My senior quote was from Pink Floyd (okay, I was a bit of a burnout---I spent a lot of time in the parking lot, whatever, let’s move on) and it pretty much summed up my future, although I didn’t know it at the time. It was: "The time is gone, the song is over, thought I’d something more to say." It turns out that I did.

"The books I read when I was teenager, the good ones anyway, have stuck more in my mind than anything since. I still love books, but while I couldn’t tell you complete plots of novels I read even six months ago, I do remember even the smallest descriptive details from Lois Lowry’s A Summer to Die or Judy Blume’s Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. I think it was because back then books were still somewhat new to me, and when I found an author who seemed to say just what I was feeling, it really struck me and resonated. I hope that my books do that for the people who read them: I think it’s the best thing to which any writer can aspire. Now, I teach writing at UNC-Chapel Hill, where I’m lucky enough to see my students find their own voice, the way I did in the same program there not so long ago. Teaching is great for me, because I get to show people how writing can really change the way you see not only yourself but the world. I’ve found in my own life that if my writing isn’t going well, not much else will. It is the one constant, the key to everything else.

"As far as my other life, my non-writing life, I live in the country with my husband, some lizards, and two dogs who are completely spoiled and rule me completely. I like to work in my garden---although I have not yet perfected the art of keeping everything alive----and, in my weaker moments, shop. I have a bit of an addiction to the Gap clearance rack, to be honest. I have this strange need to buy huge quantities of black pants. How many pairs of black pants does one person need? (Obviously for me, the answer is 11 and counting. But I digress.) What else can I tell you? I love Starbucks mochas but they make me way hyper. I subscribe to too many magazines. I make a mean bean salad. I could go on, but the truth is, my books are much more exciting than I am, and that’s a good thing. It’s always more fun to make stuff up anyway."

Sarah Dessen’s first novel, That Summer, an ALA Best Book for Young Adults, was published in 1996. Her other books include Someone Like You and Keeping the Moon, both ALA Quick Picks and School Library Journal Best Books of the Year. Her fourth novel, Dreamland, was published in the fall of 2000. She lives in North Carolina, where she teaches creative writing at UNC-CH, and is currently at work on her fifth novel.

LAST NIGHT AT CHATEAU MARMONT: REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY

GIVEAWAY ENDED
LAST NIGHT AT
CHATEAU MARMONT

BY LAUREN WEISBERGER

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Brooke loved reading the dishy celebrity gossip rag Last Night. That is, until her marriage became a weekly headline.

Brooke was drawn to the soulful, enigmatic Julian Alter the very first time she heard him perform "Hallelujah" at a dark East Village dive bar.

Now five years married, Brooke balances two jobs—as a nutritionist at NYU Hospital and as a consultant to an Upper East Side girls' school, where privilege gone wrong and disordered eating run rampant—in order to help support her husband's dream of making it in the music world.

Things are looking up when after years of playing Manhattan clubs and toiling as an A&R intern, Julian finally gets signed by Sony. Although no one's promising that the album will ever hit the airwaves, Julian is still dedicated to logging in long hours at the recording studio. All that changes after Julian is asked to perform on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno—and is catapulted to stardom, literally overnight. Amazing opportunities begin popping up almost daily—a new designer wardrobe, a tour with Maroon 5, even a Grammy performance.

At first the newfound fame is fun—who wouldn't want to stay at the Chateau Marmont or visit the set of one of television's hottest shows? Yet it seems that Brooke's sweet husband—the man who can't handle hot showers and wears socks to bed—is increasingly absent, even on those rare nights they're home together. When rumors about Brooke and Julian swirl in the tabloid magazines, she begins to question the truth of her marriage and is forced to finally come to terms with what she thinks she wants—and what she actually needs.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Lauren Weisberger is the author of The Devil Wears Prada, which spent more than a year on the New York Times hardcover and paperback bestseller lists. The film version, starring Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway, won a Golden Globe Award and grossed over $300 million worldwide. Her second novel, Everyone Worth Knowing, was also a New York Times bestseller. She lives in New York City with her husband.

MY REVIEW:

LAST NIGHT AT CHATEAU MARMONT, from best selling author of THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA, Lauren Weisberger, is almost a typical “Star is Born” kind of story. ‘Almost’, because as Weisberger’s many fans know, she is never one to settle for the typical story or ending, and that is why we love to read her work. LAST NIGHT AT CHATEAU MARMONT is built around the way that becoming a celebrity can effect someone but also, how it can change the lives of everyone around them.

Brooke is a nutritionist with a successful career, working in New York when she meets Julian Alter, a singer/songwriter trying to make it big in his music career. They almost immediately are attracted to each other and marry soon after. For the first five years, they share their married bliss and become great parents. Brooke works two jobs to support the family so Julian can pursue his musical dream. As if it happened overnight, Julian scores a hit and becomes a rock star instantaneously! As they find themselves in Los Angeles with Julian performing on Jay Leno‘s “The Tonight Show”, their lives are suddenly turned upside down. With this new incredibly glitzy lifestyle, Brooke finds herself quickly left out of the picture and as Julian attracts more aggressive female fans and socializes and works with the hottest young actresses, the paparazzi eat it up. Spending more time away from home than with Brooke and his family, puts an obvious strain on their marriage. The straw for this camel comes, as the headlines read, when Julian is reportedly found “with” another woman bringing Brooke to the point where she must decide if this is the life she really wants or not.

