TOYS
BY JAMES PATTERSON
& NEIL McMAHON

ABOUT THE BOOK:
James Bond and Jason Bourne have just been topped! A battle for the world is set into unstoppable motion and Hays Baker is the only one who can save it.

Hays Baker and his wife Lizbeth possess super-human strength, extraordinary intelligence, stunning looks, a sex life to die for, and two beautiful children. Of course they do--they're Elites, endowed at birth with the very best that the world can offer. The only problem in their perfect world: humans and their toys!
The one with the most toys--dies

The top operative for the Agency of Change, Hays has just won the fiercest battle of his career. He has been praised by the President, and is a national hero. But before he can savor his triumph, he receives an unbelievable shock that overturns everything he thought was true. Suddenly Hays is on the other side of the gun, forced to leave his perfect family and fight for his life.

Now a hunted fugitive, Hays is thrown into a life he never dreamed possible--fighting to save humans everywhere from extinction. He enlists all of his training to uncover the truth that will save millions of lives--maybe even his own. James Patterson's Toys is a thriller on a hyper plane--with a hero who rivals both James Bond and Jason Bourne.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS:
James Patterson has had more New York Times bestsellers than any other writer, ever, according to Guinness World Records. Since his first novel won the Edgar Award in 1976, James Patterson's books have sold more than 170 million copies. He is the author of the Alex Cross novels, the most popular detective series of the past twenty-five years, including Kiss the Girls and Along Came a Spider. Mr. Patterson also writes the bestselling Women's Murder Club novels, set in San Francisco, and the top-selling New York detective series of all time, featuring Detective Michael Bennett. He writes full-time and lives in Florida with his family.

Neil McMahon is the author of several thrillers, including Dead Silver. He lives in Montana with his wife.

MY THOUGHTS/REVIEW:
TOYS by James Patterson and Neil McMahon is set in the future. In 2061, humans are known as “skunks” while a group called “Elites” are the ones in charge. Readers meet Hays Baker who is an Elite who seemingly has it all. He has a gorgeous wife and two precious children. Hays himself is an excellent specimen and has received all an Elite should hope for and more in the way of good looks and intelligence.  All in Hays' world is going well until one fateful day when he is summoned to a Toyz store where he finds a brutal attack has been performed and there are many dead.

Owen McGill, Hays partner, thinks the skunks did it and so Hays goes looking for the suspect skunks. However, while on this mission he falls and is badly hurt and winds up in the hospital. Now that he is no longer a “perfect specimen” of an Elite, he finds that now the Elites want him for other reasons…not pleasant ones but more like to torture him!

Hays tries to get away and goes to his parents’ house to find solace but instead finds the truth! It seems he was not who he thought he was all his life. He learns of his background as well as how the Elites have treated humans over the years. Hays’s life suddenly looks totally different and his world is upside down. As Hays Baker tries to assimilate this information, he finds out that the Elites are planning to do away with all humans.

How Hays and the Elites handle all this, makes up the rest of a very unusual read for me from what I am used to from James Patterson. The story moves quickly but personally, I am a “detective/Alex Cross/modern day” Patterson fan so this was not one of my favorites. It was, however, typically a quick read and also held my attention for the most part. I think fans of some of Patterson’s more sci-fi themed books will adore this one. No matter what the genre, James Patterson knows how to write and sell books without a doubt…and more power to him!

HOKUS POKUS
BY FERN MICHAELS

ABOUT THE BOOK:
There is no match for the Sisterhood - the seven friends who have taken vigilante justice to a new level - not even the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Although the women foiled former FBI director Mitch Riley's plot to frame their friends Judge Nellie Easter and lawyer Lizzie Fox, now they must remain in exile or risk capture. They can't complain about their opulent digs on a remote, luxurious mountaintop, but the ladies desperately miss home.

Their wish to return might come true sooner than they expect when they receive a panicked call from Supreme Court Chief Justice Pearl Barnes, who faces blackmail for her own illegal brand of justice. Now the women must not only sneak back into the United States, but also remain undetected as they investigate. But how do you make seven women disappear? With a nosy reporter on the brink of exposing them, the clock is ticking as the Sisterhood tries to create a little magic - and save the day...

