FAT WITCH BROWNIES
BY PATRICIA HELDING
ABOUT THE COOKBOOK:
At long last, the owner of New York City's legendary Fat Witch Bakery shares her top-secret recipes for decadent and delicious brownies, blondies, and bars. Patricia Helding's rich, intensely chocolatey Fat Witch brownie is a New York obsession, an internet sensation, and arguably the very best brownie to be found on the planet. Unlike other bakeries that feature a range of desserts, Fat Witch, launched by Helding in 1998, specializes only in brownies--baking and selling over 2,000 each day. In Fat Witch Brownies, Helding showcases for the first time her favorite spins on the classic chocolate brownie with creations like the Banana Bread Brownie and the Breakfast Brownie, and she expands her repertoire even further with recipes for other scrumptious bar-shaped confections.

With over 50 recipes that can be baked in the same 9 x 9-inch pan and require fewer than 10 ingredients, Helding shows that baking from scratch is neither expensive nor time-consuming. All of her recipes include ingredients from local grocery stores, and are ready to serve in one hour or less. Beginning with tips on the proper tools, timing, and techniques, continuing with five chapters of recipes, and finishing with fabulous frostings, Fat Witch Brownies allows readers to explore the versatility and richness of brownies and bars and create the incredible desserts in their very own kitchens that have made Helding's bakery famous.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
PATRICIA HELDING is the owner of Fat Witch Bakery, which she launched in 2001 in a small space in Chelsea Market. She has appeared on The Food Network, Oprah, CBS, CNN, and MTV, and has been featured in several national publications. She lives in New York City.

RECIPES:
Pumpkin Brownies with Pecans

1/2 cup butter, room temperature
1 cup sugar
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground ginger
1/4 tsp ground allspice
1/4 tsp ground cloves
1/4 tsp salt
1 large egg
1/2 cup pumpkin puree
3/4 cup all purpose flour
2/3 cup chopped pecans

Preheat oven to 350F. Lightly grease an 8×8-inch baking dish.

In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in spices, salt, the egg and the pumpkin puree. Sift flour into the bowl and stir it in, mixing until just combined. Add in pecans and stir to evenly distribute the nuts.

Pour batter into prepared baking dish and spread into an even layer.

Bake for 20-25 minutes, until the brownies are just just lightly browned at the edges and the center is set (it may look moist, but will not be sticky when lightly pressed). Cool in the pan before slicing.
Makes 20 bars.

Dark and Milk Chocolate Brownies

1/2 cup butter, softened
2-oz unsweetened chocolate, chopped
1 cup sugar
2 large eggs
1 tsp vanilla extract
2/3 cup flour
3 tbsp cocoa powder
1/4 tsp salt
2/3 cup chopped milk chocolate chunks

Preheat oven to 350F. Line an 8×8-inch square baking pan with aluminum foil and lightly grease.

In a small, heatproof bowl, melt butter and chocolate together. Stir with a fork until very smooth. Set aside to cool for a few minutes.

In a large bowl, whisk together sugar, eggs and vanilla extract. Whisking steadily, pour chocolate mixture into sugar mixture. Stir until smooth. Sift flour, cocoa powder and salt into the bowl and stir until just combined. Stir in milk chocolate chunk, then pour brownie batter into prepared pan.

Bake for 35-40 minutes, until brownies set and a toothpick inserted into the middle of the pan comes out with only a few moist crumbs, not batter, attached.

Cool in the pan completely before slicing and serving.
Makes about 20 brownies
Raspberry Cheesecake Brownies
1/2 cup butter, room temperature
2-oz dark chocolate, chopped
1 cup sugar
2 large eggs
1 tsp vanilla extract
2/3 cup flour
2 tbsp cocoa powder
1/4 tsp salt
 8-oz cream cheese, room temperature
1/3 cup sugar
1 large egg
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1/3 cup raspberry preserves/jam

Preheat oven to 350F. Line an 8×8-inch square baking pan with aluminum foil and lightly grease.