With Weisberger giving such depth to both Brooke and Julian from the start, before all the Hollywood hullabaloo, readers become invested in both their lives, knowing them as "real" people and not stereotypes. Emotionally you can understand the position and feelings of both characters as their lives change over time. Their personal struggles and the precariousness of their marriage all lead to an incredible conclusion. Knowing Brooke so well, leads you to wonder what you would do and how you feel about what really happens. How do you feel about the title LAST NIGHT AT CHATEAU MARMONT and what does it signify? How would you handle things if you were in Julian’s shoes? You will find yourself turning the pages to see if Brooke and Julian do what you think they should do or not. I thoroughly enjoyed Lauren Weisberger’s new book and luxuriated in a well written story with great characters and story lines in what could have been just another Hollywood chick-lit run of the mill story.

LIGHT OF THE MOON: GIVEAWAY

GIVEAWAY ENDED
LIGHT OF THE MOON

BY LUANNE RICE

ABOUT THE BOOK:

New York Times bestselling author Luanne Rice transports readers across the sea in this moving, magical tale of a lonely woman with a promise to keep. Set in a landscape of stunning natural beauty, Light of the Moon is a chronicle of mothers and daughters, friendship and family, and an electrifying love that illuminates a path through heartbreak and loss…and will shine in your memory long after the final page.

Spurred by her mother’s dying wish, Susannah Connolly has traveled from her lifelong home on the Connecticut shoreline to the fabled French Camargue, to see its famous white horses and find a mysterious saint linked to her family’s history. An accomplished anthropologist, Susannah has always been confident of her ability to navigate anywhere on the globe. But in the wake of a failed love affair and grieving the loss of her mother, she is adrift and uncertain, seeking only time alone to dig deeply into the personal archaeology of her own life.

American-born Grey Dempsey had come to the Camargue as a journalist, fell in love with a celebrated Romany rider, and suffered a devastating loss of his own. Now he operates a ranch as he struggles to raise his spirited but troubled young daughter who, after a terrible night years ago, fears the horses she once loved.

Within their bittersweet private orbit, in the midst of the endless silvered marshlands, Susannah Connolly will find a part of herself she hadn’t known she had lost. And here she will find herself embraced by a circle of strong and passionate women bound together by their abiding faith in the legendary slave-saint Susannah seeks and in the miracles she is said to still perform for those who believe. Yet old secrets swirl within the fog-shrouded landscape, betrayals that may be beyond the power of any saint, or supplicant, to repair.

Singular, lyrical, Light of the Moon is Luanne Rice at her most spell-binding, as she explores—as only she can—how sometimes to find your way home you must travel far away.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Luanne Rice is the author of twenty-seven novels, most recently The Geometry of Sisters, Last Kiss, Light of the Moon, What Matters Most, The Edge of Winter, Sandcastles, Summer of Roses, Summer’s Child, Silver Bells, and Beach Girls. SWAN: GIVEAWAY

GIVEAWAY ENDED
SWAN

BY FRANCES MAYES

ABOUT THE BOOK:

By the #1 bestselling author of Under the Tuscan Sun, Bella Tuscany and In Tuscany, Swan is a haunting novel set in the deep South -- a resonant tale of long-buried family secrets and mysteries brought suddenly to light.

In her celebrated memoirs of life in Tuscany, Frances Mayes writes masterfully about people in a powerful and shaping place. In Swan, her first novel, she has created an equally intimate world, rich with striking characters and intriguing twists of fate, that hearkens back to her southern roots. The Masons are a prominent but now fragmented family who have lived for generations in Swan, an edenic, hidebound small town in Georgia. As Swan opens, a bizarre crime pulls Ginger Mason home from her life as an archeologist in Italy: The body of her mother, Catherine, a suicide nineteen years before, has been mysteriously exhumed. Reunited on new terms with her troubled, isolated brother J.J., who has never ventured far from Swan, the Mason children grapple with the profound effects of their mother's life and death on their own lives. When a new explanation for Catherine’s death emerges, and other closely guarded family secrets rise to the surface as well, Ginger and J.J. are confronted with startling truths about their family, a particular ordeal in a family and a town that wants to keep the past buried.

Beautifully evoking the rhythms and idiosyncrasies of the deep South while telling an utterly compelling story of the complexity of family ties, Swan marks the remarkable fiction debut of one of America’s best-loved writers.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

FRANCES MAYES is the author of four books about Tuscany. The now-classic Under the Tuscan Sun–which was a New York Times bestseller for more than two and a half years and became a Touchstone movie starring Diane Lane. It was followed by Bella Tuscany and two illustrated books, In Tuscany and Bringing Tuscany Home. She is also the author of the novel, Swan, six books of poetry, and The Discovery of Poetry. Her books have been translated into more than twenty languages.

