THE AUTISM BOOK
What Every Parent Needs to Know About Early
Detection, Treatment, Recovery, and Preventions
BY ROBERT W. SEARS, MD, FAAP
ABOUT THE BOOK:
With clarity and compassion, Dr. Robert Sears guides the reader through the maze of autism, explaining what precautions parents can take to decrease their baby's risk, how to detect autism at the earliest possible age, and how to proceed once a diagnosis has been made. The book provides parents with a simple and clear understanding of the biomedical treatment approach that Dr. Sears has used successfully with many of his young patients. It lays out a plan for developmental, behavioral, and learning therapies; shows parents how to begin treatments without a doctor's help; presents information on vaccines and their safe use; and includes an extensive resources section.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Robert Sears is a board-certified pediatrician in private practice with his father, William Sears. He received his medical degree from Georgetown University and completed his pediatric training at Children's Hospital in Los Angeles. He is the author of The Vaccine Book and HappyBaby, and the co-author of The Baby Book (revised edition), The Premature Baby Book, and The Baby Sleep Book.
MY REVIEW:
Dr. Robert Sears has been a well known and well respected pediatrician since 1998 and offers his patients a combination of alternative and traditional medical care. He has written THE AUTISM BOOK in which he gives the facts on how research from the CDC shows that 1 out of 110 children are affected by autism and of that, 1 out of 70 are boys. He goes on to discuss how we don’t yet know the causes of autism but we do know many ways to try to treat it. Dr. Sears states that early detection and intervention is probably one of the most important things that can be done to help these children. He discusses the myriad of treatments available as well as giving his reasoning on why he favors one over another.
THE AUTISM BOOK is divided into four main parts: Diagnosing Autism, Causes of Autism, Treating Autism, and Preventing Autism. Each of those sections is divided into overviews and steps a parent can take if they believe their child might be autistic and/or would benefit from the advice. It is written in an easy to understand way and you do not have to have a medical degree to understand what Dr. Sears writes.
Not a medical person myself, I would never begin to recommend or not recommend this book from a medical standpoint. My only connection is that I have taught children in the autism spectrum over the past few years and so have that kind of contact and experience with the children and the parents and what they have to go through. I can say, however, that Dr. Sears book is organized and easy to comprehend and if you are just trying to learn all you can on the subject, it would be a good start, leaving you then with a vast amount of resources to continue your study of this devastating disorder. Dr. Sears includes a great number of resources that anyone can use and look into.

I find it interesting that you have taught children with autism, because I also have been working with children who have autism. I am going to school so that I can teach children with special needs.

This comprehensive book contains invaluable help and would be a great resource. saubleb(at)gmail(dot)com
I read about the book and it sounds like it could help my sister in law. I have a nephew that once he started school they had him tested. I hear he has a mild form of autism. I'd like to win the book for her.

I think this would be very interesting and great for me to read. Although not a parent, I do teach children with autism who also have psychiatric disorders. I think it would be a good insight for me.

I didn't even realize there was a way to prevent Autism. I'd love to read this then pass it on to my daughter inlaw whose son was diagnosised with a form of Autism.
