BEAR PORTRAITS
BY JILL GREENBERG

ABOUT THE BOOK:

A top celebrity portrait photographer, JillGreenberg has a unique ability to coax powerful emotions out of her subjects -whether human or animal. Her portraits of bears, collected here for the first time, surprise and engage. We encounter cubs as cute as a child's Teddy, grizzlies that look like they might swallow you whole, and Polar bears seated in Sphinx-like tranquility.

Full-grown brown bears, grizzlies, black bears, Polar bears, and bear cubs are photographed on location against a portrait backdrop. The poses and facial expressions are at turns oddly comedic, pensive, terrifying, and sometimes unexpectedly human. Alive with Greenberg's signature lighting and seen through the unique perspective of her lens, these startling bear portraits bring us face to face with our fears and fantasies.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Jill Greenberg regularly shoots advertising and celebrity portrait photography for such clients as Dreamworks, Sony Pictures, HBO, Bacardi, Rolling Stone, Time and Newsweek. She is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design and began her career in New York City. Jill now resides in Los Angeles with her husband Robert and children.

REVIEW:

I am sorry you can't win this one but I would say GO BUY IT! It is a great coffee table/photography book. The bears photos are amazing and resonate with all the emotions Jill Greenberg wanted to pull from them. They are cute, fierce, adorable, ferocious, and any other adjective you can think of for bear pictures. I think what I enjoyed just as much was the choice of captions that Greenberg chose for them. Her opening of "This is not your father's book of bears." should give you a clue as to where she is going. She uses quotes by other as well. For instance, I liked when she chose Woody Allen's quote, "I don't think my parents liked me. They put a live teddy bear in my crib!" In the back of the book she even credits all the different bears with names like Max, Agie, All Oops, Barney, Ursala, and many more. I know my husband, a huge nature lover, especially bears, will love this so am keeping my review copy hidden until his birthday next week. He will like it especially as there is little writing and lots of photographs. With Jill Greenberg's credentials and background, it is no wonder this is such a beautiful book. Well worth the price and something you will keep and share and look at over and over again as you are amused by the captions but more so at the majesty of these mighty animals!
