ABOUT THE AUDIO BOOK:
For the Green family, it's going to be a summer of hard work, blackmail...and flying pigs!

The Green family is living quite happily on Deep Valley Farm until war breaks out. Father goes off to fight who knows where, the Greens' spoiled cousins come from the city to stay and someone threatens to take the farm from them. Just when it seems things can't get any worse, the piglets escape and the children get completely Out of Control. Only one person can be counted on in a situation like this: enter Nanny McPhee. But beware...Nanny McPhee is nothing like other nannies - and it's not just the warts!

With wit and warmth, Emma Thompson, writer and star of Nanny McPhee Returns, recounts one family's tumultuous summer in an audiobook that alternates between the story and a behind-the-scenes film diary, bringing a delightful and unique perspective to this funny and magical adventure for all ages.
PRAISE FOR NANNY McPHEE RETURNS:
"Author Emma Thompson delights listeners with spot-on observations about family relationships and working friendships. As performer, she presents an exuberant and enthusiastic accounting of each character she has created...Only the most jaded listener will be able to refrain from laughing out loud." - AudioFile magazine, Earphones Award Winner

"All the magic of the movie version illuminates every page, but what is a special gift, is hearing Thompson put the book-on-tape narration world on notice...Having an Oscar-winning writer in Emma Thompson doesn't hurt things when it comes to putting movie words into the page-turning form of a book. Hearing those words come to life through Thompason's acting proficiency is a match made in heaven." - SheKnows.com

MY REVIEW:
What better to listen to at this time of the year when we all wish we were kids again with holidays creeping closer and our minds on family and fun then Emma Thompson’s delightful NANNY McPHEE RETURNS Audio Book?  For the fans of the first Nanny McPhee, this is surely good news and if you haven’t met the magic stick carrying McPhee, you are in for a treat. With Thompson’s reworking of the Nurse Matilda stories by Christianna Brand, she has brought this new character to life on the screen, in books, and now in audio books as well.

The story centers around the Green family who live on a farm in the English countryside. When the father must leave to go to serve in WWII, Mother Green is left to care for the farm with only the children to help. This isn’t too easy as she came from a wealthy family who disowned her when she fell in love and married a poor farmer so this work doesn’t come naturally to her, but she doesn’t mind. They are a happy family and that’s what counts, that is until trouble starts! Trouble with a capital T as Mrs. Green’s sister comes and leaves her two children who are snooty and spoiled city kids. They need to get away from the bombing in the city but don’t show much in the way of thanks by staying at the farm. This makes it very hard for Mrs. Green to care for the farm and now five children as well. With some rambunctious piglets to keep up with, a nasty brother-in-law who wants her to sell the farm, and money being short, Mrs. Green needs help and who should come to the rescue but none other than Nanny McPhee, warts and all.

The story itself is entertaining and I enjoyed how Oscar Winner Emma Thompson used her talents to tell the story with a sort of tongue-in-cheek manner as if she was letting the listener in on a private joke only they would understand. Her narrative is lively and the voices she uses enchant. Thompson alternates between the main story and a diary which tells how the movie was made with all the inside jokes and secrets. The story is a fine old charming tale and the diary adds the extra spirit to make you laugh out loud. Just a delightful 5 hours of fun and relaxation spent as NANNY McPHEE RETURNS!

The character of Nurse Matilda was invented by the author's family, and when the author was a little girl, her grandmother used to delight her with stories about the magic nanny.

I like that it's not just the story but anecdotes from making the movie. What I liked best about these movies was the scene where the older kids faked out the earlier nanny into thinking they were eating their baby sister.

Edward Ardizzone was born October 16, 1900 in Haiphong, French Indochina (now Vietnam). His father served in the Far East with the Eastern Extension Telegraph Company. His mother moved the children to England when Ardizzone was five years old, where he remained for the rest of his life. As a child, he and his cousin Arthur explored the docks together and were given free run by the sailors. These experiences were the basis for the "Tim" books.
