204 ROSEWOOD LANE: A DEBBIE MACOMBER GIVEAWAY

 GIVEAWAY ENDED
204 ROSEWOOD LANE
A Cedar Cove Novel
BY DEBBIE MACOMBER

ABOUT THE BOOK:
Dear Reader,

If you've been to Cedar Cove before we've probably met. You can usually find me either at home or at the public library, where I work. I've lived in this town all my life and raised two daughters here. But my husband and I—well, about six months ago, he disappeared. Just . . . disappeared. Where's Dan? Why did he go? Who's he with? Will I ever find out?

My hometown, my family and friends, bring me comfort during this difficult time. Comfort and a sense of shelter. I'm continually reminded that life can and does go on. For instance, everyone's been discussing weddings and babies lately. Justine—the only daughter of my best friend, Olivia Lockhart - impulsively got married a little while ago. My own daughter, Kelly, had a baby. Unfortunately, she refuses to accept that Dan might not return to see his first grandchild. My older daughter, Maryellen, is more realistic. I think she's seeing a new man, but for some reason she won't tell me who it is.

Then there's Jack, who's been pursuing a romance with Olivia, and his son, Eric, and Eric's girlfriend, Shelly (I think she's pregnant), and Zach and Rosemary Cox, whose marriage is reputedly on the skids and . . . Well, just come on over and we'll talk!

Grace

MORE ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
In that I do so many of Debbie Macomber's books, I wanted to put a little something new under this "bio" section. So here, from Debbie's website, are some interview questions and answers to help to know her better. If you would like to read her full biography, please go HERE and learn all about this multi-talented and wonderful woman.

1. What do you enjoy most about writing? What kinds of scenes do you enjoy writing the most?
As I often say—and it's the truth—I enjoy every aspect of writing, including revisions. I've worked with Paula Eykelhof for years—a quarter of a century, believe it or not—and our goal is always to produce the best book possible, and that requires doing rewrites, sometimes more than one. I enjoy writing scenes with a touch of humor.

2. What are the longest and shortest times it's taken you to write a book?
Sorry . . . I don't remember. I've always written to deadlines. When I start a book, I take my calendar and work out how many pages I need to write every day in order to meet my deadline. Then I stay in my office each day until those pages are completed.

3. How do you like writing stories that are set around a holiday like Christmas vs. a story that's more about everyday life?
The holiday season adds an element of fun. Since I've written a Christmas story nearly every year of my career, you might have guessed that I'm especially fond of the season. Not only do I love helping my readers enjoy it, I also find that a Christmas setting tends to heighten the poignancy and even the drama of a story.

4. How do you get the ideas and characters for your books?
Because my gift is that of storytelling, this part comes naturally to me. Story ideas are all around us; life itself presents us with plenty of ideas every single day. It's a matter of being open to them—and then fashioning them into a story with believable and compelling characters. And I think most writers find that the people around them provide the basis for the fictional characters they create. I certainly do. It can be a matter of taking a trait from one person, a physical characteristic from another, a way of speaking from a third and then combining them. Ultimately, believable characters come from the writer's observations about the people and situations around him or her.

AN EXCERPT FROM 204 ROSEWOOD LANE:
Grace Sherman stared down at the legal form that would start the divorce proceedings. She sat in the attorney's office with Maryellen, her oldest daughter, who'd come with her to offer support. Grace reminded herself that this should be straightforward, that her decision was made. She was ready to end her marriage, ready to piece together her shattered life. To begin again . . . But her hand shook as she picked up the pen.

The inescapable fact was that she didn't want this - but Dan hadn't left her with any other option.

Five months ago, in April, her husband of almost thirty-six years had disappeared. Vanished without a trace. One day everything was perfectly normal, and the next he was gone. Apparently by choice and without a word of explanation. Even now, Grace had difficulty believing that the man she'd lived with, the man she'd loved and with whom she'd had two daughters, could do anything as cruel as this.

