THE STRANGER YOU SEEK: A GUEST REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY

 GIVEAWAY ENDED
THE STRANGER YOU SEEK
BY AMANDA KYLE WILLIAMS

ABOUT THE BOOK:
The papers have called me a monster. You’ve either concluded that I am a braggart as well as a sadist or that I have a deep and driving need to be caught and punished.

In the sweltering heat of an Atlanta summer, a killer is pushing the city to its breaking point, preying on the unsuspecting, writing taunting letters to the media, promising more death. Desperate to stop the Wishbone Killer before another victim meets a shattering end, A.P.D. lieutenant Aaron Rauser turns to the one person he knows can penetrate a deranged mind: ex–FBI profiler Keye Street.

And you must certainly be wondering if I am, in fact, the stranger you seek.

Keye was a rising young star at the Bureau until addiction derailed her career and her life. Now sober and fighting to stay so, Keye picks up jobs where she can get them: catching adulterers, serving subpoenas, chasing down bailjumpers, and dodging the occasional bullet. With multiple victims, little to go on, and an entire police force looking for direction, the last thing Keye wants is to be pulled into the firestorm of Atlanta’s worst nightmare.

Shall I convince you?

And then it suddenly becomes clear that the hunter has become the hunted—and the stranger she seeks is far closer than she ever dared imagine.

An electrifying thriller debut, The Stranger You Seek introduces a brash, flawed, and unforgettable heroine in a complex, twisting novel that takes readers deep into a sultry Southern summer, a city in the grips of chaos, and a harrowing cat-and-mouse game no reader will ever forget.

PRAISE FOR THE STRANGER YOU SEEK:
“An exceptionally smart, harrowing, and funny character-driven debut by a welcome new thriller writer.”
New York Times bestselling author Karin Slaughter

“There’s a new voice in Atlanta, and her name is Amanda Kyle Williams. A dark, gritty thriller, The Stranger You Seek is a sensational debut. Readers will relish this story’s many captivating, powerful, and compelling layers.”
New York Times bestselling author Julia Spencer-Fleming

The Stranger You Seek is a page-turning thrill ride from a writer with a sure hand, keen psychological insight, and a devious imagination. Keye Street is my kind of detective: complicated, savvy, flawed, and blessed with a sharply observant dark wit. This is a great read from a powerful new voice.”
New York Times bestselling author Joshilyn Jackson

“From its chilling first page, The Stranger You Seek hurtles heroine Keye Street into a race against time that crosses the finish line with a satisfying twist, leaving readers breathlessly waiting for the next installment.”
New York Times bestselling author Wendy Corsi Staub

The Stranger You Seek is filled with rich, evocative prose that transports you straight to the South and right into the psyche of new heroine Keye Street. She’s formidable, but poignantly human as she struggles to navigate her present while battling shadows of her past. You can almost feel the Georgia humidity when you read this book, but you’ll definitely feel the heat when the victims of a calculating, relentless serial killer start stacking up. This book burns rubber to the end, so carve out some downtime, because you won’t want to leave Keye hanging.”
—PJ Tracy, author of the Monkeewrench series

“Keye Street is a kick-ass protagonist! Strap yourself in for a twisting, turning carnival ride of a plot through the New South—this is compulsive reading!”
—Vicki Lane, author of The Day of Small Things

The Stranger You Seek is a riveting debut with rapid-fire pacing, expert plotting, and an introduction to the memorable and winning Keye Street. Both Williams and Street should be around for the long haul, so discover them now from the start.”
—Alafair Burke, author of Long Gone

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Amanda Kyle Williams has contributed to short story collections and as a freelance writer for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. She worked as a house painter, a property manager, a sales rep, a commercial embroiderer, a courier, a VP of manufacturing at a North Georgia textile mill, and owned Latch Key Pets, a pet sitting and dog walking business. She also worked with a PI firm in Atlanta on surveillance operations, and became a court-appointed process server.

