DEATH OF A CHIMNEY SWEEP: REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY

 GIVEAWAY ENDED
DEATH OF A CHIMNEY SWEEP
BY M. C. BEATON

ABOUT THE BOOK:
In the south of Scotland, residents get their chimneys vacuum-cleaned. But in the isolated villages in the very north of Scotland, the villagers rely on the services of the itinerant sweep, Pete Ray, and his old-fashioned brushes. Pete is always able to find work in the Scottish highlands, until one day when Police Constable Hamish Macbeth notices blood dripping onto the floor of a villager's fireplace, and a dead body stuffed inside the chimney. The entire town of Lochdubh is certain Pete is the culprit, but Hamish doesn't believe that the affable chimney sweep is capable of committing murder.

About Author

M.C. Beaton lives in the Cotswolds with her husband. In addition to the Hamish Macbeth series, she writes the Agatha Raisin mystery series.

Audio and Video

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
M.C. Beaton is the author of 12 mysteries first published by Ivy, and now Bantam Books, featuring Hamish Macbeth (the local bobby in the sleepy Scottish Highland village of Lochdubh) and his eccentric neighbors. Macbeth is a quiet, artfully lazy man who often wonders why no one else "understands the happiness and contentment of the truly unambitious man." Hamish's peaceful life is disrupted throughout the series, however, as he is faced with murders in his orderly town. The victim is almost always some meddlesome outsider who seems to have invited his or her own demise. Macbeth solves the murders in his easygoing Highland style.

Beaton's Hamish Macbeth is now featured in a television series in England. It has been written and produced by the same people who produced Colin Dexter's Inspector Morse. The title character is played by Robert Carlyle, who has played in the the feature films Trainspotting, Priest and Riff Raff.

Beaton also writes a mystery series featuring retired London public-relations executive Agatha Raisin. In the first book, AGATHA RAISIN AND THE QUICHE OF DEATH, Agatha has sold her public-relations firm and retired to the picturesque Cotswold village of Carsely. Blunt and pushy, Agatha makes a mess out of her first aggressive attempts to fit into village life. Determined to gain acceptance among the villagers, the undomestic Agatha cheats in the local bake-off by entering a store-bought quiche. Her secret is revealed when the judge dies -- poisoned by her quiche. Agatha hopes to save face by finding his murderer -- and thus becomes the local village sleuth. Her adventures continue in AGATHA RAISIN AND THE VICIOUS VET.

M.C. Beaton also writes under the name of the regency romance author, Marion Chesney. She lives in a Cotswold village
with her husband.

MY REVIEW:
M. C. Beaton brings her multitude of fans to Loch Dubh, back to the Highlands of Scotland in her latest Hamish Macbeth Mystery, DEATH OF A CHIMNEY SWEEP.  Ah, but for those who don’t know Beaton’s clever, cozy type mysteries, don’t start singing “Chim chim-in-ey” and looking for Mary Poppins just yet. DEATH OF A CHIMNEY SWEEP is about a closed case, according to local authorities, that Police Constable Hamish Macbeth decides needs to be reopened.

Hamish Macbeth thinks that solving the murder of con artist/retired Army Captain, Henry Davenport, was just too easily solved. Henry Davenport had too many enemies and Macbeth thinks the wrong suspect was given credit for the horrible murder.

Davenport was found stuffed in his chimney, and chimney sweep Pete Ray was the last person seen working around the house, according to authorities so naturally, Ray, the local chimney sweep, is accused. Case closed…until as Macbeth points out, Ray was found dead soon after of a supposed motorbike accident. Followed by more murders, and a close call even for Hamish making a serial killer on his radar for sure, the typical Beaton mystery winds round for the reader. Leaving clues to make you think one thing and then another, DEATH OF A CHIMNEY SWEEP keeps your attention as one tries to figure out the “who done it”. Showing just how greed can make some people do anything, this is Beaton at her best.

