THE CAPITOL GAME: REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY

GIVEAWAY ENDED
THE CAPITOL GAME

BY BRIAN HAIG

ABOUT THE BOOK:

New York Times bestselling author Brian Haig returns with a riveting new thriller about a man caught between the politics of big government and the corruption of big business.

The Capitol Game

It was the deal of the decade, if not the century. A small, insignificant company on the edge of bankruptcy had discovered an alchemist's dream; a miraculous polymer, that when coated on any vehicle, was the equivalent of 30 inches of steel. With bloody conflicts surging in Iraq and Afghanistan, the polymer promises to save thousands of lives and change the course of both wars. Jack Wiley, a successful Wall Street banker, believes he has a found a dream come true when he mysteriously learns of this miraculous polymer. His plan: enlist the help of the Capitol Group, one of the country's largest and most powerful corporations in a quick, bloodless takeover of the small company that developed the polymer. It seems like a partnership made in heaven...until the Pentagon's investigative service begins nosing around, and the deal turns into a nightmare. Now, Jack's back is up against the wall and he and the Capitol Group find themselves embroiled in the greatest scandal the government and corporate America have ever seen...
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

BRIAN HAIG is a West Point graduate and a career infantry officer and military strategist. He served as special assistant to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and currently runs International Business Communications. His articles have been published in journals ranging from the New York Times to USA Today to the Harvard Journal. The son of former Secretary of State Alexander Haig, he lives in New Jersey with his wife and four children.

MY REVIEW:

Brian Haig has created a new boy in town with Jack Wiley in THE CAPITOL GAME and one can only hope that this will be the start of many more Jack Wiley books by Haig. This thriller moves along and before you know it, the day (or night) is gone and yet you read on! The opening of the book seems to set the tone for the relevancy of this book as if it were torn from today’s headlines. It tells of a U.S. soldier in Iraq being killed by an IED while driving in his unarmored patrol vehicle.

With the US at war in both Iraq and Afghanistan, a revolutionary invention comes along that has possibilities of not only saving lives, but also of making a great deal of money for the company who will sell it to the government. Jack Wiley is a banker and master at takeovers on Wall Street and when this invention and its potential become known to him, Wiley gets involved. The invention is a like a paint that can be applied to vehicles and allow them to function as if they are made of steel that is about thirty inches thick and the company that invented this is a small jewel ripe for the picking.

Wiley believes that a takeover of the small company who made this amazing product will be trouble-free. In need of a partner that can navigate this product through the military red tape at the Pentagon, Wiley joins forces with one of the most powerful companies in the country, the Capitol Group. The Capitol Group is not only one of the largest corporations in the world, but also experienced at this sort of endeavor. Once the Capitol Group joins in, they are able to easily procure the company and move on to do what ever is necessary in order to move the product through government procedures. However, the Capitol Group plays a rougher game than Jack is aware of as they have no qualms about employing abusive tactics, corruption, and intimidation to get the government to buy into this deal. Just when Wiley thinks he can breathe easier and that his idea was a good one and handled well, the government begins an investigation into this deal and it is game on!

Mia Jensen, a special military agent, heads the inquiry into whether the deal was legal or not. She zeros in on the Capitol Group, the head of the company, and of course, Jack Wiley is more than involved, with Jensen in it to win it. Wiley leaves readers wondering just how much of a part he really played in the underhanded and illegal aspects of what turns out to be the biggest disgrace in American business and government dealings ever authorized.

Thanks to Brian Haig’s well-defined, believable characters, brilliant tempo, and spellbinding, timely plot, THE CAPITOL GAME involves all the players, including the reader, in trying to figure out who the ultimate winner and loser will be in the end. The result may leave you wanting to go back and reread this book to try and figure out the rules of THE CAPITOL GAME that led to the unexpected ending.

Brian Haig spent 22 years on active duty before retiring as a lieutenant colonel in 1997 and going into private business. He sounds very qualified to write about this topic. I haven't read any of his books before, but they sound interesting.