If Dan had fallen out of love with her, she could accept that. She would've found enough pride, enough generosity, to release him without bitterness. If he was that miserable in their marriage, she would've gladly set him free to find happiness with someone else. What she couldn't forgive was the misery he'd heaped on their family's shoulders, what he'd done to their daughters. Especially Kelly.....To finish reading this excerpt, visit Debbie Macomber's website HERE

THE BEDTIME BOOK FOR DOGS: REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY

GIVEAWAY ENDED
THE BEDTIME BOOK
FOR DOGS
BY BRUCE LITTLEFIELD

ABOUT THE BOOK:
THE BEDTIME BOOK FOR DOGS is a charming story about a dog who decides that he'd rather walk to the park by himself than wait for his human companion-and discovers that all of his usual activities aren't as much fun without a good friend to share them with. This is an adorably packaged book with illustrations by Paul Heath that makes a perfect gift for dog lovers of all ages, with words dogs will understand and kids will want to read again and again.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Bruce Littlefield is a best-selling author and lifestyle expert. His brand of American fun is seen on the Today Show, the Early Show, and The View. He is the author of Airstream Living, Garage Sale America, Merry Christmas America, and co-writer of the best-selling Shark Tales with ABC Shark Tank star Barbara Corcoran. Nothing makes him happier than his pal, Westminster. You can visit his website at BruceLittlefield.com.

MY REVIEW:
"Come. Sit. Stay. I want to tell you a story. I think you'll like it. It's about a TREAT and a good dog, a very good dog who wanted to go play. But his friend was busy....".

Yes, here is the first charming book that has been published for dog lovers to read to their dogs, as well as to children. Children will in turn read it to their pet. THE BEDTIME BOOK FOR DOGS is written by best-selling author Bruce Littlefield who has taken this simple story and turned in into something the whole family can enjoy. With the average dog knowing 167 words, watch and see how your dog reacts to test how much smarter YOUR pet pup is.

The simple, brightly colored illustrations make this a popular book with early readers for sure, as well as younger ones who will love to see the story unfold in pictures. Your dog will especially like the part about getting a treat while your youngster will like that their dog is referred to as their friend. Please don't think that this is a children's book as it is aimed at dog owners and dogs. Children liking the book is just a bonus as I see it. I am so excited that Ms. M, my Blog Assistant (see right column) will be enjoying this book with my grandson and his dad for years to come. She deserves it! Pick up a copy now and share it with your puppy dog. You won't be sorry and man's best friend will be delighted that you thought of something so special for them.

LEFT NEGLECTED: A GREAT BOOK CLUB CHOICE AND A GIVEAWAY

GIVEAWAY ENDEDLEFT NEGLECTED
BY LISA GENOVA

ABOUT THE BOOK:
Sarah Nickerson is like any other career-driven supermom in Welmont, the affluent Boston suburb where she leads a hectic but charmed life with her husband Bob, faithful nanny, and three children—Lucy, Charlie, and nine-month-old Linus.

Between recruiting the best and brightest minds as the vice president of human resources at Berkley Consulting; shuttling the kids to soccer, day care, and piano lessons; convincing her son's teacher that he may not, in fact, have ADD; and making it home in time for dinner, it's a wonder this over-scheduled, over-achieving Harvard graduate has time to breathe.

A self-confessed balloon about to burst, Sarah miraculously manages every minute of her life like an air traffic controller. Until one fateful day, while driving to work and trying to make a phone call, she looks away from the road for one second too long. In the blink of an eye, all the rapidly moving parts of her jam-packed life come to a screeching halt.

A traumatic brain injury completely erases the left side of her world, and for once, Sarah relinquishes control to those around her, including her formerly absent mother. Without the ability to even floss her own teeth, she struggles to find answers about her past and her uncertain future.

Now, as she wills herself to regain her independence and heal, Sarah must learn that her real destiny—her new, true life—may in fact lie far from the world of conference calls and spreadsheets. And that a happiness and peace greater than all the success in the world is close within reach, if only she slows down long enough to notice.

Lisa is a member of the Dementia Advocacy, Support Network International and DementiaUSA and is an online columnist for the National Alzheimer's association. She lives with her husband and two children in Cape Cod. She is also the author of the New York Times bestselling novel, Still Alice.