“We do what we have to do to buy the groceries while we’re waiting for that big break.  Working as a process server and with PI and courier firms in Atlanta was wonderful preparation for developing the Keye Street character.  It takes time and work to find that unique voice as a writer, and for that voice to reach pitch.  And more time to then develop a character that’s the perfect vehicle for that voice.  Keye Street is that character for me.  She’s slightly damaged, seriously flawed; a sober alcoholic with a mighty Krispy Kreme doughnut addiction.  She makes jokes to avoid intimacy.  She’s more afraid of heartbreak than she is of whipping out her ten millimeter Glock.  She feels real to me.  The series is dedicated to my deeply southern Chinese-American niece, Anna.”

In order to lend authenticity to her Keye Street series, Amanda took courses in criminal profiling and practical homicide investigation, and frequently consults with professionals in law enforcement, bond enforcement, criminal profiling and forensics.

The Stranger You Seek (Bantam Aug. 30, 2011) is Amanda’s first mainstream crime novel and the first in the Keye Street series. Bantam will also publish Book Two and Three in the series. Stranger In The Room (Fall 2012). Don’t Talk To Strangers (Fall 2013).

Amanda Kyle Williams lives in Decatur, Georgia, which produces unending fodder for her fiction.  She is currently hard at work on the next Keye Street Thriller.

GUEST REVIEW:
Let's welcome a favorite reviewer, Larry DeLeon. As a producer, Larry is quite at home producing excellence and doesn't stop even when he is doing reviews for me.  Larry lives in North Carolina with his supportive and lovely wife, and their sweet dog, Hoover. Thank you, Larry!

I really liked this book. Author Amanda Kyle Williams brings us a great new lead character for murder mystery fans in Keye Street, an Asian-American alchoholic ex-FBI profiler caught between her heritage and her childhood growing up in the South. The juxtaposition of a grisly serial killer story with a funny, flawed protagonist is a tricky feat, but Williams pulls it off brilliantly.  The story kept me glued and I loved all the characters in this book (except the killer, who was also fascinating). I alternately laughed and shuddered, then caught by surprise at the ending.  Even the city of Atlanta is an important character, although the chamber of commerce might take some exception.

If you've been looking for a fresh voice and characters in a genre that is often predictable, overly familiar and unsatisfying, you should give THE STRANGER YOU SEEK a read. Like movie sequels, recurring detectives can wear thin over time. Let's hope Keye Street's next adventure is as good as this one. Two thumbs up.

THE WHOLE PACKAGE
BY CYNTHIA ELLINGSEN

ABOUT THE BOOK:
It's a man's world-but in this outrageous debut, the girls aren't playing by the rules.

For lifelong friends Jackie, Cheryl, and Doris, life hasn't turned out according to plan. But after a drunken night sampling the delights at a strip club for women, the ladies stumble upon an ingenious idea and open up The Whole Package-the world's first restaurant staffed exclusively by very attractive men. Mixing business with pleasure can be risky, but for these three best friends, getting a little bit outrageous just might be what it takes to make their mark in the world.

PRAISE FOR THE WHOLE PACKAGE:
"The friendship between the women is realistic, the characters funny, and the premise well-executed. Readers will giggle and grin from start to finish, and will surely be eager for Ellingsen's next novel."

AUTHOR GUEST POST:
Many thanks to Cynthia for this wonderful Guest Post...enjoy!

Hi Bookin’ With Bingo! I’m thrilled at the opportunity to guest post with you. It’ll be a blast to talk with you about my debut novel, The Whole Package.

The Whole Package is about three best friends who lose everything. One loses her job, one loses her husband and one loses her fortune. Together, they open a restaurant staffed by scantily clad men.

Sexist? Maybe.

Hot? Absolutely.

I have to admit, one of the most fun things about writing The Whole Package was creating the scenes in the restaurant, including the crazy opening night.

Originally, this scene was the wildest bachelorette party you could imagine. I toned it down quite a bit, but it’s still as naughty as can be. One of my favorite characters on opening night is an old lady on super bad behavior:

Cheryl’s eyes fell on an old lady. Even in her hunched and fragile state, this grandma had managed to find her footing on top of a chair. She was standing there at full height, overlooking the crowd from above.

“Get down,” Cheryl cried, trying to push through the crowd. “We don’t have death insurance!”