HOT, FLAT, AND CROWDED: A GIVEAWAY

GIVEAWAY ENDED
HOT, FLAT, AND CROWDED
Why We Need a Green Revolution--
and How It Can Renew America
BY THOMAS L. FRIEDMAN

ABOUT THE BOOK:
Thomas L. Friedman’s phenomenal number-one bestsellerThe World Is Flat has helped millions of readers to see the world in a new way. In his brilliant, essential new book, Friedman takes a fresh and provocative look at two of the biggest challenges we face today: America’s surprising loss of focus and national purpose since 9/11; and the global environmental crisis, which is affecting everything from food to fuel to forests. In this groundbreaking account of where we stand now, he shows us how the solutions to these two big problems are linked--how we can restore the world and revive America at the same time.

Friedman explains how global warming, rapidly growing populations, and the astonishing expansion of the world’s middle class through globalization have produced a planet that is “hot, flat, and crowded.” Already the earth is being affected in ways that threaten to make it dangerously unstable. In just a few years, it will be too late to fix things--unless the United States steps up now and takes the lead in a worldwide effort to replace our wasteful, inefficient energy practices with a strategy for clean energy, energy efficiency, and conservation that Friedman calls Code Green.

This is a great challenge, Friedman explains, but also a great opportunity, and one that America cannot afford to miss. Not only is American leadership the key to the healing of the earth; it is also our best strategy for the renewal of America.

In vivid, entertaining chapters, Friedman makes it clear that the green revolution we need is like no revolution the world has seen. It will be the biggest innovation project in American history; it will be hard, not easy; and it will change everything from what you put into your car to what you see on your electric bill. But the payoff for America will be more than just cleaner air. It will inspire Americans to something we haven’t seen in a long time--nation-building in America--by summoning the intelligence, creativity, boldness, and concern for the common good that are our nation’s greatest natural resources.

Hot, Flat, and Crowded is classic Thomas L. Friedman: fearless, incisive, forward-looking, and rich in surprising common sense about the challenge--and the promise--of the future.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Thomas L. Friedman, a world-renowned author and journalist, joined The New York Times in 1981 as a financial reporter specializing in OPEC- and oil-related news and later served as the chief diplomatic, chief White House, and international economics correspondents. A three-time Pulitzer Prize winner, he has traveled hundreds of thousands of miles reporting the Middle East conflict, the end of the cold war, U.S. domestic politics and foreign policy, international economics, and the worldwide impact of the terrorist threat. His foreign affairs column, which appears twice a week in theTimes, is syndicated to seven hundred other newspapers worldwide.

Friedman is the author of From Beirut to Jerusalem (FSG, 1989), which won both the National Book Award and the Overseas Press Club Award in 1989 and was on the New York Times bestseller list for nearly twelve months. From Beirut to Jerusalem has been published in more than twenty-seven languages, including Chinese and Japanese, and is now used as a basic textbook on the Middle East in many high schools and universities. Friedman also wrote The Lexus and the Olive Tree (FSG, 1999), one of the best selling business books in 1999, and the winner of the 2000 Overseas Press Club Award for best nonfiction book on foreign policy. It is now available in twenty languages. His last book, Longitudes and Attitudes: Exploring the World After September 11, issued by FSG in 2002, consists of columns Friedman published about September 11 as well as a diary of his private experiences and reflections during his reporting on the post-September world as he traveled from Afghanistan to Israel to Europe to Indonesia to Saudi Arabia. In 2005, The World Is Flat was given the first Financial Times and Goldman Sachs Business Book of the Year Award, and Friedman was named one of America's Best Leaders by U.S. News & World Report.

Friedman graduated summa cum laude from Brandeis University with a degree in Mediterranean studies and received a master's degree in modern Middle East studies from Oxford. He has served as a visiting professor at Harvard University and has been awarded honorary degrees from several U.S. universities. He lives in Bethesda, Maryland, with his wife, Ann, and their two daughters.

AN EXCERPT:

ONE

Where Birds Don’t Fly

"German engineering, Swiss innovation, American nothing."

Advertising slogan used on a billboard in South Africa by Daimler to promote its Smart "forfour" compact car.

In June 2004, I was visiting London with my daughter Orly, and one evening we went to see the play Billy Elliot at a theater near Victoria Station. During intermission, I was standing up, stretching my legs in the aisle next to my seat, when a stranger approached and asked me, “Are you Mr. Friedman?” When I nodded yes, he introduced himself: “My name is Emad Tinawi. I am a Syrian-American working for Booz Allen," the consulting firm. Tinawi said that while he disagreed with some of the columns I had written, particularly on the Middle East, there was one column he especially liked and still kept.

