MY REVIEW:

HANNAH’S LIST is touching story from Debbie Macomber who is one of the best when it comes to giving readers a satisfying and loving story filled with characters that one really cares about. This book is no different, although one that had my tissues out early on in the story. Readers meet the central character, Dr. Michael Everett, who is brokenhearted over the loss of his wife Hannah. It has been a year since Hannah died from ovarian cancer and her death nearly destroyed Michael along with all he lived for and their plans for a long future together. Knowing Michael so well and realizing that Michael would refuse to allow himself to let go of all they had, Hannah gives her brother and Michael’s best friend, Ritchie, a letter to hand to Michael on the first anniversary of her death. In her letter Hannah thanks Michael for all the happiness their relationship brought to her but pleads with him to now find someone new to share his life with. Knowing Michael would not respond to this eagerly or actively, she leaves him a list of women she truly feels he could be happy with and care for. Hannah had realized that Michael might consider eventually finding someone but probably never act on it and thus the reason she leaves the list.

The three women on Hannah’s list are interesting choices in various ways. Winter Adams is her cousin as well as her friend. She is the owner and head chef of the French Café on none other than Blossom Street. Winter had broken up with her boyfriend Pierre when Hannah wrote the letter. Since that time, Winter had tried it again with Pierre but was once again not seeing him since things hadn’t worked out.

One of Hannah's oncology nurses who she thought the world of, Leanne Lancaster, is also on the list. Once married, Leanne is now divorced from her husband who was an accountant that had gotten into some shady financial dealings with the hospital where Leanne actually works.

The third “candidate” is Macy Roth, who is an independent person that works as an artist, model, and actress. Macy was friends with Hannah but Michael didn't know about her. Macy is someone who is easy going and loves people and animals and has never been married.

Michael can’t ignore Hannah’s last wish, especially as Ritchie is there to keep after him, be Michael isn’t sure he is ready to date yet. Even so, over the next few months, Michael sees each of the women. Sometimes it is a planned “date” while other times they just run into each other. From each one, he learns something about himself and about different kinds of relations. Will one of Hannah‘s chosen three take to Michael and he in return find a new life with one of them?

Michael is a many layered character that takes time to get to know. In fact, all of the characters are ones that I found quite interesting, each with their own ‘baggage” and good and bad points, thus making them quite believable. In writing characters who experience a wide range of emotions, from dealing with the loss of a spouse to one’s expectations for a relationship, Debbie Macomber does not disappoint. Her observations of human nature and behaviors are what make her writing so appealing to so many. The setting, familiar to many, is appealing and even if you never read any of the Blossom Street series, you are fine as this is not necessary for this book. I hope you will read HANNAH’S LIST as well as some of the other wonderful books from the pen of Debbie Macomber. Reading Debbie’s books is like comfort food for the mind and heart, and it is always like coming home.