I'D KNOW YOU ANYWHERE: REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY

GIVEAWAY ENDED
I'D KNOW YOU ANYWHERE

BY LAURA LIPPMAN

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Eliza Benedict cherishes her peaceful, ordinary suburban life with her successful husband and children, thirteen-year-old Iso and eight-year-old Albie. But her tranquillity is shattered when she receives a letter from the last person she ever expects—or wants—to hear from: Walter Bowman. There was your photo, in a magazine. Of course, you are older now. Still, I'd know you anywhere.

In the summer of 1985, when she was fifteen, Eliza was kidnapped by Walter and held hostage for almost six weeks. He had killed at least one girl and Eliza always suspected he had other victims as well. Now on death row in Virginia for the rape and murder of his final victim, Walter seems to be making a heartfelt act of contrition as his execution nears. Though Eliza wants nothing to do with him, she's never forgotten that Walter was most unpredictable when ignored. Desperate to shelter her children from this undisclosed trauma in her past, she cautiously makes contact with Walter. She's always wondered why Walter let her live, and perhaps now he'll tell her—and share the truth about his other victims.

Yet as Walter presses her for more and deeper contact, it becomes clear that he is after something greater than forgiveness. He wants Eliza to remember what really happened that long-ago summer. He wants her to save his life. And Eliza, who has worked hard for her comfortable, cocooned life, will do anything to protect it—even if it means finally facing the events of that horrifying summer and the terrible truth she's kept buried inside.

An edgy, utterly gripping tale of psychological manipulation that will leave readers racing to the final page, I'd Know You Anywhere is a virtuoso performance from acclaimed, award-winning author Laura Lippman that is sure to be her biggest hit yet.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Since the publication of her first novel, Baltimore Blues, in 1997, Laura Lippman has won virtually every major award given to U.S. crime writings, including the Edgar Award, Anthony Award, Agatha Award, Nero Wolfe Award, Shamus Award, and the Quill Award. What the Dead Know, published in 2007, was a New York Times bestseller and was chosen as one of the best books of the year by critics at the New York Times, Washington Post, Publishers Weekly, People magazine, Village Voice, and the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

Lippman has published twelve books to date. Her thirteenth, Another Thing to Fall, is the tenth installment in the popular Tess Monaghan series, which centers on a young private investigator in Baltimore. Hardly Knew Her, a collection of her short stories and a never-before-published novella, will be published in September 2008.

A former Baltimore Sun reporter, Lippman lives in the city and is working on her next novel.

MY REVIEW:

As a fan of Laura Lippmann since reading LIFE SENTENCES in which she captured my interest with a different style of mystery built mostly around relationships and their curious manner in which they emerge and persevere, I looked forward to her latest book, I‘D KNOW YOU ANYWHERE. What I found was another kind of mystery-a reflective, psychological thriller that was different from what I had expected, but not at all disappointing. The novel's real source of unease comes from the emotional attraction between the two main characters is compelling and frightening all at once.

In I’D KNOW YOU ANYWHERE, Lippmann tells the tale of Eliza Benedict, a suburban wife and mother, who has just come back to the states after 6 years in Great Britain, where her husband, Peter, was working, along with their two children, Iso and Albie. Other than Eliza’s immediate family, she and Peter are the only ones who know the secret that Eliza is really Elizabeth Lerner. When Eliza was 15 years old, she was kidnapped, raped and held hostage for 39 days by a serial killer named Walter Bowman. Bowman is currently on death row for murder of another girl.

Eliza used to have nightmares about the others that Walter kidnapped and so is a bit overly cautious in the friends she and her children make. But for the most part, her life has been a good one with her family. Then out of the blue, Eliza’s world turns upside down as she receives a letter from Walter Bowman that includes a photo of Eliza and Peter at a recent social event.. The letter says, “I’d know you anywhere.” With that, Eliza’s nightmares return. Walter wants to be have contact with Eliza by phone and she is terrified because she remembers that Walter is not happy when he doesn’t get what he wants. Weighing her options, and too scared to think of anything else, Eliza decides that it’s better to do what Walter wants than to get him angry. With this, Eliza spirals into reliving the six weeks they were together and what she saw and how she felt. Back comes the guilt and misgivings. Why didn’t she run? Why was she spared while others were murdered? And when Walter isn’t satisfied with just phone contact and wants to meet with Eliza in person, it is as if Eliza was Elizabeth again experiencing that life as a 15 year old.

Lippmann takes the reader from the present to the past, and through the use of flashbacks, she adds to the excitement of the story. The terror that Eliza goes through is transferred to the reader in subtle ways and you find yourself unable to put the book down, but also afraid to read on….but you do! Will Eliza meet with Bowman face-to-face? Suspense builds to the point that I was so spellbound that I found myself reading on into the night. There may be others who disagree but in my opinion, I’D KNOW YOU ANYWHERE was a perfect way to start to wrap up the summer and head into some fall reading soon. Don’t miss this one!