In a small, heatproof bowl, melt butter and chocolate together. Stir with a fork until very smooth. Set aside to cool for a few minutes.
In a large bowl, whisk together sugar, eggs and vanilla extract. Whisking steadily, pour chocolate mixture into sugar mixture. Stir until smooth. Sift flour, cocoa powder and salt into the bowl and stir until just combined.

Pour into prepared pan and prepare cheesecake mixture.

In a medium bowl, beat cream cheese, sugar, egg and vanilla extract until smooth. Drop in dollops onto prepared brownie batter. Drop dollops of raspberry preserves into the cheesecake batter. Gently swirl batters with a butter knife, giving the brownies a swirly look.

Bake for 35-40 minutes, until brownies and cheesecake are set. A knife inserted into the cheesecake mixture should come out clean and the edges will be lightly browned.

Cool in the pan completely before slicing and serving, either at room temperature or chilled.

Brownies can be refrigerated, covered, for several days.
Makes 20 brownies (or 25 small brownies).

CHOCOLATE.COM YUMMY GIVEAWAY!

GIVEAWAY ENDED
FINE CHOCOLATE for FINE OCCASIONS
A Unique Chocolate Marketplace
Every once in a while, dreams do come true! Imagine being asked what kind of chocolate I would like to have? My answer, "There isn't a chocolate I've met that I don't like".

This is the conversation that started off in my being able to sample some of the fine chocolates from CHOCOLATE.COM so that I could talk about this WONDERFUL company that has kindly offered my blog something to give away that some of you just might like!

With all the candy around for Halloween, it got me thinking of really FINE chocolate and how happy was I when I came upon an opportunity to work with the wonderful people at CHOCOLATE.COM!

BUSINESS WEEK called them "An Online Emporium", and that is just the tip of the iceberg, or in this case, the chocolate! CHOCOLATE.COM has every kind of chocolate one can imagine and for every kind of occasion. With Halloween and then Thanksgiving and Christmas close behind, this is a shopper's answer to any and all gifts you might be trying to find. From "Shop by Season" to "Shop by Gift Type", from "Shop by Occasion" to "Shop by Price", you can find anything your chocolate-loving heart desires and best of all, from the finest places across the world.

In another section they break it down so you can "Shop by Chocolate" meaning you can look into:

CHOCOLATE TRUFFLES      DARK CHOCOLATE

            WHITE CHOCOLATE
MILK CHOCOLATE

GOURMET CHOCOLATE

Finding what I was going to taste was SO hard, but I finally decided on some truffles with different flavors and some candy for Halloween.
I received a Four Piece Dark Chocolate Truffle Box from Olde Naples Chocolates in Naples, FL. (to my delight as that means I could take a little trip across my state to their store if I wanted to)!
Described as "Four of our favorite truffle flavors packaged in a great gold box ready for all of your gift giving needs. Each truffle is handcrafted and hand painted. Each assortment contains the following favors, Key Lime, Raspberry, Chocolate and Espresso." And they were divine! The first one I tried is my favorite truffle and that was the Raspberry. The dark chocolate was smooth and rich and when you bit into it the center was a luscious raspberry filling with just the right amount of a sweet tang to make it taste like you were eating fresh raspberries. The others were no different and I made them last (not for long) so the Espresso flavor made it like a four course meal!

My second choice was to try some Halloween chocolates. There is so much to choose from but I decided to settle on Chocolate Dipped Nutter Butters Ghosts and Mummy Designs again from Olde Naples Chocolates in Naples, FL. They were described as "Our ghost and mummys are a Peanut Butter Nutter Butter cookies drenched in our premium chocolate. The ghost is drenched in white chocolate and decorated with sugar eyes and our mummy is dipped in our milk chocolate. 5 nutter butters are included in our clear gift box".