“Which one?” I asked with great curiosity.

“The one called ‘Where Birds Don’t Fly,’" he said. For a moment, I was stumped. I remembered writing that headline, but I couldn’t remember the column or the dateline.TO READ THE REST OF THIS EXCERPT, PLEASE VISIT FARRAR, STRAUS, AND GIROUX AT MACMILLAN PUBLISHING HERE.

ARE YOU LISTENING? FRIDAYS! THIN, RICH, PRETTY AUDIO BOOK REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY

WELCOME TO
BOOKIN' WITH BINGO'S
"ARE YOU LISTENING? DAY"
I AM EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE THIS FRIDAY'S
"ARE YOU LISTENING? DAY" AUDIO BOOK CHOICE IS.....

GIVEAWAY ENDED

THIN, RICH, PRETTY
BY BETH HARBISON
READ BY ORLAGH CASSIDY
ABOUT THE AUDIO BOOK:
From theNew York Times bestselling author of Hope In a Jar, Secrets of a Shoe Addict, and Shoe Addicts Anonymous, comes a novel about old rivalries, deep secrets, and the three things all women wish they were.

Twenty years ago, when they were teenagers, Holly and Nicola were the outsiders at summer camp. Holly was the plump one, a dreamer who longed to be an artist. Nicola was the shy, plain one who wanted nothing more than to be beautiful. Their cabin nemesis was Lexi. Rich, spoiled, evil Lexi. One night, Holly and Nicola team up to pull one, daring act of vengeance. But they never dream that this one act will have repercussions that will reach into the future, even twenty years later. And they never realize the secret pain that Lexi holds very close, and how their need for revenge costs Lexi a great deal.

Today, Holly is a successful gallery owner, who has put her own artistic dreams on hold. She struggles with her weight and for approval from her constantly-criticizing boyfriend. Nicola, is an almost-famous actress who believes that one little plastic surgery fix is just what she needs to put her over the edge into fame. And Lexi…Lexi is down on her luck and totally broke.

Holly will do anything to be thin. Lexi will do anything to be rich. And Nicola will do anything to be pretty. Thin, Rich, Pretty is the story of three women who believe that happiness is the next dress size down, the next dollar figure up, or the next appreciative glance from a stranger. But mostly it's the story of how three women save each other, and show each other the path to true contentment. Told with Beth Harbison's knack for thirty and fortysomething nostalgia, and heartwarming humor, Thin, Rich, Pretty will strike a chord with any woman who has ever got on the scale, looked in the mirror, or the bank, and said, “if only…”
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Beth Harbison grew up in Potomac, Maryland, in the shadow of Washington, D.C. Apart from the occasional irritation at being held up in traffic by a presidential motorcade, she has remained fairly uninvolved in the politics that define her home town.

After an unsuccessful stint in public education, she was moved to a private school for rotten kids, where she met some of her best friends for life.

After going to school at the University of London, and graduating with a BA from the University of Maryland, she began writing.   Shoe Addicts Anonymous, in 2007, was her first mainstream novel after writing four cookbooks and twenty-two Silhouette Romances. It hit the New York Times bestseller list in 2008, and was followed by Secrets of a Shoe Addict and Hope in a Jar.

2010 saw the publication of Thin Rich Pretty, the story of three girls who meet in summer camp as young teens and have to face the music for that fateful summer twenty years later.

Currently, Beth lives in Maryland with her family and dogs. In her time off, she enjoys wine with friends and watching terrible reality TV shows.

MY THOUGHTS/REVIEW:
Beth Harbison’s THIN, RICH, PRETTY is veiled as chick lit but does have an important message to it. While enjoying Harbison’s easy, quick read, one also should give notice to the lesson taught that so many young women today need to heed. Growing up wanting to be the “ideal” woman as portrayed in the media-“a thin, rich, pretty girl”- carries over into adulthood where hopefully women learn that it is WHO they are on the inside that counts.

THIN, RICH, PRETTY tells the story of three women starting when they meet in summer camp and catching up in present day twenty years later. Harbison goes back and forth between the two time periods and give a nice comparison view.