The old lady gave Cheryl a beatific grin. As a line of oily back-up dancers took the stage, the old woman raised her arms in the air and screamed, “Aiyee aiyee aiyee.” The catcall was louder than a cab whistle. Everyone in the restaurant turned to stare.

Delighted to have an audience, the old lady ran her hands over her sagging body and eyeballed the line of handsome young men.
“Hi honey,” the old woman called. “You looking for a date?”

The thing that makes me laugh about this woman is her complete, unabashed enthusiasm. She is living her life and loving it! Of course, she is putting herself in danger by standing on that rickety chair.

Gabe leapt back into the center of the restaurant. He started snapping his fingers like Patrick Swayze in the last, triumphant dance scene of Dirty Dancing. The dancers crowded round. To the beat of the music, they gyrated in unison.

The old woman remained on top of her chair, gyrating right along with them.

“Aiyee aiyee aiyee,” she cried, wiggling her hips to the music. “Come and get it!”

As everyone watched, the old woman fumbled with the top buttons of her shirt. Luckily, her arthritic fingers protested the action so instead, the woman grabbed for her heavy leather purse and began swinging it over her head.

Cheryl grabbed Gabe and practically shoved him towards the old lady. “Get her down.”

Gabe nodded. He moved forward with careful, measured steps. The crowd leaned forward, hanging on every motion of the hunt. Just as he got close enough to grab her, the old woman took a flying leap off of the table. The crowd gasped as, for a moment, she hung in the air like a broken piñata. Before she could hit the ground, Anthony pushed Gabe aside and dove between him and the old woman. With strong arms and a heavy coat, Anthony caught her just before she could crash to the floor and shatter.

Eventually, the old lady gets completely out of control. She takes her clothes off and hides out in the bathroom but this is not the only piece of chaos. Everything goes wrong. The kitchen catches fire, the police and fire department show up, there are picketers on the front lawn...

The Grand Opening was definitely a Grand Disaster.

And it was so much fun to write.

KILL ME IF YOU CAN: REVIEW AND BONUS ENTRIES

KILL ME IF YOU CAN
BY JAMES PATTERSON
& MARSHALL KARP
MORE ABOUT THE BOOK:
Matthew Bannon, a poor art student living in New York City, finds a duffel bag filled with diamonds during a chaotic attack at Grand Central Station. Plans for a worry-free life with his gorgeous girlfriend Katherine fill his thoughts--until he realizes that he is being hunted, and that whoever is after him won't stop until they have reclaimed the diamonds and exacted their revenge.

Trailing him is the Ghost, the world's greatest assassin, who has just pulled off his most high-profile hit: killing Walter Zelvas, a top member of the international Diamond Syndicate. There's only one small problem: the diamonds he was supposed to retrieve from Zelvas are missing. Now, the Ghost is on Bannon's trail--but so is a rival assassin who would like nothing more than to make the Ghost disappear forever.

MORE ABOUT THE AUTHORS:
JAMES PATTERSON: In January, 2010, The New York Times Magazine featured James Patterson on its cover and hailed him as having "transformed book publishing." Time magazine named him "The Man Who Can't Miss," and he is a two-time Children's Choice Book Award "Author of the Year" nominee, a designation decided on by more than 15,000 children and teen readers.
In the past three years, James Patterson has sold more books than any other author (according to Bookscan), and in total, James's books have sold an estimated 220 million copies worldwide. Since 2006, one out of every seventeen hardcover fiction books sold was a Patterson title. He is the first author to have #1 new titles simultaneously on The New York Times adult and children's bestsellers lists and is the only author to have five new hardcover novels debut at #1 on the list in one year—a record-breaking feat he's accomplished every year since 2005. To date, James Patterson has had nineteen consecutive #1 New York Times bestselling novels, and holds the New York Times record for most Hardcover Fiction bestselling titles by a single author (63 total), which is also a Guinness World Record.