I was a little hesitant as I am not a huge peanut butter candy fan but when they arrived, they were so cute and in such a pretty presentation, I was delighted at first glance. When I tasted first a chocolate "mummy", I was happily surprised because it was crispy but not really in a cookie way but more like a Butter Finger type shredded crisp if you know what I mean. The covering of chocolate was milky smooth and the whole thing together was really delicious. I ate the whole thing after taking the picture below because I knew if I didn't take it at this point, there would be nothing to show. I am saving the other 4 little guys and trying to ration myself to one a day but we shall see how that goes.
I think Chocolate.com is a great discovery (as I hadn't been here before) and I love all the things I tasted and see on their site. Some of the holiday gifts are so lovely, I don't know where to begin. I know you will enjoy checking them all out.  Be sure an look at the section "Shop by Confection" as they have more than just candy. It includes Brownies, Cakes, Cookies, Fudge and more as well as all the chocolates.

PETTY MAGIC: PREVIEW AND GIVEAWAY

GIVEAWAY ENDED
PETTY MAGIC
BY CAMILLE DeANGELIS

ABOUT THE BOOK:
Evelyn Harbinger sees nothing wrong with a one-night stand. At 149 years old, Eve may look like she bakes oatmeal cookies in the afternoon and dozes in her rocking chair in the evening, but once the gray hair and wrinkles are traded for jet-black tresses and porcelain skin, she can still turn heads as the beautiful girl she once was. Can’t fault a girl for having a little fun, can you?

This is all fine and well until Eve meets Justin, who reminds her so much of a former lover that one night is no longer enough. Eve’s coven has always turned a blind eye to her nighttime mischief, but this time they think she’s gone too far—and they certainly don’t hesitate to tell her so. Dodging the warnings of family and friends, Eve must also defend her sister, Helena, when another bedlam accuses Helena of killing her own husband sixty years before.

As the evidence against Helena begins to pile up, Eve distracts herself by spending more and more nights—and days—romancing Justin as her former self.  There are so many peculiar ways in which Justin is like Jonah, her partner behind enemy lines in World War II and the one true love of her life.  Experts in espionage, Jonah and Eve advanced the allied cause at great personal sacrifice.  Now Eve suspects that her Jonah has returned to her, and despite the disapproval of her coven and the knowledge that love with a mortal man can only end in sorrow, she can’t give him up.  But can she prove it’s really him?

In this captivating tale of adventure and timeless romance, novelist Camille DeAngelis blends World War II heroics with witchcraft and wit, conjuring a fabulously rich world where beldames and mortal men dare to fall in love.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Camille DeAngelis was born in November 1980 in New Jersey, where she still lives (most of the time). She received a B.A. in Art History from New York University in 2002. During her time at NYU she wrote and worked for the Washington Square News and spent an idyllic semester at La Pietra in Florence. After graduating, she worked as an editorial assistant in a nonfiction imprint at HarperCollins.

Camille’s first travel-writing gig was co-writing Hanging Out in Ireland, a shoestring guide published in 2001. Between her first research trip in the spring of 2000 for Hanging Out and her most recent experience writing for Moon Handbooks in 2006, she’s been back to Ireland many times. She lived in Galway in 2004-2005 while in the M.A. in Writing program at the National University of Ireland, Galway, and wrote Mary Modern while there. Camille's new novel, Petty Magic, was also penned in Galway.

READ AN EXCERPT:

PRAISE FOR PETTY MAGIC:
“A moving and witty love story…charming prose.”
Publishers Weekly

“An amusing romp!”—Booklist

Part Sara Gruen's Water for Elephants, part Bedknobs and Broomsticks, DeAngelis's second novel uses witchcraft to illuminate a woman whose wrinkles belie the passionate, adventurous girl she still is on the inside. Recommended for fans of magical realism—emphasis on the magic.
Library Journal

"A charming curiosity shop of a novel, packed to bursting with secret histories and glittering marvels. With Petty Magic, Camille DeAngelis has given us a glimpse into a strange and enchanting world. It's dangerous good fun, and well worth getting lost in."
—Jedediah Berry, author of The Manual of Detection
"Love, magic, history, witches: it's all here, between the covers of this lovely book. Updike might have written it, if he'd had a better sense of humor."
—Daniel Wallace, author of Big Fish