At summer camp, as young girls, we find Nicola is embarrassed because she has a large nose, while Holly has the typical weight problem that haunts so many of our youth today. Both have poor self-esteem and are kidded about their looks. Lexi, the “rich girl”, commanders the rest of the campers in their shared cabin to be hateful to Holly and Nicola. A typical middle school age social pattern. This results in Holly and Nicola forming a bond as the two unhappy girls unite to “hate” Lexi so that they can feel better. Lexi comes from a very wealthy background and so that is what they hone in on to harass her about. Children, and girls at summer camp are no exception, can be very cruel, and this is depicted well in the novel. Of course, Holly and Nicola never get to know Lexi enough in order to find out that she is covering her emotions after having her mother die and made to get used to a step-mother.

Present day finds the three “girls” still fighting their demons but on a larger scale. Holly with her weight, Nicola her nose, and Lexi with money, but time does change even these things. Nicola is living in Los Angeles as a working actor trying for her big break. She is sure if she has plastic surgery she will then be pretty enough to break though the barrier of major stardom. Holly has just gotten engaged to Randy although it isn’t official yet in that Randy claims he wants to marry her, however she only needs to lose a few pounds first. As for Lexi, her father just died and his will was changed to leave everything to her step-mother thus meaning Lexi has one month to move out of her family’s home and find a job to support herself. She has never worked before!

Will this fun, romantic read turn out happily ever after? Will Nicola like who she sees when the bandages are off and thus become an overnight success? Will dieting to win her man’s love be what Holly really wanted? Does Lexi find a job that will allow her to live in the manner she is accustomed to, or at least not be homeless? Or will all these things go haywire and the women resolve their own dilemma in a decent and rational way? As a fan of Beth Harbison’s SHOE ADDICTS ANONYMOUS, I was happy  to listen to the audio book of THIN, RICH, PRETTY and was not disappointed. The characters were well fleshed out and Harbison made me like them as well as care about what happened to them. Although it was predictable for the most part, it was still enjoyable fun, and did have a nice moral to it.

THE HEALING CODE: A REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY

GIVEAWAY ENDED
THE HEALING CODE
BY ALEXANDER LOYD, PhD, ND
with BEN JOHNSON, MD, DO, NMD

ABOUT THE BOOK:
THE HEALING CODE is your healing kit for life--to heal the issues you know about, and the ones you don't.  In 2001, Dr. Alex Loyd discovered how to activate a physical function built into the body that consistently and predictably removes the source of 95% of all illness and disease so that the neuro-immune system takes over its job of healing whatever is wrong with the body. His findings were validated by tests and by the thousands of people from all over the world who have used The Healing Codes system to heal virtually any physical, emotional, or relational issue, as well as realize breakthroughs in success.

His testing also revealed that there is a "Universal Healing Code" that will heal most issues for most people. In this book you will get that Universal Healing Code, which takes only minutes to do. The book also includes:
  • The Seven Secrets of life, health, and prosperity
  • The 10-second Instant Impact technique for defusing daily stress
  • The Heart Issues Finder, the only test that identifies your source issues in a succinct personalized report.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Alex Loyd, PhD, ND holds doctorates in Pyschology and Naturopathic Medicine. His 12-year search for a cure for his wife's depression led to the discovery of The Healing Codes system to heal the source of virtually any physical, emotional, success, or relational issue. You may try to ask Dr. Loyd a questions by going HERE!

You may also find it interesting to visit Dr. Loyd's website HERE. I found it fun to look at some of the success stories under the testimonial section and read what people found worked for them.

MY REVIEW:
THE HEALING CODE by Alexander Loyd, PhD, ND with Ben Johnson, MD, DO, NMD,  is a self-healing program that centers around certain codes. Supposedly, this program will cure all your ills including ones you don’t even know you have.  In the book, it talks about how Dr. Loyd discovered a way to trigger something that is within our bodies that will surprisingly eradicate the cause of almost all illness every time. This then allows our immune system to finish healing the problem. There are Codes that heal certain things but the book only gives one code. If you wanted the others, you would have to be taking a course or purchase a special program from Dr. Lloyd’s organization the way I understand it. The book explains that this all started when Dr. Lloyd’s wife was depressed and he was trying to find a cure for her. It says that both of the Lloyds read and researched so many things but nothing worked. And so Dr. Lloyd worked and finally came up with THE HEALING CODE.