MARSHAL KARP: It’s been a great life so far.
I’ve been a writer all my life. Commercials, TV sitcoms, a play, a movie, and nobody wanted to know much about me. Now I’m an author, and people are stalking me. Well, maybe not stalking, but they sure have a lot of questions. Here goes…
IN THE BEGINNING…
I was born in Manhattan, but grew up in a small factory town across the river in New Jersey. But New York was a magnet for me. Happily I had family to visit in Harlem, Brooklyn, The Bronx, and every year I’d spend the summer with my aunt and uncle in Queens. My movie, Just Looking, is loosely based on those summers. It’s about a 14-year-old boy, who is fascinated with sex, but it’s 1955, so what’s he supposed to do? Well, in the movie, he does what I did in real life.

In high school my favorite English teacher, Cornelius O’Connor, encouraged me to write. But I knew my parents would be happier if I got a real job, so I went to Rutgers University to study biology and become a dentist. Really, a dentist.

Fortunately, I flunked biology. But I did well in English composition, and I was writing for the school paper, so I muddled through as an English major, with no real plans for what to do after graduation.

Uncle Sam, however, had serious plans. Vietnam. I had 110 percent chance of getting drafted, but I didn’t want to go to war. It wasn’t a political statement. It’s this phobia I have about being in a jungle with people shooting at me. So I joined the National Guard. I spent six months in active duty, most of it in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. I learned to build bridges, wrote letters to the girl back home, drove the 860 mile round trip to Chicago with my friend Barry Labovitz as many weekends as we could, and not much else. To read the rest of Marshall Karp's Bio, go to his website HERE.

MY REVIEW:
KILL ME IF YOU CAN is James Patterson’s newest literary contribution, this time with co-author Marshall Karp. I must say that this pair has great chemistry working together and Patterson came up with one of his best stories of late. All of the traditional Patterson patterns were there with the interestingly well drawn out characters, short chapters that keep you turning the pages, and the good guy and bad guy teams.  Of course, there is also a marvelous love interest. However, what made KILL ME IF YOU CAN so good was that there are a couple of bombshells in this one. Things I never saw coming and having read ALL his books, I usually can get a feel for something if not see it right off the top, but not here. I literally gasped out loud a couple of times.

The basic story is about Matthew Bannon, an art student studying in New York, who is head over heels in love with his professor, Katherine Sanborne. Matthew had been a marine and served a tour in both Afghanistan and Iraq and is now back in the states doing what he feels is his true calling. Art! Matthew is the kind of character you like from the start and Patterson does a good job of creating Matthew in that way. His relationship with Katherine is lovely and romantic. The story starts off with a really big bang literally, right in Grand Central Station, and Matthew finds himself right in the middle of it. Before he knows it, he has in his possession a bag filled with loose and very valuable diamonds. What was he to do but take the bag and run to safety? This was going to change his life but he could never even suspect in what ways and neither does the reader!

Once the owner of the diamonds finds out who has them, the chase is on and paid assassins are sent to get the diamonds and take out Bannon. How Matthew deals with his new found wealth and new found danger are a thrill ride from start to finish and if you aren’t really surprised by a couple of twists in the story, I will say you missed something. This truly is one you won’t put down as you can be sure to expect the unexpected in KILL ME IF YOU CAN.

LOST EDENS: A REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY

  GIVEAWAY ENDED
LOST EDENS
BY JAMIE PATTERSON

ABOUT THE BOOK:
For Jamie Patterson, the end of her marriage is signaled by betrayal and abandonment. When estranged husband Ben asks to live with Jamie again, she ignores her instincts, her family's concern, and her friends' doubts and sets about making a perfect home in a California beach town.

What follows in 33-year-old Patterson's debut reads more like a mystery (or a horror story) than an account of a relationship ruptured by infidelity. As Jamie's carefully titrated efforts walk a tightrope between wishful fantasy and cruel reality, we watch: enraptured, enraged, and endeared by this fearless yet fragile young woman who must end one way of life to forge a new one.

"Lost Edens" from Flight Creative Media on Vimeo.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Jamie Patterson is a writer, teacher, runner, and dog owner who has been writing since she was 9-years-old as the "kids corner" reporter for the Tangletown News in Minneapolis. Since then, she has written her way through life in four states and two continents and has completed four marathons. She is now an academic editor and lives in Minneapolis with her dog, Huey. This is her first book.