BENJAMIN PRATT AND
THE KEEPERS OF THE SCHOOL:
WE THE CHILDREN
BY ANDREW CLEMENTS

ABOUT THE BOOK:
Benjamin Pratt's school is about to become the site of a new amusement park. It sounds like a dream come true! But lately, Ben has been wonder if he's going to like an amusement park in the middle of his town—with all the buses and traffic and eight dollar slices of pizza. It's going to change everything. And, Ben is not so big on all the new changes in his life, like how his dad has moved out and started living in the marina on what used to be the "family" sailboat. Maybe it would be nice if the school just stayed as it is. He likes the school. Loves it, actually. It's over 200 years old and sits right on the harbor. The playground has ocean breezes and the classrooms have million dollar views…MILLION DOLLAR views. And after a chance—and final—run-in with the school janitor, Ben starts to discover that these MILLION DOLLAR views have a lot to do with the deal to sell the school property. But, as much as the town wants to believe it, the school does not belong to the local government. It belongs to the CHILDREN and these children have the right to defend it! Don't think Ben, his friend Jill (and the tag-along Robert) can ruin a multimillion dollar real estate deal? Then you don't know the history and the power of the Keepers of the School. A suspenseful six book series, book one, We the Children, starts the battle on land and on sea. It's a race to keep the school from turning into a ticket booth and these kids are about to discover just how threatening a little knowledge can be.

Andrew Clements is the author of the enormously popular FRINDLE. Over ten million of his books have sold to date and he has been nominated for a multitude of state awards and has won two Christopher Awards and an Edgar Award. His popular works include EXTRA CREDIT, LOST AND FOUND, NO TALKING, ROOM ONE, LUNCH MONEY, A WEEK IN THE WOODS, THE JACKET, THE SCHOOL STORY, THE JANITOR'S BOY, THE LANDRY NEWS, THE REPORT CARD AND THE LAST HOLIDAY CONCERT. Mr. Clements taught in the public schools near Chicago for seven years before moving East to begin a career in publishing and writing. He lives with his wife in central Massachusetts and has four grown children. His website is andrewclements.com.

MY THOUGHTS/REVIEW:
Andrew Clements new series about Benjamin Pratt is an exciting and fun story for children to read. As a former reading teacher, it is the kind of book that I would recommend to my 4th grade students because it teaches them something while they enjoy a good story. Clements is best known for FRINDLE which is one of my favorite books and one I always would try and read aloud to my students. It even became a story excerpt in one of our Reading textbooks. This is one to enjoy for sure!

  THE UNUSUAL MIND OF
VINCENT SHADOW
BY TIM KEHOE
ABOUT THE BOOK:
Vincent Shadow isn't particularly good at sports and is constantly being picked on by his classmates at Central Middle School. But it is Vincent's unusually creative mind that truly separates him from other kids his age.

Vincent's top secret attic lab is crammed with toy prototypes --from Liquid Superballs to Bullz-I Basketballs and Sonic Snorkelz--and he has a sketch book filled with drawings of toys he still wants to build. So when a chance encounter with an eccentric toy inventor offers him the opportunity to go from unknown weird kid to toy inventor extraordinaire, Vincent realizes that playtime is over: it's time to get serious about toys.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Tim Kehoe is the inventor of numerous toy products, including the world's first colored bubbles, called Zubbles, and he was recently named one of America's 100 Best by Reader's Digest.  In 2005, Zubbles was awarded Popular Science's Grand Prize for Innovation. This is Tim's debut children's book. He lives with his wife and children in Minnesota. Visit him online at www.timkehoe.com.

Zubbles Logo
From author-inventor Tim Kehoe: Introducing Zubbles, the world’s only real colored bubbles. Zubbles are the result of more than fifteen years of experiments and discoveries. Popular Science awarded Zubbles the Grand Prize for Innovation in 2005, and now you can experience the magic of blowing colored bubbles on your iPhone…and in person! Visit Zubbles.com for more information.
MY THOUGHTS/REVIEW:
With a familiar Cinderella-like theme (mean stepmother, etc.) Tim Kehoe gives children 11-year-old Vincent who just might be a little like Tim himself. Tim, who is an accomplished toy inventor, created Vincent who has a book full of his invention ideas. He wins a contest (another favorite dream of kids) to work with a famous toy maker. Howard G. Whiz, the toymaker, encourages Vincent unlike stepmother Vibs and his sisters at home. With the inclusion of being unaccepted at school and at home, this will appeal to children in late elementary grades, and once more address bullying and acceptance of others. Of course, children will read this book because it is great fun and is well written. Recommended for 4th and 5th grade reading levels.

SPACEHEADZ
BY JON SCIESZKA
WITH FRANCISCO SEDITA
ABOUT THE BOOK:
The perfect combination of the age old experience of holding and pouring over a physical book with newest media technology that kids love!

Michael K. just started fifth grade at a new school. As if that wasn't hard enough, the kids he seems to have made friends with apparently aren't kids at all. They are aliens. Real aliens who have invaded our planet in the form of school children and a hamster. They have a mission to complete: to convince 3,140,001 kids to BE SPHDZ. But with a hamster as their leader, "kids" who talk like walking advertisements, and Michael K as their first convert, will the SPHDZ be able to keep their cover and pull off their assignment?

