MY LOST DAUGHTER
BY NANCY TAYLOR ROSENBERG
ABOUT THE BOOK:
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
NANCY TAYLOR ROSENBERG spent fourteen years in law enforcement, including affiliations with the Dallas Police Department, the New Mexico State Police, the Ventura Police, and the Ventura County Probation Department, where she was a superior court investigator. Her first novel, Mitigating Circumstances, quickly became a New York Times bestseller, as have Rosenberg’s subsequent novels, including Interest of Justice, First Offense, and Buried Evidence.
MY REVIEW:
Fans of Judge Lily Forrester in Nancy Taylor Rosenberg’s popular book, THE CHEATER, will be thrilled to find her back again in Rosenberg’s latest installment, MY LOST DAUGHTER. As this was my first of these books, I will say it stood alone quite well as I never felt like there was something left out that I needed to know from the first book. Instead, I felt like there was almost too much for me to wrap my brain around in this heart-stopping thriller. Actually, when the story flashed back to earlier times in the Judge’s life, I believe it gave me what I needed to know about quite sufficiently. MY LOST DAUGHTER also started with a chilling murder (or was it "mercy killing"?) in the Prologue which was woven into the story and came into play a little later in the book.
The characters were well developed and realistic, complete with their good points as well as their imperfections. With Lily Forrester’s daughter Shana only months away from graduating from college, she begins to have some emotional problems and talks about dropping out. This is the last thing that the judge needs to hear as she is in the middle of a very important trial. The case in her court seems to come straight from recent horrific headlines in which a woman tormented and tortured and then killed her own child, a helpless little two-year-old son. Judge Forrester is dedicated to seeing justice done in this one. However, when she is informed of Shana’s bizarre actions, and that she isn’t going to class, something has to be done as Lily fears her daughter may be headed for a major breakdown.
Racing to Shana’s school, the Judge decides it would be a good idea to have Shana evaluated as well as buy herself some time to get finished with this case. By then, probably after some counseling and possibly some medication, the trial will be over, and Lily can concentrate fully on her daughter’s recovery and care. So when Judge Forrester leaves her daughter at Whitehall Psychiatric Hospital, she thinks Shana will have some tests run and they can go from there. However, Whitehall is more interested in charging enormous fees in order to get money from insurance companies and unsuspecting patients and their families than in caring for their patients properly. Little does Judge Forrester know that Shana is being kept there against her will. She does finally find out that Shana is being psychologically abused and given mind altering drugs as well as being locked in a padded cell with no food or water for long periods of time. What Shana experiences there is nothing short of living your worst nightmare and being unable to wake up. To top it off and to bring into play another storyline, Shana becomes the target of an unstable, demented stalker--a psychopath who is right there in the "hospital".
With several story lines seeming to converge, and a great deal of edge-of-your-seat twists in this story, I was compelled to keep reading to find out what would happen. Would Shana get out of this torture chamber safely? Would Lily Forrester finally realize what was going on in time to save her daughter? What of the mysterious stranger portrayed in the Prologue who seemed to be carrying out a supposed mercy killing? Would he play a part in Shana’s chance to escape unharmed? With her expert narrative, Rosenberg keeps the reader breathless up until the end…and beyond! I have to admit, I never saw the ending coming in this one. I think I would like to read more Nancy Taylor Rosenberg’s work, once I have time to catch my breath from this one.
Following her success withThe Cheater, Nancy Taylor Rosenberg returns to her most memorable character, Lily Forrester. Lily is a tough judge in Ventura County, California, who has overcome adversity and heartache to achieve a position of power to help those who can’t help themselves. Like the current case before her, the sensational murder trial of a woman who tortured and killed her beautiful two-year old son. Lily is determined to see justice done but she’s thrown for a loop when she receives word that her own daughter, Shana, months away from graduating from Stanford Law School, is on the verge of dropping out. Lily rushes north and what she discovers causes her to fear for her daughter’s mental state. She must get back to the trial and decides that she will take Shana to a facility where they can evaluate her and if needed give her some counseling or medication.
Which is when things go horribly awry. For the institution that Lily has chosen is far less interested in treating patients than it is with bilking the insurance companies out of extravagant fees…and they are less than scrupulous about patient’s rights. Discovering the awful truth, Lily will have to summon all her intelligence and street smarts to find a way to free Shana. She will have to work fast however, for there is someone at the facility who seems to have his own agenda separate from the institution. And Lily’s daughter may not only be in danger of losing her sanity but her life.

Although I have several of her early works in my bookcase, I don't think I have read any yet.
First Offense sounds like a good starting place.

I love stories based on the mental health field, especially ones that are a little eery, as my degree is in Psychology and it just fascinates me! This book sounds like it would keep you on your toes!
Thanks,

I found out from the author's website that she worked for years in the judicial system before becoming a writer of books based on this genre. This is good to know as she is probably very knowledgeable about what she writes.

I want to read this book because I cannot think of very much besides trying to save your child that would be so moltivating. That struggle must add excitment and suspense to this book.
CarolNWong(at)aol(dot)com
The author had so much experience is investigation, including 14 years law enforcement. Her background would make the details and methods in this book so authenic.

I would like to win this one because it seems like a really jam packed thriller, with lots of action. And I always wonder what happens in those types of places you hear all kinds of gruesome tales.

The story brings to light that tragedy can hit anyone at anytime and the scariest is the unbelievable abuse in a hospital where people are supposed to be helped! It sounds like a very good book and another first for this author. Thanks for the chance to win this exciting new book.

The fact that the author has so much real life experience in the world she writes about has to be a trmrndous help to make the books believable and interesting. I have not read any of hers as yet but, they all look good especially California Angel, is it?

Something similar to this book just happened. A man, devastated by his mother's diagnosis, shot her doctor at the world-renowned Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore before allegedly killing her and taking his own life.
I would love to win MY LOST DAUGHTER BY NANCY TAYLOR ROSENBERG.

I have read Nancy Taylor Rosenberg many years ago. I love that I can reconnect with a forgotten author.
I love the premise of this book and that there are so many balls in the air you gotta keep reading to find out the outcome.

I read "Abuse of Power" by Ms Rosenberg many years ago when I was a police officer prior to retiring. After reading that book I felt compelled to write her and I received a reply from her. I felt fortunate that being a female P.O. in 1978 I was not subjected to the treatment suffered by the main character. I just had to know if she took that from real or just imagined events.
Love & Hugs,
