MY REVIEW:
THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES Author, Tony DiTerlizzi, has a gift and we, the readers, are the lucky recipient as he now embarks on the first of a new trilogy with THE SEARCH FOR WONDLA. The story is centered around twelve-year-old Eva Nine, who is being raised in isolation, in an underground compound, called Sanctuary. Her caregiver is a robot named Muthr which stands for Multi-Utility Task Help Robot. Eva Nine has never met another human although she wishes she could, and she can only dream of a world above ground. She is sure that it must be a place filled with wonderful, caring humans who would be friends to her.

Eva Nine is given the chance to find out if her idea of the surface of the planet is what she thought it would be when Sanctuary is attacked and Eva must escape from a determined alien hunter named Besteel. Once Eva escapes to the surface of the planet, she finds a reality completely different from the one she'd prepared for. Her quest to find other humans while staying out of the clutches of Besteel, takes Eva Nine on many fascinating, as well as dangerous, adventures. Eva is courageous and bright but also very inexperienced with a background filled with misinformation that doesn’t do her much good where she is now. Through the wonderful descriptive narration of Tony DiTerlizzi, readers will feel Eva Nine’s confusion, as well as share in her amazement and wonder, her fear and her panic, during all her adventures and discoveries.

Along with Eva’s wonder and DiTerlizzi’s enchanted narration, THE SEARCH FOR WONDLA is driven by the stunning illustrations and the “augmented reality” pages that are throughout the book. Readers can’t help but become involved in Eva’s world and care about what happens to her. Running almost 500 pages, THE SEARCH FOR WONDLA is an admirable first book to capture readers who will eagerly await the next book in the planned trilogy. The end of the book is wonderful as just enough is told but also enough leaves you hanging so that you will be eagerly awaiting the next installment.

This book sounds even better than I thought it would be. I love stories like this, where the reality is so different from what the main character expects.

What a cool concept -- augmented reality! I want to win this book to see just how this works. This book sounds like a great beginning to a wonderful trilogy.