MY BOOK CLUB CHOICE:
LEFT NEGLECTED makes a wonderful choice for book clubs. My book club, in fact, picked it this month with no input from me as they recognized the quality of the story. I am very excited to see how our discussion goes when we meet next month. If your book club wants to read LEFT NEGLECTED, this is the best time as it is now out in paperback. Also, Simon & Schuster not only gives a general section on how to start and run a book club HERE, but also has the Discussion Guide for LEFT NEGLECTED HERE. It gives a guide, questions and topics, as well as an interview with Lisa Genova to read and discuss as well. I hope some of you will try it with your book club, or if you aren't in a book club, perhaps you should try starting one. I love mine and have become close friends with people I didn't even know 6 years ago and probably wouldn't if it weren't for the club. Enjoy and good luck!

THE LIES THAT BIND - A COZY MYSTERY GIVEAWAY

 GIVEAWAY ENDED
THE LIES THAT BIND
A Bibliophile Mystery
BY KATE CARLISLE

ABOUT THE BOOK:
One bookbinder. One bully. One beau. Looks like someone has got to go...

When it comes to rare books and antiquities, Brooklyn Wainwright is a master. Which is why she's returned home to San Francisco to teach a bookbinding class at Bay Area Book Arts. Unfortunately, BABA director Layla Fontaine is a horrendous host who pitches fits and lords over her subordinates. With the help of her beau, British security officer Derek Stone, Brooklyn manages to put up a brave face and endure.

Unfortunately, someone else is not so forgiving. Layla is found dead of a gunshot wound, and Brooklyn is bound and determined to investigate. But when Layla's past ends up intertwined with Derek's, Brooklyn realizes that the case is much more personal than she thought—and that the killer might want to close the book on her for good.

MEET BROOKLYN:
Thanks to Author Kate Carlisle's wonderful website, here is a little about the main character in this Bibliophile Mystery Series. I thought you would like to meet her and can go HERE to read all about "her world" including friends and places that Kate has presented on her site.
Welcome to Brooklyn's world. Help yourself to an Irish coffee or a mocha latte, relax and read all about Brooklyn, her friends and her world. Click on the interactive map and take a tour of Brooklyn's favorite spots in San Francisco for dining, drinking, shopping, reading, strolling—and murder. Among other hot spots, you'll find her favorite fictional library from HOMICIDE IN HARDCOVER and the real-life book arts center used as the basis for the fictional Bay Area Book Arts in THE LIES THAT BIND.

Brooklyn's World

READ AN EXCERPT FROM THE LIES THAT BIND:
Layla Fontaine, Executive Artistic Director of the Bay Area Book Arts Center, was tall, blond and strikingly beautiful, with a hair trigger temper and a reputation for ruthlessness. Some in the book community called her a malevolent shark. Others disagreed, insisting that calling her a shark only served to tarnish the reputation of decent sharks everywhere.

Since I had business with the shark, I arrived at the Book Center early and parked my car in the adjacent lot. Grabbing the small package I'd brought, I climbed out of the car and immediately started to shiver. It was dusk and the March air in San Francisco was positively frigid. I seemed to be in the direct path of a brisk wind that whooshed straight off the Bay over AT&T Park and up Potrero Hill. Huddling inside my down vest, I quickly jogged to the front entrance of the Book Center and climbed the stairs.

I almost whimpered as I stepped inside the warm interior and rubbed my arms to rid myself of the chills. But looking around, I grinned with giddy excitement. It was the first night of my latest bookbinding class and I, Brooklyn Wainwright, Super Bookbinder, was like a kid on the first day of grammar school. A nerdy kid, of course; one who actually looked forward to spending the day in school. I couldn't help myself. This place was a veritable shrine to paper and books and bookbinding arts, and I had to admit, grudgingly, that it was all due to Layla Fontaine.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Golden Heart and Daphne du Maurier Award winning author Kate Carlisle spent over twenty years working in television production as an Associate Director for game and variety shows, including The Midnight Special, Solid Gold and The Gong Show. She traveled the world as a Dating Game chaperone and performed strange acts of silliness on The Gong Show. She also studied acting and singing, toiled in vineyards, collected books, joined a commune, sold fried chicken, modeled spring fashions and worked for a cruise ship line, but it was the year she spent in law school that finally drove her to begin writing fiction. It seemed the safest way to kill off her professors. Those professors are breathing easier now that Kate spends most of her time writing near the beach in Southern California where she lives with her perfect husband.

