MY REVIEW:

WICKED APPETITE is a gift to fans of Janet Evanovich and a very special present for me. It is the first in a highly anticipated new series from Evanovich known as the Unmentionable Series and comes at just the right time for me. I can now be added to the scores of Janet Evanovich’s fans for I have not read her books before. WHAT? I know that seems impossible even to me! For some reason, perhaps because I missed the first few “numbers” and thought it was too late to catch up, and I didn’t realize there was a “Between-the-Numbers” group of special books from Janet Evanovich that could have gotten me started sooner, I just missed out. However, it is never too late and with WICKED APPETITE, I am along from the start while in turn, I go back and proceed with "the numbers" and Stephanie Plum.

In WICKED APPETITE, readers/listeners will delight in getting to know Lizzie Tucker who inherited her rather unconventional Great Aunt Ophelia’s home in the grand area called Marblehead in Massachusetts. Having recently been in Marblehead, I know how different this area is in comparison to New York City where Lizzie moved from, but she is resourceful and uses her exceptional gift as a pastry chef to work at Dazzle’s Bakery in nearby Salem. One of the many talents that Lizzie possesses, (some that she doesn’t even know about as yet), is her culinary expertise for creating the hottest trend in baking, that of cupcakes.

The story shifts quickly into high gear when two men come into Lizzie’s life, both with their own agendas concerning Lizzie. Diesel, who long time Stephanie Plum readers will remember, arrives to let Lizzie know that she has other talents besides baking, and why he needs her help. As Diesel explains to Lizzie, being an Unmentionable Being endows one with certain powers. His is to locate people just as he has found her, and Lizzie has the ability to find empowered objects. There is a collection of stones, called the SALIGIA Stones, that are known to now be in the Marblehead area. These stones are special because each one possesses a power of one of the Seven Deadly Sins. Diesel wants to find these stones before Gerewulf Grimoire, known as Wulf, comes along and finds them. Wulf, who happens to be Diesel’s cousin, is indeed the second of the two men to come into Lizzie’s world and turn things upside down around about the same time.

Wulf also wants Lizzie because he needs her special gift of knowledge to locate the stones as well. However, Wulf’s reason for wanting them is because of what their power, when grouped together, can do. They have the ability to create Hell on Earth and that is exactly what this villain wants to do. Imagine unleashing those Seven Deadly Sins as if we don’t already have enough trouble going on in this world! With Wulf wanting these stones and Diesel wanting to stop him, the answer to all of this lies with Lizzie.

When Lizzie and Diesel work together to find the Gluttony stone that Wulf especially wants and is hunting for, sparks fly in more ways than one. It seems that Gluttony has broken into several pieces and each was given to different members of a certain family. As they race to find each of the parts of Gluttony, they also race to keep up with Wulf who is always a jump ahead of them. There is loads of action, and romance is also part of this entertaining story. I can personally attest to the fact that if you haven’t listened to a Janet Evanovich book before, you are in for a treat. I enjoyed the interaction and electricity between Lizzie and Diesel, but must admit the mysteriously evil yet captivating bad boy Wulf, may be the one to watch.

The characters created by Evanovich are brought to life by the talented narration of Lorelei King, familiar voice of several of Janet Evanovich’s audio books. My recent interest in audio books stems from my love of reading a good story. I find that audio books allow me to relax, especially my tired eyes, and I can often do something else while listening. I enjoy audio books so much now, that it is the reason for my starting my “blog” makeover with special interest genres and types of books. That, along with my new found interest in all things Evanovich, makes this first “ARE YOU LISTENING? FRIDAY” audio book choice, a very special premier for my blog and I hope you will think so too.

I find it very interesting that you have never read the Stephanie Plum series. You are missing out the antics of Stephanie and her family are hilarious. I have read most of the Stephanie Plum books with the exception of the hardcovers because it is such a quick read I never buy them I wait for the paperbacks to come out.

I like that Lizzie is a pastry chef. I have read another mystery recently where one of the main characters was a pastry chef
and that one often had my motuh watering so for that reason and the fact that I love her books, I want to read this one.
