When Edie Swan rides on her Harley back to her home in Redbud, Tennessee, she is there with a purpose. She has come to seek revenge for the people who she holds responsible for her father’s death—when he committed suicide. Her dad was an accountant at the town’s big business, Hammerbilt, and charged with embezzling funds back when Edie was a child. When her father jumped to his death, he might as well have taken his wife and daughter with him. Edie’s mom couldn’t handle the death and wound up in such bad shape, she also died from complications of mental disorders. Edie has returned to town with symbolic small black angels to avenge her father’s and consequently her mother’s deaths. Her father’s grave marker is a large black angel and that is why she chose the symbolic pieces.

Edie has a list of people she thinks are responsible and anonymously leaves one for each name on the list. Unfortunately for Edie, the recipients of the angels begin to die one at a time. Edie starts to wonder if there is any truth to the old wives’ tales about the legend the black angel has.

Meanwhile, the sheriff, Holt Drennen, looks into the deaths but sees no reason Edie could be involved and in fact, only wants to become involved with her in a romantic way as they are attracted to each other. Holt, however, always the local lawman, does start to feel Edie might be a suspect. Edie is quite taken up with the relationship but worries as the last name on her list turns out to be Holt’s father. What if he dies?

Edie realizes she must find out who is doing this as it may also lead to the person responsible for her father’s suicide. Things move quickly in the story and hold your attention. It is a romance and a mystery—a favorite combination when written well. Secrets are revealed, the thrills and action increase and the reader has a hard time trying to figure out who is the mystery murderer here. Is it Edie herself? Is it Holt’s father?

Annie Solomon gives her readers an unusual mystery and full of so many twists and turns that you can’t put the book down without having it continue to take over your thoughts. A great little beach read for the summer but don’t plan on a long stay, as you will probably read this in one or two sittings. Enjoyable, and just enough suspects to make it a thriller and the great chemistry between Holt and Edie will keep romance readers happy as well.
