"BAFFLING BINGO DAY"
I'M EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE THIS THURSDAY'S
"BAFFLING BINGO DAY"
SECOND MYSTERY BOOK CHOICE IS.....GIVEAWAY ENDED
THE WOLVES OF ANDOVER
BY KATHLEEN KENT
ABOUT THE BOOK:
In the harsh wilderness of colonial Massachusetts, Martha Allen works as a servant in her cousin's household, taking charge and locking wills with everyone. Thomas Carrier labors for the family and is known both for his immense strength and size and mysterious past. The two begin a courtship that suits their independent natures, with Thomas slowly revealing the story of his part in the English Civil War. But in the rugged new world they inhabit, danger is ever present, whether it be from the assassins sent from London to kill the executioner of Charles I or the wolves-in many forms-who hunt for blood.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Kathleen Kent is a tenth-generation descendant of Martha Carrier. She is also a masterful storyteller, and in her first novel, THE HERETICT'S DAUGHTER, she painted a haunting portrait, not just of Puritan New England but also of one family’s deep and abiding love in the face of fear and persecution. Kathleen Kent lives in Dallas.
MY REVIEW:
Set before Kathleen Kent’s best-selling THE HERETIC’S DAUGHTER, THE WOLVES OF ANDOVER is a prequel of sorts to the first book. This second book tells of the early years of Martha Carrier who was put on trial for being a witch in THE HERETIC’S DAUGHTER. Fascinating to look at what led Martha to that path, THE WOLVES OF ANDOVER is actually three stories entwined together to make one captivating historical fiction novel. Kathleen Kent is a descendant of Martha Carrier and I found it interesting that she took her own family’s heritage and made fiction out of it.
Set in Massachusetts colonial America back in 1673, the dark and intriguing story is filled with brilliantly depicted characters set in a world that was hard and dreary, as well as dangerous to live in. As the three stories go from one to another, readers will find themselves entranced with one part and then whisked away into another. The main story is about Martha Allen being sent to live with her cousin Patience and her family. She is sent there to spend the time dealing with her pregnancy, and is treated poorly by her own family. In fact, she works harder than their own servants but Martha endures it.
The next part of the story has to do with Thomas Carrier and how his relationship with Martha comes about. The last part of the story comes straight from the title as it is about the wolves. They are dangerous and Kent even describes a couple of wolves being trapped and killed quite graphically. However, these wolves are really not the ones referred to in the title of the book. The title is symbolic of the people in the story who you might say are “dressed in wolves’ clothing”. All three parts bring history into the story and readers will find themselves turning pages to see what happens next. If you are a historical fiction fan, you will greatly enjoy this superbly written book, THE WOLVES OF ANDOVER.

Hi! There are two reasons why I would love to read this book.
1. It involves around the British Civil War which means there will be some action and suspense involved.
2. The cover really caught my eye- I thought it was a novel about witches until I read your review.
Thank you for a fantastic giveaway! :)

I am really excited to see this book up for giveaway. I have 'The Heretic's Daughter' on my TBR shelf and have been longing for the time to read it. I really like the idea that is the prequel and that the author is the descendent from the Martha Carrier in the book. In my genealogic research I have found one ancestor living in Salem Massachuetts at the time of the witch trials and also involved in the trials. That makes this book all the more interesting to me.

The other book that I want to read is 'The Heretic's Daughter' which is sitting on my TBR shelf. About three years ago, I and my husband went to see some of the places where my ancesters were living and Salem was one of them. That town seemed to have a character of it own with lots of old architecture in the center area of town, We went to a play about the Salem Witch Trails which was quite good with the audience sitting in the middle and the scenes taking place on different stages of the room. I also stocked up on some books on the witchcraft trials. It is a very exciting place to visit just as this part of our history is.

I enjoyed reading THE HERETIC'S DAUGHTER.
megalon22 at yahoo dot com
One of my favorite genres is historical fiction, specifically this time period. I am fascinated by the puritanical beliefs of this era and how people can be so easily influenced by what can only be described as "fanatical clergy". The Salem Witch Trials have a particular appeal so would love to read this prequel to "The Heretic's Daughter".