MY NEST ISN'T EMPTY,
IT JUST HAS MORE
CLOSET SPACE
AUDIO BOOK
BY LISA SCOTTOLINE
READ BY LISA & FRANCESCA SCOTTOLINE
ABOUT THE AUDIO BOOK:
Critics and readers loved Lisa Scottoline’s first collection of true-life stories, which only encouraged her—now she’s back with these all-new, exciting adventures. She’s farther down the road now, and the scenery has changed—ex-husbands Thing One and Thing Two are in her rear-view mirror, daughter Francesca has moved into an apartment, and Lisa’s finding the silver lining in her empty nest, which has lots more room for her shoes. And some things have stayed the same—Mother Mary is still the feistiest octogenarian on the planet, who won’t part with her recipe for tomato sauce or her thirty-year old bra.
In this book Lisa and Francesca spill all their family secrets—which sound a lot like yours, if you understand that three generations of women is the formula for spontaneous combustion.

Inspired by her weekly column entitled, “Chick Wit” for The Philadelphia Inquirer, this is a book you’ll have to put down—just to stop laughing.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
LISA SCOTTOLINE is the New York Times bestselling and Edgar-award winning author of sixteen novels. She has 25 million copies of her books in print in the United States, and she has been published in twentyfive countries. She also teaches a course called Justice & Fiction at the University of Pennsylvania Law School, her alma mater. She lives in Philadelphia with an array of disobedient pets. FRANCESCA SCOTTOLINE SERRITELLA graduated cum laude from Harvard University, where she won the Thomas Temple Hoopes Prize, the Baron Russell Briggs Fiction Prize, and the Charles Edmond Horman Prize for her creative writing. She is working on a novel, and she lives in New York with only one dog, so far.

MY REVIEW:
Best-selling mystery author Lisa Scottoline’s newest book, MY NEST ISN’T EMPTY, IT JUST HAS MORE CLOSET SPACE for me was a real departure from her books I was used to reading like LADY KILLER or DIRTY BLONDE for instance. I had no idea until I received this audio book from the good folks at Macmillan Audio Books that Lisa also writes a weekly column in The Philadelphia Inquirer called “Chick Wit“. I checked on some of her columns and they are charming and so is this audio book. This is Lisa’s second book of this kind with her first being WHY MY THIRD HUSBAND WILL BE A DOG, which I will now have to hunt up a copy of because I think this audio book was so entertaining. I could relate to so many of her topics. She has an amazing sense of humor and I think if you look at her video clips, or listen to an audio excerpt, you will know that right away.

MY NEST ISN’T EMPTY, IT JUST HAS MORE CLOSET SPACE is written and read by Lisa as well as her co-author and daughter, Francesca Scottoline. The interaction between mother and daughter is so typical and they both have their own style which results in views from both ends of the spectrum as they share family secrets. Lisa talks about everything and nothing is off-limits as far as her personal life…or Francesca’s! With Francesca having moved into her own place, Lisa voices many of the same feelings those of us with that “empty nest” can relate to, or really mothers in general. Francesca talks about riding the subway at night when going to see a friend and how she knew better than to mention it to Mom Lisa, as she would have just freaked out. Lisa’s reaction, similar to mine, is to worry about her “little girl” (age 24, I believe) on the subway alone at night being out among the degenerates and dangers plus all that entails. I know I thought of all the times I still worry about my thirty-three-year-old as if he were five!

One of my favorite parts was when Lisa talked about GRUDGES (guilty!). She didn’t sugar coat it but rather put it out there that she has grudges and believes when you have one, it should be held on to and used in every way possible. She tells about a long time grudge against a publisher who rejected her writing early on in her career and basically told her she shouldn’t be a writer. Well, Lisa goes on about how every time she sees this man, her blood boils and she always wants to throw it in his face…like “it” maybe being one of her many bestsellers that weighs a good bit! She finally takes the step and goes over to talk to him at a function and details the walk across the room in a sympathetic and remorseful sounding voice. She describes the wrinkles and what must be cataract scarred eyes, shaking hands and feeling the arthritic knuckles sticking out. Her compassionate tone leads you to believe, she is going to soften, but oh, no, don’t be fooled! She admits to his having aged but makes no bones about not still hating him and that NOT being any excuse to drop the grudge!