A lifelong love of old books and an appreciation of the art of bookbinding led Kate to create the Bibliophile Mysteries, featuring rare book expert Brooklyn Wainwright, whose bookbinding and restoration skills invariably uncover old secrets, treachery and murder. Kate is a member of Sisters in Crime, Mystery Writers of America, International Thriller Writers and Romance Writers of America. She loves to drink good wine and watch other people cook.

Despite the appearance of overnight success, Kate's dream of publication took many, many years to fulfill. If you're wondering why, HERE'S the real scoop. (Follow the link to see details of Kate's delightful bio with pictures on her website!)

THREE ROMONAS ARE MORE FUN! A GIVEAWAY

  Ramona
GIVEAWAY ENDED
WIN THREE
RAMONA QUIMBY BOOKS!
BY BEVERLY CLEARY

ABOUT RAMONA FOREVER:
Ramona is back! New and old friends alike will rejoice in Beverly Cleary's latest book about spunky Ramona and the whole Quimby family.
From the minute that Howie Kemp's "rich" Uncle Hobart arrives from Saudi Arabia, things are off to a rousing start. There are new beginnings and discoveries and two very special surprises -- one surprise is big and one is very little.

It's a time of change for all the Quimbys; a time of new joys and little sadnesses, too. There are new worries -- Mr Quimby is worried about finding a teaching job, Ramona is worried they may have to move if he does, and Beezus is worried about her teenage complexion.
And through it all Ramona, a grown up third-grader, remains a sometimes pesty, sometimes brave, sometimes blunderful, but always wonderful Ramona -- forever!

ABOUT RAMONA AND HER MOTHER:
Beverly Cleary has given books to each member of the Quimby household except Mrs. Quimby. Now she gets her turn at last in a story that hits the high and low points of a working mother's life as seen from Ramona's seven-and-a-half-year-old viewpoint.

Inevitably domestic tensions, not without their amusing side, occasionally arise. Mr. and Mrs. Quimby sometimes forget who is to do what, as when the Crock-Pot is not plugged in and dinner remains uncooked. Beezus acquires a ludicrous teased hairdo at the student body shop while Ramona gets a becoming pixie haircut. Ramona, who feels unloved, takes to twitching her nose like a rabbit in a cozy picture book until her teacher becomes concerned that something is making her nervous.

Yet Ramona is wrong. She is loved, and readers will rejoice with her when she discovers the wonderful truth. Few writers today are as skilled as Mrs. Cleary at showing families in the round, and here she is at the peak of her powers.

ABOUT RAMONA AND HER FATHER:
Ramona just wants everyone to be happy. If only her father would smile and joke again, her mother would look less worried, her sister would be cheerful, and Picky-picky would eat his cat-food. But Ramona's father has lost his job, and nobody in the Quimby household is in a very good mood.
Ramona tries to cheer up the family as only Ramona can -- by rehearsing for life as a rich and famous star of television commercials, for instance -- but her best efforts only make things worse. Her sister, Beezus, calls her a, pest, her parents lose patience with her, and her teacher claims she's forgotten her- manners. But when her father admits he wouldn't trade her for a million dollars, Ramona knows everything is going to work out fine in the end.

ABOUT AUTHOR BEVERLY CLEARY:
Beverly Cleary was born in McMinnville, Oregon, and until she was old enough to attend school she lived on a farm in Yamhill, a town so small it had no library. Her mother arranged to have books sent to their tiny town from the state library and acted as a librarian in a room over a bank. It was there that Mrs. Cleary learned to love books. Generations of children have grown up with Ramona Quimby, Henry Huggins, Ralph Mouse, and all of their friends, families, and assorted pets. Beverly Cleary continues to capture the hearts and imaginations of children of all ages throughout the world.
