AN INTERVIEW WITH RANDA JARAR
Randa Jarar was nice enough to personally answer a few questions. Also, here is some more information about Randa.
Saints and Strangers by Angela Carter. She’s quickly becoming my favorite writer. Saints and Strangers is a collection of eight stories, each retelling the story of a historical female figure. She writes about Baudelaire’s African lover, axe murdered Lizzie Borden, Edgar Allen Poe’s mother, and retells Peter and the Wolf in a dizzyingly delicious way.
2. What gets you started on a new book? A character or story idea or….?
Usually a story idea that is strongly connected to an image, from which a character grows with her/his own distinct history and story.
3. What is your best advice to anyone, including young people, who want to be writers?
Keep writing! Don’t judge what you’ve written. Just keep going, and then, when you’re done, revise. I don’t think even your favorite writers came up with their books on a first draft.
