"Shortly after Alyse Myers’s mother dies, Alyse and her sisters are emptying her mother’s apartment, trying to decide what to discard and what to keep. Alyse covets only one thing — a wooden box that sits in the back of a closet. Its contents have been kept from Alyse her entire life. That box, she hopes, will contain answers to her questions: Who were her parents really, and why did her mother settle for so very little in her life?"

I've read a few reviews for this book (as well as yours just now) and I'm dying to know what it is that is in the box. This book first caught my attention because her first name is so close to mine.

What a nice review. Growing up, my Mom didn't ask who I thought I was; she would ask who I thought I was talking to. "Who do you think you are talking to?! I'm your mother! Don't you take that tone with me!" I did not grow up in an abusive home, but a home that commanded and demanded respect.

I hope that the box wound up bringing Alyce the answers that she needed to find some sort of closure to her life with her mother.

So nice to see so many familiar names chiming in on this "quickie"! Great odds, for you guys! Heather, my mom and dad always used to say that to me as well...except I think it started with "JUST" Who do you think you are...and usually ended with "talking to?". Of course, we become our parents as adults and found myself saying that to my son as he was growing up. Be sure and click on the link for THE VIEW over on the review page where you can see Meyers talk about her mom...thanks for following and entering!

Well - besides wanting to know what is in the box...I also want to know how the heck she lost her baby fat overnight. I've been trying to lose mine for over 50 years!

I follow - thanks.

And darn it all - I pressed post comment, on my last comment, and forgot to leave my email address!

I also would like to know what is in the box. I'm wondering if maybe she is adopted.
Memoirs are one of my favorite genres to read. I grew up in NJ, so this is close to home for me.

Wow - I'm horrible with surprises. I think I would have searched for that box as a child to open it and see what was inside it. And although I understand Alyse's hesitancy to open the box after her mother's death, I don't think I would've been able to wait. I would have needed to know. Just like I need to know now! I'm always amazed by women like Alyse - women who instead of blaming their childhood and becoming like the mother they've always despised use it as a model of what not to do and grow and succeed in spite of it. I'd love to read this book.

OK , I will say it - it was a good review :D but I wish I knew what was in the box of course that would be giving the ending away. I think a lot of children feel that way - that there is some mystery to their lives but maybe it was memories from her mother's or someone else instead in the box. Eventually we all have to let gt of our past and live our lives, it does sound like an interesting story though.

The book sounds great. I lost my Mom in February and just yesterday, my sister and I were at Mom's opening boxes. It was fun and sad at the same time. While I don't remember things being forbidden, we never went into mom's closet before. We found love letters that Dad had written her during WWII. The only problem is that all 4 siblings will fight over them!!

I don't think that parents give to much of themselves away when we are young, even as we get older. Who wouldn't love to have a box to look through and put the pieces together? It sounds like a wonderful read.

I really want to know what is in the box too- maybe its nothing but love inside but still your mind- ok my mind has so many thought as to what goes thru. I grew up the same time and feel like I could step back into the story...like others have said maybe it was someone else box, maybe puctures she drew, maybe letters of her ancestors- maybe soemthing so horrible she may wish she never opens it...ok you got my moind going and going...mrs.mommyyatgmaildotcom

Alyssa's mom is left a widow at the age of 33 with 3 young children to raise. It sounds like her marriage wasn't a happy one.

Now my curiosity is piqued! What's in the box? I also grew up in the 60's and so should be able to relate to this story. It sounds really good.

I'd have to open the box! Which is what I did in real life when I discovered I was adopted and searched out/found my birth family! It worked out very well for all concerned :)

I would love to read this book! I liked your honest review and you said it was a fast and easy read. I didn't know she was on The view. I wished I would have seen it. Books like this really touch my heart, because I grew up with some friends who's mother always mentally abused them. So they would come over my house as often as they could. thanks! jacquecurl1@gmail.com

I read your review and it made this book a must read for me! I too grew up in the 60's and would be able to identify with this book. I too wonder what is in the box. I just hope that whatever it is does not cause more pain for the daughter.

Thank you for letting us know about this book through your well written review and great giveaway!
