THE CONFESSION
THE CONFESSION
BY JOHN GRISHAM
ABOUT THE BOOK:
An innocent man is about to be executed.
Only a guilty man can save him.
For every innocent man sent to prison, there is a guilty one left on the outside. He doesn’t understand how the police and prosecutors got the wrong man, and he certainly doesn’t care. He just can’t believe his good luck. Time passes and he realizes that the mistake will not be corrected: the authorities believe in their case and are determined to get a conviction. He may even watch the trial of the person wrongly accused of his crime. He is relieved when the verdict is guilty. He laughs when the police and prosecutors congratulate themselves. He is content to allow an innocent person to go to prison, to serve hard time, even to be executed.
Travis Boyette is such a man. In 1998, in the small East Texas city of Sloan, he abducted, raped, and strangled a popular high school cheerleader. He buried her body so that it would never be found, then watched in amazement as police and prosecutors arrested and convicted Donté Drumm, a local football star, and marched him off to death row.
Now nine years have passed. Travis has just been paroled in Kansas for a different crime; Donté is four days away from his execution. Travis suffers from an inoperable brain tumor. For the first time in his miserable life, he decides to do what’s right and confess.
But how can a guilty man convince lawyers, judges, and politicians that they’re about to execute an innocent man?
Only a guilty man can save him.

READ AN EXCERPT:
CHAPTER ONE:
The custodian at St. Mark’s had just scraped three inches of snow off the sidewalks when the man with the cane appeared. The sun was up, but the winds were howling; the temperature was stuck at the freezing mark. The man wore only a pair of thin dungarees, a summer shirt, well-worn hiking boots, and a light Windbreaker that stood little chance against the chill. But he did not appear to be uncomfortable, nor was he in a hurry. He was on foot, walking with a limp and a slight tilt to his left, the side aided by the cane. He shuffled along the sidewalk near the chapel and stopped at a side door with the word “Office” painted in dark red. He did not knock and the door was not locked. He stepped inside just as another gust of wind hit him in the back.
The room was a reception area with the cluttered, dusty look one would expect to find in an old church. In the center was a desk with a nameplate that announced the presence of Charlotte Junger, who sat not far behind her name. She said with a smile, “Good morning.”
“Good morning,” the man said. A pause. “It’s very cold out there.”

