BY DIANNE DIXON
ABOUT THE BOOK:
From a fresh and exciting new voice in women's fiction, The Language of Secrets unflinchingly examines the lifelong repercussions of a father's betrayal.
Justin Fisher has a successful career as the manager of a luxury hotel, a lovely wife, and a charming young son. While all signs point to a bright future, Justin can no longer ignore the hole in his life left by his estranged family. When he finally gathers the courage to reconnect with his troubled past, Justin is devastated to learn that his parents have passed away. And a visit to the cemetery brings the greatest shock of all—next to the graves of his father and mother sits a smaller tombstone for a three-year-old boy: a boy named Thomas Justin Fisher. AUTHOR INTERVIEW
1. My first question is to find out about where the idea for this book came from?
And as the old saying goes—write what you know—my own family experience, my friend’s story, and an article by a Cornell Medical School professor about Dissociative Identity Disorder (a psychopathology related to severe, early childhood abuse and trauma—whose symptoms can include disturbances in both identity and memory) dovetailed to give me a story I’d been waiting to write. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT, FINISH READING "AUTHOR INTERVIEW" AT MY EARLIER POST TODAY HERE.
MY REVIEW:
Dianne Dixon’s first novel, THE LANGUAGE OF SECRETS, is a mesmerizing story that will surely keep you turning pages until the end of the story. Her background in screenwriting serves her well as she gives readers a story that would make a thrilling, as well as poignant, movie. In a book that deals with man’s imperfections and penalty for dishonesty, Justin Fisher learns all about this in a most shocking way. Returning to his hometown after being gone for years, he is traumatized to learn that his parents are dead, but it also seems, purportedly, so is he!
Upon learning of their death, Justin goes to his parents’ graves and finds a tombstone next to theirs bearing his name. It says that Justin Fisher died when he was three years old. How can this be? Justin soon finds that all he has known of his life is a lie. What was to be a short visit home to reunite with his parents and introduce his wife and son to them, turns out to be the start of a very unique, heartbreaking mystery to be solved. Dealing with only foggy memories of his young childhood, Justin has an almost impossible task ahead of him.
The story takes the reader back in time to find that Justin’s mother had relationships with three men when she was a college student. This liaison is one that sets in motion a course of events that will eventually be obviously life-altering for Justin. His father whose initial deception followed by his failure to deal with his wife’s betrayal leads to more shocking outcomes. Can Justin recover from these staggering revelations? Will he find a family he never knew existed and will they acknowledge him? How will he survive this and be able to rebuild his life when it has all been built on lies?
As one astonishing event after another comes to light, you dread what will happen next. Hoping that what you anticipate doesn’t happen, you read on only to be slammed by Dixon’s shocking conclusion! THE LANGUAGE OF SECRETS is probably one of the most unusual, captivating first novels I have read in a long while, if not possibly, ever! Great read to generate much discussion. I strongly recommend it for book clubs!

Wonderful review! I am so ready to read this book now! I find this story particularly intriguing because my mom did not see her father after she was about ten years old, when she made the choice to live with her mother exclusively when her parents divorced. Her father came over, took everything he ever gave her and left for good. I have never met my grandfather, but always wondered what my mother would find if she went looking for him again. It just shows you that you have no idea what you are opening when you dig back into the past. Fascinating concept, I would love to win a copy!