ABOUT THE AUTHOR(S):
Jon Scieszka is the creator of Trucktown and the author of The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs!, the Time Warp Trio series, Caldecott Honor Book The Stinky Cheese Man, and many other books that inspire kids to want to read. He has worked as an elementary school teacher and is the founder of a literacy initiative for boys (www.guysread.com).

Francesco Sedita studied writing at the Gallatin School of New York University. While at Gallatin, he was a Writing Fellow for Saturday Night Live and upon graduation he wrote and directed a show that ran Off-Off-Broadway for 5 years. Miss Popularity is his first book, published by Scholastic in 2007. Francesco is the Creative Director at Scholastic. He lives in Brooklyn, NY.

MY THOUGHTS/REVIEW:
Michael K. goes through something very familiar to kids at school...experiencing the first day and then deciding who to align yourself with. Michael's decision may prove to be his best, or at least his most unusual when he is advised by Bob and Jennifer that they are from another planet and known as "spaceheadz". Michael finds himself in several laugh out loud situations as a result his choices and again something kids can relate to AND learn from. There is no way that the author of most every one's favorite THE STINKY CHEESE MAN wouldn't love this delightfully entertaining book. Although early middle school students enjoy the comedy and easy read, upper elementary students will probably be the most targeted group to read this on their own, and I hope many do!

SO MUCH PRETTY: REVIEW AND BONUS ENTRIES!

 GIVEAWAY ENDED
SO MUCH PRETTY
BY CARA HOFFMAN

REMINDER ABOUT THE BOOK:
Stacy Flynn is a reporter looking for her big break. She moved from Cleveland to Haeden, a rural, upstate New York that counts a dairy farm as its main employer and is home to families who’ve set down roots and never left—people who don’t take kindly to outsiders.  Five months after a local girl disappears, her body is found in a ditch just off one of Haeden’s main roads. Suddenly, Flynn has a big story, but no one wants to talk to her. No one seems to think the killer could still be among them. Alice Piper is a precocious, confident 15-year-old with a genius IQ and strong ideals.

When Alice reads Flynn’s passionate article in the paper about violence against women—about the staggering number of women who are killed each day by people they know—she begins to connect the dots of Wendy’s disappearance and death, leading her to make a choice: join the rest in turning a blind eye, or risk getting involved. As Flynn and Alice separately observe the locals’ failure to acknowledge a murderer in their midst, Alice’s fate is forever entwined with the victim’s when a second crime rocks the town to its core.

If you missed my first post about this amazing book, please go HERE to enter for the first part of the entries and entries on this post will be BONUS entries giving you more chances to win!

MY REVIEW:
Cara Hoffman’s debut novel, SO MUCH PRETTY, is a captivating thriller that is sure to win her many fans. This story will grab your attention as it is disturbing and also might make you angry when the town’s residents ignore a recent murder rather than admit that anything could be wrong in their perfect and peaceful village. The little town is known as Haeden, New York, where the story starts out with young Wendy White happily out on her own for the first time with a job and a boyfriend. Life is good. Good until one day Wendy comes up missing and although her parents are frantic and police investigate, Wendy is nowhere to be found.

Meanwhile, Stacy Flynn, a reporter from Cleveland, has come to Haeden to write an investigative piece on the environmental impact of the town’s number one employer, a dairy. The runoff from its farm is quite possibly detrimental, and poisoning animals as well as people who live near the outskirts of Haeden. With the dairy having such a strong presence in the town, this is the last thing that the residents want someone causing trouble about. While Stacy is there, five months after the disappearance, Wendy White’s body is found in a ditch near Haeden. Realizing this may be a bigger story, Stacy gets right on it but gets no cooperation from anybody in town. She can’t understand why they would ignore something like this. Stacy begins to have suspicions about the whole town and everyone in it. They all are just sure it was the deed of a long gone stranger and that’s that!

Meanwhile, the second most important character is that of fifteen-year-old Alice Piper who has moved with her parents, who are both doctors, from New York to what they thought would be a better place to raise their family. Alice is literally a genius and some people think she is too “big city” and has an attitude. Alice is also an accomplished swimmer and remembers Wendy White from the swim team at school. She also doesn’t think things add up in Wendy’s murder.  After reading some of Stacy’s press about how violence against women is often treated differently, Alice has to agree and when another terrible crime happens, she and Stacy are somewhat thrown together. The rest of the town, of course, again assumes it was a stranger and not one of their own.

Will Stacy and Alice be proved right or will they get in so deep that they also are in danger? The narrative takes off on a cunningly dangerous and emotional direction with Cara Hoffman’s very well-controlled writing which includes her narrative using both first and third person point of view. This allows readers to see into all the well drawn characters.  While she keeps readers turning the pages with this fast paced thriller, she also makes a statement on how some political machines can run a town of any size and how environmental issues are always pushing people’s buttons. I think Hoffman did a wonderful job and I eagerly will look forward to her next novel!