MY REVIEW:
Jamie Patterson’s LOST EDENS is a true story drawn from Jamie’s personal experience of the break up of her marriage and one that many people would benefit from reading. Besides being a writer, Patterson is also a teacher, runner, and a dog lover. She spent almost a decade trying to please everybody and always putting herself last. Jamie describes how very much she wanted her marriage to work and the great lengths she went to in order to make it happen. What she didn’t realize at the time is that no matter how desperate she was, or what all she did, there would never ultimately be the fairy tale marriage she dreamed of.

Domestic violence and spousal abuse is very difficult to read about but even harder to recognize by outsiders and most often by the partner who is involved and in denial. In all of Jamie’s efforts to please her husband, it becomes evident to readers that the undercurrent of low self-esteem is prevalent even though Jamie is not aware of it. As most do, she took the blame on herself but emotional and verbal abuse can be harder to acknowledge than even physical abuse.  The cost of such a relationship is devastating. In Jamie’s case, she had separated from her husband for a while but when he asked if he could come back, classic to this type of abuse, Jamie ignored family warnings and her own deep seeded denial. Jamie once again believes that making a perfect home in a lovely beach town will enable the couple to make things work this time. What happens after this is eye-opening to readers and Jamie alike as reality hits home in more ways than one. From Jamie’s point of view, it took a long time for her to find herself and that was only after her husband was gone. I found myself very relieved at the end of the book but wondered what inner scars might Jamie still have left to deal with.

Jamie Patterson is a fine writer and she has courageously shared her story. It is one that demonstrates how emotional abuse can eat away at one’s spirit until they finally break. It is so hard to recognize but looking back, easy to now see how manipulative the other party can be. When Jamie finally came to terms with the fact that her life was centered on her husband, it was a very important step in her recovery. This is a book that anyone who is in such a deadly relationship, or knows someone who is, should read. Even if you are not, it is a fascinating story and one that leaves you thinking long and hard about the inner selves of people we think we know but perhaps do not, including one’s self.

SAMPLE RECIPE:
 NEW BROOKLYN BLACKOUT CAKE
When I was a kid, my family spent summers at my grandfather’s house in Brooklyn, New York. My mom was a great baker but never baked in the summer. She had Ebinger’s. It was just a few blocks away and sold blueberry crumb pies, lemon meringue tarts, and Parker House rolls that were just as good as homemade. For company dinners, there was Ebinger’s special chocolate blackout cake. It had three layers of chocolate cake and a creamy chocolate filling, and was covered with thick fudge frosting and chocolate cake crumbs. Ebinger’s is long gone, but the cake recipe has appeared now and again in publications. My “new and improved” version has the same puddinglike filling, but it is slightly thicker and stays firmly on the cake layers. This dark chocolate cake also has the same tender texture, but unlike many such cakes, is easy to mix and does not require beating the egg yolks and whites separately. The best thing is that you never have to wait for company dinners to enjoy this cake. It is yours for the baking. —Elinor Klivans

INGREDIENTS:
For the filling
2 tablespoons unsweetened Dutch-process cocoa powder
1 1/2 cups hot water
3/4 cup sugar
3 ounces semisweet chocolate, chopped
3 tablespoons cornstarch dissolved in 2 tablespoons water
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup (4 tablespoons) unsalted butter, cut into 4 pieces
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the cake
2 ounces unsweetened chocolate, chopped
1/2 cup unsweetened Dutch-process cocoa powder
3/4 cup whole milk
2 cups cake flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
2 cups sugar
4 large eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
For the frosting
12 ounces semisweet chocolate, chopped
3/4 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
1/2 cup lukewarm water, 88°F to 90°F (31°C to 32°C)
1 tablespoon light corn syrup
2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Make the filling
1. In a medium saucepan, heat the cocoa powder, hot water, sugar, and chocolate over low heat, stirring constantly until the cocoa powder dissolves and the chocolate melts. Add the dissolved cornstarch and the salt, increase the heat to medium-high, and boil gently for 1 minute, stirring constantly, especially where the sides and bottom of the pan meet.
2. Remove the pan from the heat, add the butter and vanilla, and stir until the butter melts. Pour the filling into a bowl and press plastic wrap onto the surface to prevent a skin from forming. Refrigerate until the filling thickens, at least 5 hours or up to overnight. It should be the consistency of soft pudding.