When Lisa talks about aging and her hair turning gray and then getting a chin hair followed by wolf-like sideburns as she enters her fifties, I almost wrecked the car as it was so funny. Her mention of strangling someone with her Spanx was also something I could easily relate to. Honestly, what made this 4 CD Audio Book a nice break especially to laugh at in my car, was hearing Lisa read it. I think had I read the book it would have entertained me, but not been quite as funny as hearing Lisa and Francesca reading it. I also love my audio books for relaxing but think this one is better for the car or while I was doing a "much loved" task like mending clothes!!! ARGH!

To finish and give you a taste this delectable audio book is all about, and how Lisa Scottoline has so cleverly written it, you will find, in what follows, the opening to the book. Those of us who were Nancy Drew fans as kids and now are empty nesters, or nearing it especially, will be able to relate. Enjoy!

I grew up with a girl crush on Nancy Drew, and it came back to me recently, when I was organizing my books at home. I found a few of the Nancy Drew books I had as a child, among them the blue-thatched copy of The Mystery at the Ski Jump. It’s even older than I am, copyrighted in 1952.

My copyright is 1955.

As a girl, I not only read the Nancy Drew books, I memorized them. I identified with her, although we had nothing in common. She was rich, I wasn’t. She was slim, I wasn’t. She had a distant father and no mother. I was close to my father, and I had Mother Mary.

Who’s enough mother for both of us.

Nevertheless I loved her and I still do, even in my fifties. Could there be two times in a woman’s life during which she feels like Nancy Drew—pre-puberty and post-menopause?

Possible.

But why, for me?

For starters, Nancy’s blond, and I’m blond in my mind.

She has a dog, and I have five dogs.

She drives a convertible roadster, and I drive an SUV.

Well, they’re both cars.

Plus we both have a boyfriend. Hers is Ned Nickerson, and mine is George Clooney

ABOUT THE AUDIO BOOK:

see the original post HERE

FREEDOM NEWS:
Oprah is talking about it. So is TIME magazine and The New York Times. And you know everyone at the Thanksgiving table will be talking about it. Make sure you are in on the discussion of Jonathan Franzen's new novel by the time the cranberry sauce is passed around by posting about our Freedom Listening Club: Macmillan Audio’s month-long online audio book discussion, launching November 1 on their Facebook page.

With about 600 pages in the print edition, the Freedom audio book allows listeners to absorb Franzen’s literary feat wherever and whenever they want: in the car, at the gym, around the house, or while at work. Read by esteemed narrator David LeDoux, the audio edition of Freedom has received outstanding praise, mirroring the acclaim for the hardcover. Naming Freedom an “Earphones Award Winner,” AudioFile magazine describes the audio book as “masterful” and one that “demonstrates the power of both the written and spoken word.” BookPage recently named Freedom their “Audio of the Month” for November, and Eric Alterman of The Nation called it “perhaps the best read audio book I've ever heard.”

Macmillan Audio Books already has general information, an audio excerpt, and main talking points up on the discussion tab of their Facebook page, but starting November 1 they will get the dialog rolling and delve into the compelling plot and cast of characters, David LeDoux’s narration, and the listening experience as a whole. Throughout the month of November, they’ll post new thoughts and questions while answering the thoughts and questions of those participating. Producer Paul Ruben will also stop by to answer listeners’ questions, as well as other surprise guests! As an added bonus at the end of the Listening Club, they will pick 5 participants at random to win any Macmillan Audio audio book of their choice.

Be sure and watch for this FREEDOM audio book symbol in my right column to click on all through November to get to the club for the activities and your chance to win! Good Luck!
