HUSH: REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY

GIVEAWAY ENDED
HUSH

BY KATE WHITE

ABOUT THE BOOK:

In this exciting thriller by Kate White, Cosmopolitan editor-in-chief and New York Times bestselling author of the Bailey Weggins mystery series (If Looks Could Kill, A Body to Die For, ’Til Death Do Us Part, Over Her Dead Body, Lethally Blond), a mother of two goes from ordinary New Yorker to victim and detective overnight. Readers of Laura Lippman and Iris Johansen are sure to find many page-turning thrills in Kate White's Hush.

New York Times bestselling author and Cosmopolitan's editor-in-chief returns with a sizzling, page-turning thriller in which an ordinary woman flees the scene of a murder—and realizes it's not just the law that's hunting her.

When Lake Warren learns that her husband, Jack, is suing for full custody of their two kids four months after their separation, she's pretty certain that things can't get any worse. The upside is that she's working with the Advanced Fertility Center as a marketing consultant, alongside the attractive, flirtatious Dr. Keaton. But the morning after their one-night stand, Lake finds Keaton with his throat slashed and discovers that things can indeed become worse—they can become deadly.

So as not to jeopardize her case for custody, Lake is forced to lie to the police. Having just been intimate with a man who has been murdered, and wanting to protect herself from being charged with the crime, she begins her own search for the truth. Meanwhile, the police start looking at her closely, people at the clinic start treating her with hostility, and strange clues begin dropping—quite literally—on her doorstep, and Lake realizes that she is dangerously close to dark secrets, both about Keaton and the clinic. But can Lake stop what she's started before it's too late?

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Kate White is recognized internationally as not only the veteran editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan, the bestselling women’s magazine in the world, but also as the critically acclaimed author of both fiction and nonfiction books. Few high-profile editors have successfully balanced the rigors of overseeing a major magazine title with a thriving and independent writing career.

It all began when Kate won Glamour magazine’s Top Ten College Women contest and appeared on the cover. Kate earned a position at the magazine and quickly rose from editorial assistant to feature writer and columnist. After holding key jobs at several national magazines, she became an editor-in-chief, running four magazines (including Redbook) before taking the helm at Cosmopolitan in 1998.

Drawing on experiences from her successful career, Kate published the bestselling career bibles Why Good Girls Don’t Get Ahead…but Gutsy Girls Do in 1995 and 9 Secrets of Women Who Get Everything They Want in 1998. Her most recent nonfiction book, You on Top: Smart Sexy Skills Every Woman Needs to Set the World on Fire was published in 2006.

But Kate also has a passion for writing fiction. In penning her first novel, If Looks Could Kill, in 2002—which was selected as Live With Regis and Kelly’s first Reading With Ripa Book Club pick—Kate introduced her gutsy and irreverent sleuth, Bailey Weggins. Ms. Weggins went on to solve more grisly murders and entertain readers in A Body to Die For (2003), ‘Til Death Do Us Part (2004), Over Her Dead Body (2005), and then again in Lethally Blond (2007), all New York Times bestsellers. These books were recently optioned by Lions Gate Pictures.

Kate’s highly anticipated first thriller, Hush, with her new publisher HarperCollins, will be available in bookstores March 2010. Hush marks Kate’s entry into a whole new genre. Set in the world of fertility clinics and hailed as a “pulse-pounding, chilling, and provocative” read, it’s the story of an ordinary woman who flees the scene of a murder and realizes it’s not just the law that is hunting her.

Kate’s writer’s eye has been described by the New York Times as “scathingly observant,” capturing “the mood…with a verisimilitude some of her peers might recognize.” The Los Angeles Times says of Kate’s work: “It’s like devouring a box of chocolates!”

Through her magazine work and books, Kate White has influenced at least two generations of women with her unique honesty, passion, and imagination. She is the winner of the Matrix Award for Outstanding Achievement in Communication, as well as the Woodhull Institute Award for Ethical Leadership.
Kate currently resides in Manhattan with her husband and two children.

REVIEW:

Kate White has not only done it again with HUSH, but she has written what I think is her best novel to date. HUSH centers on a very likable Lake Warren who is just one reason HUSH grabs you in the beginning and never lets go until the last page. Lake on the surface appears to be a well rounded, happy individual, living a very nice life…except that what is most important to her is in jeopardy, and what she does in the beginning of the novel, makes that even more of a concern. You see, Lake is separated from her husband Jack who is trying to get full custody of their children. Lake tries to carry on her normal life by doing her work at a Park Avenue fertility center as a Public Relations director. The clinic is very successful and has many loyal customers so Lake’s job is easy to handle.

All would seem to be in order until Lake accompanies one of the doctors home after a party. Dr. Keaton, a very attractive, especially to Lake, sexy and successful member of the clinic is just too good to turn down. She is separated and the kids are off at camp so why not have a little fun for herself for a change? Why not, you ask? Well, we all know where that can lead and it is to blissfully falling asleep after some fiery love-making only to wake in the morning and find that the doctor she was passionate with last night, is dead in his bed! Well, it isn’t THAT common but it certainly happened to poor Lake Warren.

Knowing she would be the prime suspect and not wanting to jeopardize the custody battle she is entangled in, she leaves quickly. Later in the morning the shocking news of Dr. Keaton comes out and police begin to investigate. What follows is a race against time and an unknown enemy as Lake tries on her own to find out who murdered Keaton. Very strange things begin to happen so she steps up her quest and Kit Archer, a popular reporter, enters her life and the investigation. Together they work through all the twists and turns a novel can handle with multiple suspects seeming to be THE ONE only to find out there may be someone even more suspect. It isn’t until the very end that the reader will find out who is involved and what will become of Kate and her children. HUSH is a suspenseful story that keeps you drawn in and caring up until the last few pages. If you like a good mystery with strong characters you really care about, then HUSH is a must-read for you!

I can't believe the titles F. Scott Fitzgerald might have chosen for The Great Gatsby. Unbelievable, that "t" word I've never seen in my life.

Well, I love the mystery plot. I did stop at the name Lake. I would have loved that name for my granddaughter. I've never heard of anyone named Lake.

I think it's very interesting how the doctor is dead in her bed. I don't think I have ever read a story about after a night together, someone dies in bed. Very interesting.
