TESTIMONY: A GIVEAWAY FOR YOU!

GIVEAWAY
TESTIMONY

BY ANITA SHREVE

ABOUT THE BOOK:

A sex scandal at a New England boarding school unleashes a storm of shame and recrimination throughout the small community. A chorus of voices--those of the men, women, and teenagers involved--details the events of that night and their aftermath. Writing with a pace and intensity surpassing even her own greatest work, Anita Shreve brings us a gripping emotional drama with the impact of a thriller. No one more compellingly explores the impulses that drive ordinary people into intolerable dilemmas, or the ways in which lives can be derailed or destroyed in one foolish moment.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

ANITA SHREVE began writing fiction while working as a high school teacher. Although one of her first published stories, "Past the Island, Drifting," was awarded an O. Henry Prize in 1975, Shreve felt she couldn't make a living as a fiction writer so she became a journalist. She traveled to Africa, and spent three years in Kenya, writing articles that appeared in magazines such as Quest, US, and Newsweek. Back in the United States, she turned to raising her children and writing freelance articles for magazines. Shreve later expanded two of these articles — both published in the New York Times Magazine — into the nonfiction books Remaking Motherhood and Women Together, Women Alone. At the same time Shreve also began working on her first novel, Eden Close. With its publication in 1989, she gave up journalism for writing fiction full time, thrilled, as she says, with "the rush of freedom that I could make it up."

Since Eden Close Anita Shreve has written eleven other novels: Strange Fits of Passion, Where or When, Resistance, The Weight of Water, The Pilot's Wife, Fortune's Rocks, The Last Time They Met, Sea Glass, All He Ever Wanted, Light on Snow, A Wedding in December and, most recently, Body Surfing. In 1998 Shreve received the PEN/L. L. Winship Award and the New England Book Award for fiction.

PRAISE FOR THE BOOK:

Back in October of 2008, Anita Shreve's novel, TESTIMONY, was published. It is the bestseller about a scandal at an exclusive private school that unleashes a storm of shame and recrimination throughout the small community.

TESTIMONY that has been widely praised as one of Shreve's most compulsively readable works of fiction is just out this week in the mass market paperback edition, and I get to offer my followers a chance at a 5-copy giveaway.

Cosmopolitan's John Searles recommended Anita Shreve's TESTIMONY on the Weekend Today Show "Great Fall Books" segment, saying that it has a narrative pace of a thriller "that would shock even the folks over at Gossip Girl."

"Shreve arrows in on many targets…as she flawlessly weaves a tale that is mesmerizing, hypnotic, and compulsive. No one walks away unscathed, and that includes the reader." —Library Journal (STARRED review) "Shreve's novels benefit from propulsive plots, and [TESTIMONY] does not lack in this regard. Her character delineation is astute and the novel's moral questions…are salient. The novel is clever." —Publishers Weekly

I am always interested in thrillers and with this book being characterized as a being a border line thriller sounds interesting. I am amazed how all walks of life are being riddled with sex scandals. The rich "Tiger Woods" ... politicians after politicians ... and it has even pervaded our churches. It's no wonder that there are many books that have been written about sexual scandals. I doubt that this book would be one that I would like to read so I am not throwing my name into the hat, but I did want to comment on this subject.

I adore Anita Shreve's novels. I've read Eden Close. I can only remember loving that book. I would like to read Testimony because of the many voices speaking out about one particular night. Surely, each person will see that night differently. I would like to read and hear the different thoughts.

I would love to read this book. I love Anita Shreve's books. I love books set in New England and especially those that deal with close knit communities or boarding schools.

The idea of a New England boarding school for the setting of this novel is intriguing. Though very different, I'm sure, it reminds me of a popular YA novel, A Separate Peace, much talked about when I was a HS librarian several decades ago. Thanks for the giveaway.

I went to the Anita Shreve web site and in looking at the covers of her novels, I clicked on The Last Time They Met, strictly because the cover and the title appealed to me. And then it turns out that the main characters are named Linda (that's also my name) and Thomas (the name of my late husband) - what a coincidence. I'd love to read that book.

I found it interesting that Anita says she had many many rejections for her short stories. The message here is keep trying. We all need to hear that.

It is interesting to me that Anita Shreve wrote a check for the cost of the book when a woman complained to her that she did not like the ending!

I too found it interesting that 'The Pilot's Wife' was on Opra's Book Club. And, I would love to read 'The Weight of Water' I missed the movie and the name has pigued my interest as well as the pics she had on the website.