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Long before his name became synonymous with the modern legal thriller, John Grisham was working 60-70 hours a week at a small Southaven, Mississippi law practice, squeezing in time before going to the office and during courtroom recesses to work on his hobby—writing his first novel.
Born on February 8, 1955 in Jonesboro, Arkansas, to a construction worker and a homemaker, John Grisham as a child dreamed of being a professional baseball player. Realizing he didn't have the right stuff for a pro career, he shifted gears and majored in accounting at Mississippi State University. After graduating from law school at Ole Miss in 1981, he went on to practice law for nearly a decade in Southaven, specializing in criminal defense and personal injury litigation. In 1983, he was elected to the state House of Representatives and served until 1990.
One day at the DeSoto County courthouse, Grisham overheard the harrowing testimony of a twelve-year-old rape victim and was inspired to start a novel exploring what would have happened if the girl's father had murdered her assailants. Getting up at 5 a.m. every day to get in several hours of writing time before heading off to work, Grisham spent three years on A Time to Kill and finished it in 1987. Initially rejected by many publishers, it was eventually bought by Wynwood Press, who gave it a modest 5,000 copy printing and published it in June 1988.
That might have put an end to Grisham's hobby. However, he had already begun his next book, and it would quickly turn that hobby into a new full-time career—and spark one of publishing's greatest success stories. The day after Grisham completed A Time to Kill, he began work on another novel, the story of a hotshot young attorney lured to an apparently perfect law firm that was not what it appeared. When he sold the film rights to The Firm to Paramount Pictures for $600,000, Grisham suddenly became a hot property among publishers, and book rights were bought by Doubleday. Spending 47 weeks on The New York Times bestseller list, The Firm became the bestselling novel of 1991.
The successes of The Pelican Brief, which hit number one on the New York Times bestseller list, and The Client, which debuted at number one, confirmed Grisham's reputation as the master of the legal thriller. Grisham's success even renewed interest in A Time to Kill, which was republished in hardcover by Doubleday and then in paperback by Dell. This time around, it was a bestseller.
Since first publishing A Time to Kill in 1988, Grisham has written one novel a year (his other books are The Firm, The Pelican Brief, The Client, The Chamber, The Rainmaker, The Runaway Jury, The Partner, The Street Lawyer, The Testament, The Brethren, A Painted House, Skipping Christmas, The Summons, The King of Torts, Bleachers, The Last Juror, The Broker, Playing for Pizza, and The Appeal) and all of them have become international bestsellers. There are currently over 225 million John Grisham books in print worldwide, which have been translated into 29 languages. Nine of his novels have been turned into films (The Firm, The Pelican Brief, The Client, A Time to Kill, The Rainmaker, The Chamber, A Painted House, The Runaway Jury, and Skipping Christmas), as was an original screenplay, The Gingerbread Man. The Innocent Man (October 2006) marked his first foray into non-fiction.
Grisham lives with his wife Renee and their two children Ty and Shea. The family splits their time between their Victorian home on a farm in Mississippi and a plantation near Charlottesville, VA.
Grisham took time off from writing for several months in 1996 to return, after a five-year hiatus, to the courtroom. He was honoring a commitment made before he had retired from the law to become a full-time writer: representing the family of a railroad brakeman killed when he was pinned between two cars. Preparing his case with the same passion and dedication as his books' protagonists, Grisham successfully argued his clients' case, earning them a jury award of $683,500—the biggest verdict of his career.
When he's not writing, Grisham devotes time to charitable causes, including most recently his Rebuild The Coast Fund, which raised 8.8 million dollars for Gulf Coast relief in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. He also keeps up with his greatest passion: baseball. The man who dreamed of being a professional baseball player now serves as the local Little League commissioner. The six ballfields he built on his property have played host to over 350 kids on 26 Little League teams.

This sounds like a really interesting book. I think the idea that a guilty person would be glad to have someone innocent pay for his crime is really unique. I would love to read it.

Your first sentence - An innocent man is about to be executed. Only a guilty man can save him. That first made me know I really would enjoy this book! Also mysteries are a favorite of mine.

I haven't found a John Grisham novel that I didn't like and I have read most of them on this review. The success of this author is really told in the numbers 225 million books in print and translated into 29 languages. I few weeks ago I finished reading "A Painted House" for the second time ... I love his writing style and his ability to bring his characters to life. I would very much love to win this John Grisham novel so thanks for the opportunity.

All of us in my family are Grisham fans. This book sounds interesting..how an innocent man gets convicted of a crime. Unfortunately this probably happens often in real life. Thanks for the giveaway.

I found it interesting that Grisham wanted to be a professional baseball player when he was young. I have read most of his books, but not The Chamber and Time to Kill. My favorite was Street Lawyer.

The storyline intrigues me. How can the Travis character live with himself knowing an innocent man is being punished for his crime.
monagarg@yahoo.com
I visited his website and learned from his bio that he took some time off from reading to honor a commitment that ended up being the biggest verdict of his career.
I've never read a Grisham novel but have seen several movies based on them. This one sounds like a great place to start.

I am a fan but besides that I would like to know what the man ready to be executed was thinking knowing that he was innocent. Also, I curious was a the killer a sociopath?
CarolNWong(at)aol(dot)com
On his website, he said that he worked from 60 to 70hours a week as an attorney.
That sounds right. My first husband worked at least that and he was in a small town too.
I checked the books that I read and came up with:
1. The Client
2. The Runaway Jury(favorite so far)
3. The Firm
I thought I read more but the list of all his books did not come up on my computer. Sigh!

