A Sharon McCone Mystery
BY MARCIA MULLER
ABOUT THE BOOK:
In Locked In, San Francisco private eye Sharon McCone was shot in the head and suffered from locked-in syndrome: almost total paralysis but with an alert, conscious mind. Now, as Sharon struggles to regain control over her body, she wants everything to go back to normal, but realizes that it may not be possible to return to her old life. Meanwhile, Sharon's relationships are suffering. Her husband is impatient with her refusal to accept help and some of her colleagues doubt her abilities after the accident. But when Sharon's friend from physical therapy goes missing, she must call upon those closest to her to find out the truth behind the disappearance. The investigation soon points to issues of national security and proves to be the most dangerous and critical case yet for Sharon and her colleagues.
Marcia Muller, a Mystery Writers of America Grand Master, is the author of more than twenty novels and many short mystery stories. She has also established a brilliant reputation as an anthologist and critic of mystery fiction. In 1993 she was awarded the Private Eye Writers of America Life Achievement Award, and Wolf in the Shadows was nominated for the 1994 Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best Crime Novel and won the Anthony Boucher Award. She lives with her husband, mystery writer Bill Pronzini, in northern California.
Marcia writes and tells us....
"My first novel (written at age 12) saw a first printing of 5 copies on my Junior Steno typewriter. My relatives are hold them for purposes of blackmail."
"My creative writing instructor at the University of Michigan told me I'd never become a writer."
"My first Sharon McCone novel, Edwin of the Iron Shoes, killed the mystery list at David McKay Company."
"In order to keep up with McCone, I've learned to fly. Imagine a person who's afraid of heights soaring in something that resembles a matchbox with wings at 6500 feet!"
"In researching for books, I've: almost been arrested by an INS agent for straying too close to the US-Mexico border; suffered an overnight trip in what I swear must've been a broom closet on Amtrak; nearly frozen in northern Minnesota (-50 degrees); nearly melted in the California desert (+112 degrees); tried, and almost succeeded, to shoot myself in the foot with a .357 Magnum."
"My greatest fear is that Sharon McCone will show up on my doorstep with her .357 and get even for all the dreadful experiences I've put her through!"
TWENTY YEARS, TWENTY BOOKS!
THE ACCLAIM CONTINUES FOR
MARCIA MULLER
MARCIA MULLER
AND HER SHARON McCONE NOVELS
Marcia Muller has been called the Mother of the Modern Female Sleuth. Over two decades ago she introduced Sharon McCone, a female detective who was street-smart, emotionally complex, and a brilliant shamus. Muller broke new ground. Other writers soon followed....But Muller has stayed the front-runner with a heroine who continues to evolve, plots that surprise, and writing that dazzles. As the San Diego Union observed, "The years have been good to both the creator and her creation: though widely imitated, they have not been surpassed." Now the first recipient of the Ridley Award and the 1999 recipient of the first Romantic Times Lifetime Achievement in Suspense Award, Muller has written twenty Sharon McCone mysteries. Both author and detective are just entering their prime...

I think everyone's biggest fear is to be locked-into their own body and not be able to communicate. We have a friend whose daughter is similar to this. She cannot speak but can move and walk in a limited way. It just sounds like a fascinating book. garczynski (at) aol (dot) com

Sounds like another perfect plot and mystery. I thought it amazing that her novel was written at age 12. I would say that she has made a career of writing. Thanks for hosting another great mystery contest ... my favorite genre.

Locked-in syndrome would make an interesting read. captainliss40@gmail.com
The idea of being paralyzed but alert sounds intriguing for the story. Not something I'd want to experience myself, except through reading.

It is difficult with a disability to ask for help sometimes. I would like to see how the main character overcomes it, because she is concerned about her friend. I would love to read the book.

I hate to admit I had not heard of Marcia Muller until until I read your post today. I love mystery and a female Detective or PI is awesome to read. Thank you so much for introducing me to Marcia's books. I would love to win and am adding her to my new author list and her Sharon McCone books to my wish list.

I have a friend who gets paralysis of different parts of body like her legs and the doctors cannot figure out why. It comes and goes so I can easily imagine the terror of that happening. That and the fact that this looks like an engrossing mystery makes me want to win this book.

I actually had heard of "locked-in syndrome", it was used in an episode on "Young & Restless". It would be interesting to read a book that also has this storyline and hey! it's a mystery suspense. So what's not to like.