Make the cake
1. Position a rack in the middle of the oven. Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C). Butter the bottom and sides of two 9-in round cake pans with 1 3/4- to 2-inch sides. Line the bottoms with parchment paper and butter the paper.
2. Place the chocolate, cocoa powder, and milk in a heatproof bowl (or the top of a double boiler) and place it over, but not touching, barely simmering water in a saucepan (or the bottom of the double boiler). Stir until the chocolate is melted, the cocoa powder dissolves, and the mixture is smooth. Remove from the heat and set aside to cool to lukewarm.
3. Meanwhile, sift the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt together in a medium bowl.
4. In a large bowl with an electric mixer on medium speed beat the butter and sugar until light in color and smooth, about 2 minutes. Stop the mixer and scrape the sides of the bowl as needed. Add 2 of the eggs and mix until each incorporated. Add the remaining 2 eggs and the vanilla and mix until incorporated. Beat for 1 minute more. Reduce the speed to low and mix in the cooled chocolate mixture until blended and smooth. Add the flour mixture, mixing just until the flour is incorporated and the batter looks smooth. Pour the batter into the prepared pans.
5. Bake just until the tops of the cakes feel firm when lightly touched and a toothpick inserted in the center of each cake comes out clean, about 40 minutes. Cool the cakes in the pans on wire racks for 10 minutes. Use a small, sharp knife to loosen each cake from the sides of the pan, and invert each cake onto a wire rack. Carefully remove the paper and place it loosely on the cake. Let the cake layers cool thoroughly, then discard the paper.

Make the frosting
1. Place the chocolate and butter in a heatproof bowl (or the top of a double boiler) and place it over, but not touching, barely simmering water in a saucepan (or the bottom of the double boiler). Stir until the chocolate and butter are melted and smooth. Remove from the heat and set aside to cool slightly. Check with your fingertips that the temperature of the lukewarm water feels similar to that of the chocolate. (It should be 88°F to 90°F (31°C to 32°C) when measured with an instant-read thermometer.)
2. Add the lukewarm water all at once to the chocolate mixture and gently whisk until the frosting is smooth. It will thicken slightly when the water is added. Stir in the corn syrup and vanilla. Let the frosting sit at room temperature until it cools and thickens slightly, about 30 minutes.

Frost the cake
1. Invert a serving plate on top of one of the cake layers and turn it so the cake is top up. Tuck a strip of wax paper under the edge of the cake all the way around to keep the plate clean. Use a long serrated knife, cut the cake layer horizontally into two even layers, leaving the layers in place. Carefully slip the removable bottom of a tart pan or spring-form pan between the layers, lift the top layer, and set aside. Use a thin metal spatula to spread about half of the cold filling over the bottom half of the cake layer, leaving a 1/2-inch plain edge around. Carefully slide the top half of the cake layer on top of the filling, centering it over the bottom layer. Spread the remaining filling over the top.
2. Invert the second cake layer onto a plate so that it is top up, and cut it horizontally into two even layers. Carefully slide the top layer on top of the filling-topped stacked cake layers. You will have a three-layer cake. The remaining cake will be crumbled and used to cover the frosted cake.
3. Use the thin metal spatula to cover the top and sides of the cake with a thin layer of the frosting. Refrigerate the cake for 15 minutes to firm the cake and filling. Spread the remaining frosting over the top and sides of the chilled cake.
4. Using your fingers, crumble the remaining cake layer into small crumbs. Sprinkle the crumbs over the top of the cake and press them onto the sides, using all of the crumbs to make a thick crumb coating. Remove the wax paper strips. Use a large, sharp knife to cut the cake. The cake can be covered and refrigerated up to 2 days. Let it sit at room temperature for about 45 minutes before serving.
