GIVEAWAY EXTENDED TO OCTOBER 1!
How a Sister's Love Launched the
Global Movement to End Breast Cancer
BY NANCY G. BRINKER
ABOUT THE BOOK:
Growing up, Nancy and her sister Suzy were inseparable, with the elegant, socially poised Suzy serving as younger sister Nancy's best friend and role model. Then in 1977, at the age of thirty-four, Suzy was stricken with breast cancer. Three years later, having endured an uninformed doctor, surgeries that left her feeling mutilated and stripped of her sexuality, and fighting through several grueling courses of chemotherapy and radiation, Susan G. Komen lay dying. Toward the end, she begged her sister to do something, anything, to make sure that other women with breast cancer would not have to suffer as she had from the ravages of this disease.

"Promise me, Nanny," she said. "Promise me you won’t let it go on like this."
Her heart broken, Nancy promised: "I swear, Suzy. Even if it takes the rest of my life."
At that moment, Susan G. Komen for the Cure was born.

THE PROMISE ME/FOR MY SISTER CAMPAIGN:
Promise Me is the story of how that vow launched Nancy on a thirty-year-long mission to change the way the world thought of, spoke of, and treated breast cancer. Brinker’s unparalleled success at turning $200 and a list of would-be donors into a movement that has saved the lives of millions of women was recognized by President Obama in August 2009, when he awarded Brinker the Presidential Medal of Freedom. "In the months after making that promise," the President noted, "Nancy lay awake at night wondering if one person can really make a difference. Nancy's life is the answer."By sharing Promise Me with your own sister or your loved one, together you can join the global movement to end breast cancer.

Thanks for hosting - I had not heard of this book before and am so glad I do now. My sister's mother-in-law just had surgery (3 weeks ago)and is recovering from surgery for two separate kinds of breast cancer. I have been made more aware than ever before as my sister and I chat while she tends to her mother-in-law. I hope that I will win this book, that way I when I buy 2 more I will have one for each of us! Your timing for this giveaway is truly amazing. Please enter me. Thanks. bsharp88@gmail.com
I have heard the name and the campaigns over and over. I never heard the story behind it. I would like to read it. Cancer has hit my family hard. I think it would be good for me to read this book.

My aunt was diagnosed with breast cancer about a year ago and is now in remission. I thank god for that everyday but am very aware that not everyone is able to survive and thrive this horrible disease. I have heard the name and the movement over and over but have never known where it started. I would love to win this book for my aunt so we can learn and share together.
Thanks,

I went to the Promise Me website and learned that Suzy, the woman who inspired the whole movement, was stricken with breast cancer when she was only 34! I had no idea she was so young.
Thanks,

I have heard of this book before, but your post was a good reminder for me because I had temporarily forgotten about it. I would love to be entered to win!

I'd like to read the story behind the Susan G Komen Foundation and Race for the Cure. My family has been lucky so far and not had breast cancer until age 90.

Nancy Brinker was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Obama last August.

I also have heard the name and campaigns but never knew the story. It sounds very interesting. I have lost 2 friends to breast cancer and would love to read this.

I don't know anyone who has not had their lives touched in some way by cancer. I have family members and close friends I have lost to cancer as well as it being breast cancer. This is the one charity I give to no matter what my financial situation is. Thanks for letting me enter.

I ordered a book to give to my cousin who is a survivor and the other will be sent to a dear friend currently battling it. I found out that President Barack Obama honored her with the Presidential Medal of Freedom by going to the site.

I have one cousin who passes away from breast cancer and another who has invasive breast cancer. When I lived in California, I had my annual mammograms at the Susan G. Komen Breast Center. I never knew the story behind the name. That is the reason why I would like to read this book.

It has been 30 years since Nancy promised her sister, Susan to fight this horrible disease. My son's classmate died from breast cancer at the age of 17! I hope that the money raised will soon obliterate this horrible disease.

I have several friends who have beaten breast cancer. Right now my hubby is going through his own battle with cancer, and while it's not breast, it's still an uphill trial.

I would be very interested in reading about her mission to promote breast cancer awareness.

I am a cancer survivor. I also admire the close sister relationship...something I do not have. Cherishing... joleehamlin [at] comcast [dot] net
Learned that the book is available as an ebook too at their site. joleehamlin [at] comcast [dot] net
I have followed this story for years. I have had too many friends who have been dealt the blow of breast cancer but fortunately have been survivors.

North Carolina State University lost a great coach-Kay Yow-due to breast cancer. She was a great role model for all women. Promise Me is the story of how that vow launched Nancy on a thirty-year-long mission to change the way the world thought of, spoke of, and treated breast cancer. That's why I would love to win this book for my library in Oxford NC, so that many people can read this book.

Let me wipe away the tears first. I have heard this name and organization before but one thing I was not aware of is that "Suzy's" cancer may have progressed farther than it should have due to a "misinformed" doctor. How sad, I know so many women who have had to endure this type of cancer and this book (after reading it) I could pass on to them.

After visiting the Promise Me campaign website I sadly learned that the author will not be doing a book signing near where I live. It was cool to see who endorse/reviewed the book: Dr Oz. and Laura Bush.

I'd love to read this because I've always wondered about Susan G. Komen.

This book sounds interesting to me because 1 1/2 years ago, my GYN found a lump on my breast. I was scared to death. After a few tests, it turned out to be nothing but I have done my share ever since to help raise money for the Cure.

I find it interesting that you can share excerpts from the book with friends.
This is for such a great cause.

In 1977 when her sister was diagnosed with breast cancer nobody talked about breast and cancer in the same sentence!