I'm excited to read what happens in John Grisham's latest novel. What a great concept, a guilty man has to convince everyone that the man convicted of his crime and is now on death row is really innocent.

I love his books.
I think I've loved (or at least really liked) everything John Grisham has written. All it takes is his name for me to know that I'd enjoy this book. The premise sounds very interesting - how does anyone manage to get an execution stopped when it's mere days away?
I learned that when he’s not writing, Grisham devotes time to charitable causes, including most recently his Rebuild The Coast Fund, which raised 8.8 million dollars for Gulf Coast relief in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. The story sounds fascinating! A race to save a man's life - guilt/innocence...
bingomamanorma(at)gmail(dot)com
I thought it was interesting how Grisham got the idea for his first book.
adrianecoros(at)gmail(dot)com
Besides the fact that I LOVE John Grisham, I find it interesting that the guilty man would confess to save the innocent man even if his death is near-there has to be other motives.

I had no idea that John served on the House of Representatives-I wonder if Congress was awed by his celebrity. I've read A Time To Kill and loved it.

The first thing that makes me want to read this is that it is written by John Grisham. He never disappoints. Next is the idea that a guitly man confesses while on his "deathbed" and people don't believe him.

I entered the DEADLY INTENT GIVEAWAY
mittens0831 at aol dot com
I would love to read this because I have a cousin who was recently released from prison after serving nearly 17 years for a murder he did not commit nor was involved in. Unfortunately, now that he is free he has cancer so his life was ruined by being falsely accused.
Thanks for the great giveaway :)

Everyone of John Grisham's books are page turners and this one is no different. I'm an avid fan of Mr. Grisham's writings and would like to add this to the list of his books I've read.

I like that it sounds like a gripping plot. I am sure this happens in real life more than we realize (innocent people convicted and imprisoned or worse yet, executed). wgbc1446[at]yahoo[dot]com
I like that the website lists retailers that carry the book. Two of my favorite John Grisham books are The Testament and The Pained House. wgbc1446[at]yahoo[dot]com

I am greatly interested in the Innocence Project and this book is an exciting one about an innocent condemned man. I really want to read this one.
I've read all his previous books and really enjoyed them! I have requested this one at the library but I'm still on the wait list! If I won it, I wouldn't have to wait any longer!

oh wow - his 23 previous books will be available as e-books!
I've read all his books and enjoyed most of them, but I think when he writes about sports, I will pass on those books in the future- I was not thrilled by Playing for Pizza or Bleachers.
oh, I lied - I never read The Painted House since my sister read it and hated it. Our tastes are pretty similar

I love John grisham. What I like about this book is that it is a new one of his that i haven't read yet since i think i have read all of his others at one time or another.
kerrie@mayansfamily.com
I went to his website and realized that I haven't read his book Playing for Pizza yet but i have read all his other books. I found it interesting that he was interviewed by Matt Lauer.

I think the race against time and the speculation about whether or not someone will believe a deathbed type confession will make for interesting reading. Thanks so much! pamelashockley(AT)aol(DOT)com
I have read numerous books he's written, but I think the Client was my favorite so far. Thanks so much! pamelashockley(AT)aol(DOT)com
Another awesome giveaway! Thank you! I'd like to win this book because 1) I haven't read a JG book yet I haven't liked and 2) it has a Kansas connection and I'm from Kansas. I REALLY wish he'd not wait so long between books!!! :-)

I had no idea he had such a passion for baseball. He even built six ballfields on his property. I have read ALL of his books. I think the thing I enjoy most is how "real" they are!

Grisham wanted to be a professional baseball player when he was young.

I want to find out if the guilty man can convince them he is really the killer instead of the man convicted for the crime

I've read 19 of his books. When I went to his website I discovered the book of short stories and then watched the interview with Grisham and Matt L. The 7 short stories were ideas for books but he couldn't develop them into a complete novel
