THE BRAVE: A GIVEAWAY

THE BRAVE
BY NICHOLAS EVANS

ABOUT THE BOOK:
There's little love in eight-year-old Tom Bedford's life. His parents are old and remote and the boarding school they've sent him to bristles with bullies and sadistic staff. The only comfort he gets is from his fantasy world of Cowboys and Indians. But when his sister Diane, a rising star of stage and screen, falls in love with one of his idols, the suave TV cowboy Ray Montane, Tom's life is transformed. They move to Hollywood and all his dreams seem to have come true. Soon, however, the sinister side of Tinseltown casts its shadow and a shocking act of violence changes their lives forever.

What happened all those years ago remains a secret that corrodes Tom's life and wrecks his marriage. Only when his estranged son, a US Marine, is charged with murder do the events resurface, forcing him to confront his demons. As he struggles to save his son's life, he will learn the true meaning of bravery.

Powerfully written and intensely moving, The Brave traces the legacy of violence behind the myth of the American West and explores our quest for love and identity, the fallibility of heroes and the devastating effects of family secrets.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Nicholas Evans studied law at Oxford University after serving in Africa with Voluntary Service Overseas. He then worked as a newspaper reporter, TV producer and screenwriter before writing four bestselling novels. His first book, The Horse Whisperer was made into a movie directed by Robert Redford. He lives in Devon with his wife, singer/songwriter Charlotte Gordon Cumming. Her album of songs, inspired by The Brave, can be heard at www.thebravesongs.com.

I have several comments to make about this post. First one is that the cover of this book really ROCKS! I love western art and western movies so this cover really caught my eye! Secondly ... The Horse Whisperer is a fantastic book and likewise the movie is GREAT as well. My final comment is that after reading this review I would love to read this book. I like the statement that you may find the "true meaning of bravery." As I exit Bingo's Blog I am wondering what it would be like to one of those western heroes!

P.S. I like your "Elf on the shelf."

Watching the video that Nicolas Evans made for the book talks about why it took so long to write the book & how his perspective has changed. I love the premise of this book and will add this to my TBB pile.

It's a shame that the boy in the story grew up with out other friends. I have been to Tinseltown and it is not all glamour. I would like to read this book because addresses the question of what is the true meaning of bravery.

I would pick the 'Smoke Jumper" because I am familiar with the destruction, human and otherwise that forest fires can create. I lived in two different areas in Southern Claifornia and in both places, could see the fires in the mountains or smell and see the ash from the fires. It would take a very
brave person to be a smoke
jumper.

The book is about the fallout from family secrets and don't we all have family secrets? Thus, it is a universal theme and quite interesting.

I would pick the 'Smoke Jumper" because my son's girlfriend is a firefighter and smoke jumper in Arizona. I am also familiar with the destruction, human and otherwise that forest fires can create. I have pictures of the fires in the mountains and the ash from the fires. It takes a very
brave person to be a smoke
jumper and she definately is one. I am so proud of her.
