ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
The bestselling author of Labor Day returns with a spellbinding novel about friendship, family secrets, and the strange twists of fate that shape our lives.
They were born on the same day, in the same small New Hampshire hospital, into families that could hardly have been less alike.
Ruth Plank is an artist and a romantic with a rich, passionate, imaginative life. The last of five girls born to a gentle, caring farmer and his stolid wife, she yearns to soar beyond the confines of the land that has been her family's birthright for generations.
Dana Dickerson is a scientist and realist whose faith is firmly planted in the natural world. Raised by a pair of capricious drifters who waste their lives on failed dreams, she longs for stability and rootedness.
Different in nearly every way, Ruth and Dana share a need to make sense of who they are and to find their places in a world in which neither has ever truly felt she belonged. They also share a love for Dana's wild and beautiful older brother, Ray, who will leave an indelible mark on both their hearts.
Told in the alternating voices of Ruth and Dana, The Good Daughters follows these "birthday sisters" as they make their way from the 1950s to the present. Master storyteller Joyce Maynard chronicles the unlikely ways the two women's lives parallel and intersect—from childhood and adolescence to first loves, first sex, marriage, and parenthood; from the deaths of parents to divorce, the loss of home, and the loss of a beloved partner—until past secrets and forgotten memories unexpectedly come to light, forcing them to reevaluate themselves and each other.
Moving from rural New Hampshire to a remote island in British Columbia to the '70s Boston art-school scene, The Good Daughters is an unforgettable story about the ties of home and family, the devastating force of love, the healing power of forgiveness, and the desire to know who we are.

this sounds rather interesting... How your life can start off the same and then, whether forced by choice, the paths are always changing but seem to be invisibly overlapped and intertwined...
I am interesting in the idea of following the birthday sisters. When my son was born, there was another Justin born on the same day, two baby beds over. I was working at the same cdompany as the other Justin's mother so we discussed our Justins on break. But we moved away and I don't know what became of the other Justin. At least in this book, it is possible to know about the lives of both birthday sisters.

From the fun stuff, I learned that Joyce Maynard would have been a country singer if she could sing!

Yesss! This one is on my TBR list! I'd love to read it because it's so cool that they were born on the same day, and I love stories that take place over a long period of time.

On the site, I saw that her favorite food is popcorn!
My wife is an artist so this book being about an artist interests me. Thanks for the opportunity.

Hi! I think I would enjoy this novel because it involves sisters. Each sister has a different personality which will really make the story line interesting. :)

I find this book so appealing and wonderful. thanks. saubleb(at)gmail(dot)com
This talented author writes so well and such uniqur novels. saubleb(at)gmail(dot)com
I find the same birthday idea interesting. When I was born, my mother shared a room with a woman who had a daughter on the same day. She had a famous ranch, that raised horses for rodeos. I have loved and raised many horses. I am the only person in my family interested in them. My joke has always been, that I was switched at birth.
I would love to read this book.

Least favorite food...liver. Too bad she hasn't ever tried it, though. It really is good if cooked properly.

Family means everything to me, so I would really like to see what happens with them.

I just finished Labor Day yesterday and LOVED it. As in, had to write my review immediately after I finished and am still thinking about that novel. I really want to read more of her work, and this one sounds fantastic.

JOYCE MAYNARD books are great reads. She mentions my favorite artist Dolly Parton and draws inspriation from Dolly for her shamelessness, great writing, total originality, sense of humor, and heart.
I would love to read The Good Daughters.
rbooth43(at)yahoo(dot)com
I love Joyce Maynard and all the books of hers I've read so far. Based on the description of this book it appears this one will be just as great. I love storylines that span across several decades and when there are two seperate narrators it feels like you get to read two books in one.

I learned that Joyce Maynards favorite place is Lake Atitlan in Guatemala where she owns a home

I really like stories that are told in alternating voices. They add more depth and understanding to a story. I think i would really enjoy this book.

I would like to win this book because I think Joyce Maynard is an extremely talented writer with an extraordinary body of work. I enjoy her characters, settings and storylines and love the way she writes. I am captivated by this story about these two females who are as close as sisters but are not related, as the author calls them, Birthday sisters, with very different back grounds.
Aimala127 AT gmail DOT com
Joyce Maynard is a fan of Leonard Cohen and recently she readi "Time Will Darken It" by William Maxwell, a book from the 1940's that, while reading it, she didn't want to end.
I would love to read this book because I read Labor Day and fell in love with Joyce Maynard's writing. Labor Day is still in my top 5 recommended books from the past few years.