The book itself is divided into two main parts. The first part is about The Seven Secrets To Life, Health, and Prosperity. This section was interesting but also a little over my head in some ways. The second main part is filled with stories and testimonials from people who have used this program and the codes. There were some pretty interesting tales here. It also includes a universal code that comes with diagrams and instructions on how to use it. Since the program itself has codes for healing different things, I am not sure the book will do you much good other than opening up for you what the Healing Codes are so you can then go further with it. It does require financial investment to get the other codes and complete the program so I would be very sure you want to do it before you invest. Reading the book should help you make a good decision.

My opinion: THE HEALING CODE was interesting in some ways but I am just too much of a skeptic to believe it can work. Do I think that the body function that Dr. Lloyd says will be activated and start to cure us works? In a way, as I believe it all centers around removing STRESS which as we all know is responsible for many of our illnesses.  So as far as that goes, that part was beneficial. Learning to “chill out” and breath correctly and allow your heart to calm down is of course a good thing so if you get nothing but that out of this book, then it is probably worth it. Lastly, for those who try this and have faith in it and there are scores of people, more power to them. Who am I to doubt what they say? I just don’t think I am the right person for this particular “cure”.

BAFFLING BINGO MYSTERY DAY: RESERVED FOR THE CAT: AN ELEMENTAL MASTERS NOVEL GIVEAWAY

WELCOME TO BOOKIN' WITH BINGO'S
"BAFFLING BINGO DAY"
I'M EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE THIS THURSDAY'S
MYSTERY BOOK CHOICE IS.....
GIVEAWAY ENDED
RESERVED FOR THE CAT
An Elemental Masters Novel
BY MERCEDES LACKEY

ABOUT THE BOOK:
Based loosely on the tale of Puss in Boots, Reserved for the Cat takes place in 1910 in an alternate London. A young dancer, penniless and desperate, is sure she is going mad when a cat begins talking to her mind-to-mind. But her feline guide, actually an Elemental Earth Spirit, helps her to impersonate a famous Russian ballerina and achieve the success she’s been dreaming of. Unfortunately she also attracts the attention of another Elemental Spirit—a far more threatening one—and the young dancer must once again turn to her mysteriously powerful four-legged furry friend.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Mercedes Lackey is a full-time writer and has published numerous novels and works of short fiction, including the best-selling Heralds Of Valdemar series. She is also a professional lyricist and a licensed wild bird rehabilitator. Mercedes has a degree in biology from Purdue University. Like many writers she has worked at a variety of jobs, including short stints as a waitress, security guard and artist's model. She lives in Oklahoma with her husband, artist Larry Dixon, and their flock of parrots.

A LITTLE ABOUT THE ELEMENTAL MASTERS SERIES:
The setting of the "Elemental Masters" is an alternative Earth during the early 1900s. The main and perhaps sole difference between this world and our reality is that magic exists, controlled by those who have mastery over the four classical elements (fire, air, water, earth). The majority of the tales take place in England, with The Fire Rose taking place in North America and focusing on the San Francisco area. While history does tend to follow the real-life time line, historic calamities such as the great urban fire of Chicago and the earthquake in San Francisco are attributed to the elemental images that serve as the series namesakes.

The world of the "Elemental Masters" is home to two main types of magic: the elemental magic that plays an important part in the series and ESP that is largely explored in The Wizard of London. There have been mentions of different types and degrees of magical ability in the series.

Elemental magic is the most commonly seen form of magic in the series, with every book having at least a couple of elemental masters as major characters, with one serving as the antagonist. The masters' abilities are tied with their ability to see and control spirits of a particular elemental affinity. Elemental magicians are classed by their affinity (Earth, Air, Fire, and/or Water) and by their mastery of their magic; one can be an Elemental Magician or an Elemental Master.

Other books in the series and what they are based on are listed below:
  • The Fire Rose based on Beauty and the Beast
  • The Serpent's Shadow based on Snow White
  • The Gates of Sleep based on Sleeping Beauty
  • Phoenix And Ashes based on Cinderella
  • The Wizard of London based on The Snow Queen
  • Reserved for the Cat based on Puss in Boots
