MR. POPPER'S PENGUINS
AUDIO BOOK
written by
Richard and Florence Atwater
Read by Nick Sullivan

Oh, where could you have been if you have not read, heard read, read about, or read to someone, MR. POPPER'S PENGUINS??? As the Newbery Medal Honor Book of 1939, MR. POPPER'S PENGUINS resonates today just as it did then. When Richard Atwater died before he finished writing this classic, his wife Florence finished it for him. Together they were honored with the prestigious award. Parents have read this to the children, teachers have taught entire themed lessons around this wonderful classic. IF for some reason you have missed this story, then you are indeed in for a treat!

Mr. and Mrs. Popper live with their two children, Janie and Bill, in a town called Stillwater. Mr. Popper is a fairly good house painter but he does tend to daydream a lot about his favorite topic, Arctic explorers and the ice all around the North and the South Poles. Mrs. Popper and the children don't always understand Mr. Popper's daydreams, but that doesn't seem to bother him. Mr. Popper even wrote to Admiral Drake, who is exploring the South Pole.

Then one day Mr. Popper finds out that Admiral Drake read his letter and is sending him a gift. When a crate is delivered, Mr. Popper opens it and you guessed it, out hops a penguin! Mr. Popper is immediately taken with the little flightless guest and names him Captain Cook! Little Cook is cute, curious, and cunning. This description isn't unusual as one will note there is a good bit of alliteration in the story. However, Captain Cook although he is treated well with the Poppers walking him and fixing their refrigerator for him, still gets rather down and depressed. A call to the local zoo for help brings what the doctor, or the Captain needed...a friend--a female friend named Gerta. She quickly cheers him up and as one can guess, soon the pair of penguins present Popper with presents...eggs that turn into ten happy, hoppy, healthy, house guests! BUT Mr. Popper finds that caring for his LARGE family now takes more money than he has. What to do?

SPOILER ALERT!!!!!

Mr. Popper presents a way for the penguins to not only bring in some money but they become celebrities as well as they are taught to perform and they "hit the road" to become stars. Unfortunately, these stars are only allowed certain places and venues so when jealous fellow performers cause problems, Mr. Popper winds up in jail for going to the wrong theater. Who comes to his rescue? You guessed it! Admiral Drake. It is then that Popper has to make a big decision...let the stars go to Hollywood or with Drake to the North Pole to have penguin families develop there and make Popper's Penguins really happy.

Finally, Mr. Popper does what is best for the penguins and let's them go with Drake. The final surprise comes when Mr. Popper get his long time dream as he is invited to go along too. This is a story from 1939 that was an award winner then and still a winner today. Children still love it, teachers still use it, parents still read it, adults still recall it...so give Mr. Popper a listen on this excellently, lively read, audio book and once again enjoy the charming MR. POPPER'S PENGUINS!

A big Hey right back at ya little guy, come over for a visit someday. Maybe we can even get you an appearance gig. I'll pass the word to Miss Nottso Pudgy, Tweeny and Verry Pudgy.( although Verry is hard to get a hold of, he only shows up occasionally). I suppose I'll have to tell Surferguin too but he can tend to be snarky! Pudgy
