Praise for Freedom
“Writing in prose that is at once visceral and lapidary, Mr. Franzen shows us how his characters strive to navigate a world of technological gadgetry and ever-shifting mores, how they struggle to balance the equation between their expectations of life and dull reality, their political ideals and mercenary personal urges. He proves himself as adept at adolescent comedy as he is at grown-up tragedy; as skilled at holding a mirror to the world his people inhabit day by dreary day as he is at limning their messy inner lives . . . Mr. Franzen has written his most deeply felt novel yet—a novel that turns out to be both a compelling biography of a dysfunctional family and an indelible portrait of our times.” —Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times
“[Freedom is] a work of total genius: a reminder both of why everyone got so excited about Franzen in the first place and of the undeniable magic—even today, in our digital end-times—of the old-timey literary novel . . . Few modern novelists rival Franzen in that primal skill of creating life, of tricking us into believing that a text-generated set of neural patterns, a purely abstract mind-event, is in fact a tangible human being that we can love, pity, hate, admire, and possibly even run into someday at the grocery store. His characters are so densely rendered—their mental lives sketched right down to the smallest cognitive micrograins—that they manage to bust through the art-reality threshold: They hit us in the same place that our friends and neighbors and classmates and lovers do. This is what makes Franzen’s books such special event.” —Sam Anderson, New York Magazine
“The Great American Novel.” —Esquire
“Epic.” —Vanity Fair

I want to read Freedom for a couple of reasons. I always like Oprah's picks when they are fiction choices and I also want to read it because it just really sounds like a good book. Plus, I love audio books, to listen to around the house, in the car and such.
Please enter me in the giveaway.

I always think Franzen's books sound interesting and I'm always up to diving into a good "disfunctional family" novel. I think this book would be a lot easier for me to listen to.

So, commenting on your review, I think it's very apparent that Franzen sure knows how to write a character driven story! I think your comments about Patty and Walter both make them seem very interesting. Thanks!
JHolden955(at)gmail(dot)com
In your review I find it fun and interesting that the character Walter Berglund reminds you of several men you know. Whenever that is true for me in a book it really gets me to respect the characterization, because people are so complex, and some authors just get it!

I absolutely would love to win this audio book! Your review is only one of many reviews that I have read of this amazing book. I first found out about this book through Oprah's Book Blog and each time I read a review I am even more sure that this book will become a book that I read ... now I have my finger crossed that I might win the audio version of this book. Thanks so much for hosting this review and also the contest. BTW 25 hours isn't to long as long as the book is GOOD!
Thanks again.
steven(dot)capell(at)gmail(dot)com
Your entire lengthy review was extremely well done, especially concerning the major characters and their relationships. It sounds fascinating to read about this family and their lives. rojosho(at)hotmail(dot)com
Patty and Walter as well as Richard Katz sound typical although it would be an absorbing book to read. thanks. saubleb(at)gmail(dot)com
I've been reading a lot of mixed reviews about this book. Everyone seems to agree that the characters are not that likable. I'm glad to see that you liked the book on the whole though even if the characters weren't so endearing.
akreese (at) hotmail (dot) com
I would like to have this because the people seem so narcissitic, they remind me of my own family.

I entered the quickie giveaway, I am comment number 20.
twoofakind12@yahoo.com
I just read your review. It strikes me that they each want love, but don't really know how to love. They can't see anything beyond their own needs, and to be able to love, you have to put someone else first, sometimes.I thought your review was honest, I think in places it would be hard to read, because sometimes those characters would be very unlikeable.
twoofakind12@yahoo.com
I like how the characters are developed dome to the "smallest cognitive micrograins." I like characters that I can really "get into" Sounds like this book does just that!
