AUTHOR INTERVIEW:

Susan Kearney was kind enough to answer a few questions for an interview. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did!

1. Susan, I wonder if there is a place where my readers can go to find out more information about you and your books? Perhaps a website of other information to share?the photo or tell me where to find one?)

2.What inspired you to write this new series, The Pendragon Legacy Series?

I love writing about the future but this time I wanted to incorporate elements from Earth’s history too. The King Arthur legends appealed to me and once I realized that King Arthur’s last name was Pendragon, I decided to also make my series about dragons. So I created an ancient enemy who had spent centuries building up their strengths to attack Earth and its allies. And then of course, we need gutsy women and brave men to defend Earth.

3. Do you have a favorite of the three-Lucan, Rion, Jordan?

Oh, a writer should never admit this. J But my favorite is JORDAN. I love the alpha hero who has lived for almost 2000 years and the sexy, intelligent self-made billioness who is more than a match for Jordan’s stubborn determination. I’ve always enjoyed writing larger than life characters, men who rise to the occasion. J And woman who enjoy matching wits with them. And Jordan and Vivianne are characters who must battle terrible odds. But the biggest battle is for their hearts.

4. Why do you writer futuristic romance?

The future has always appealed to me—because I can use my imagination in a very wide scope. What if aliens once came to Earth and we fought them off? What if they are about to return? What if we need an ancient secret to defend ourselves? And what if our DNA changes and we can morph into dragons? Sure it’s not likely but it is fun to think about and I do think lots of people agree. Look at the success of Avatar! Because no matter our shape, we’re still human. We have hopes and dreams and want to fall in love. But to frame a love story on another world and time is just interesting. How will new cultures affect how we fall in love? What human qualities will we value?

5. What made you write about dragons?

Big, powerful, sexy dragons have always fascinated me. Stories of them abound in many cultures. Hong Kong was founded by an emperor and dragons. The Vietnamese have a legend suggesting they came from the union of a fairy and a dragon. Besides even if dragons never existed, the idea of being able to morph into a creature who can fly just sounds . . . fascinating. And it creates interesting story questions. Would those who can’t shape shift fear those who can? Would social customs change? What about the power structure and society—how would it change if ten percent of the population could suddenly shape shift? Would such abilities be valued or looked down upon?

6. I heard you in an interview talk about a job you had at one time where you “set yourself on fire”. Is that something you might like to tell my readers about so they will know more about you?

I started competitive diving at age 9. I attended the University of Michigan and competed in Big Ten competitions and was a three-time All American. After graduation I performed in shows at amusement parts throughout the United States and Overseas. Part of the show is a fire dive. First, the diver dons a sweat suit over the swim suit. Next the diver jumps into the water soaking the sweat suit. Then one has to climb out of the pool—a really tough job because that wet sweat suit is damn heavy. Next the diver climbs thirty three feet to the ten meter platform. A towel soaked in gasoline is attached to the diver’s back in such a way that after the gas is lit and the diver dives from the platform, the ignited towel flames through the air. At night, it’s quite spectacular. Striking the water puts out the fire and then the diver must swim to the pool deck. Sometimes I reeked of gasoline. The entire dive is really quite safe—except for the occasional singed eyebrows.

7. All the writers I have interviewed seem to have a schedule of some kind for their writing. Do you have one and can you tell us about it?

My schedule is six pages a day six days a week. If those pages take me all day, then I sit at my desk all day. If I finish in an hour—I got play. J The exception is doing revisions, those I do in very long days until they are done. I don’t like interruptions at all when doing revisions since they require intense concentration.

8. Lastly, with the romances you write, and with just celebrating Valentine's Day, what would you consider the perfect Valentines' Day gift?

I’m really not into gifts. If I want something, I buy it. I’m more into romantic gestures--a kiss every morning before my husband leaves the house. Saying “I love you” before hanging up the phone. A shoulder rub. A smile across a room full of people that says “You’re special.”
