DEWEY'S NINE LIVES: REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY

GIVEAWAY ENDED
DEWEY'S NINE LIVES:
The Legacy of the Small-Town Cat Who Inspired Millions
BY VICKI MYRON
with BRETT WITTER

ABOUT THE BOOK:
DEWEY’S NINE LIVES: The Legacy of the Small-Town Library Cat Who Inspired Millions offers nine funny, inspiring, and heartwarming stories about cats---all told from the perspective of "Dewey's Mom," librarian Vicki Myron. The amazing felines in this book include Dewey, of course, whose further never-before-told adventures are shared, and several others who Vicki found out about when their owners reached out to her. Vicki learned, through extensive interviews and story sharing, what made these cats special, and how they fit into Dewey's community of perseverance and love. From a divorced mother in Alaska who saved a drowning kitten on Christmas Eve to a troubled Vietnam veteran whose heart was opened by his long relationship with a rescued cat, these Dewey-style stories will inspire readers to laugh, cry, care, and, most importantly, believe in the magic of animals to touch individual lives.
More information about Vicki, Dewey, and the books can be found online at:http://www.deweyreadmorebooks.com and http://community.penguin.com/_Dewey-the-Cat/group/122380/150186.html.

MY REVIEW:
After the publication of the first book, DEWEY THE SMALL TOWN CAT WHO TOUCHED THE WORLD by Vicki Myron was published, Vicki began to receive letters from all over the world from people who told her how much Dewey’s story meant to them. To back up a bit, this all started when Vicki Myron, the librarian of the public library in Des Moines, Iowa, was surprised one day when she found a small kitten in the book drop. The kitten had nothing for warmth and the weather outside was terribly cold. Vicki knew the books around the kitty weren’t enough to keep it warm and wondered who could do such an awful thing? Long story short, nobody could have ever known how finding and saving this kitten would change the lives of so many people in this town, with Vicki being the first. Dewey, as he was named after the Dewey Decimal System of the library, became a resident at the library and lived there for the next nineteen years, touching so many lives.

Author Vicki Myron read all the letters from people who had learned of Dewey’s brave story and how he had helped so many people. They then shared with her, their stories from their own special cats and so Vicki felt there was more stories to tell, in Dewey’s honor. DEWEY’S NINE LIVES: The Legacy of the Small-Town Cat Who Inspired Millions resulted from nine stories about all kinds of cats. There were so many unique cats and owners but Vicki narrowed it down to these nine and although all the stories share some connection, they are all different depending on the owner and their special cat’s gift. Many of the stories have in common people living with problems like unemployment, alcoholism, homelessness and poverty, as well as loneliness itself. Some of the cats were comfort cats who cuddled and purred at just the right times while others made their owners laugh, or guarded them much like a guard dog would do. However, every story’s writer recognizes how their special cat played a very important part in their lives. Of course, there are even a couple more stories about wonderful things that Dewey did for “his” people.

Whether a “cat person” or not (I’m not, admittedly), you will enjoy this book and be inspired by each and every story just like I was. I found myself so taken with each person’s plight that it was very emotional to read. This is the perfect book for this time of the year, or any time of the year, but if you are looking for a gift for a special person in your life, DEWEY’S NINE LIVES would be a really good choice.

The first Dewey book is one of my favorite book. The author's book really touched me and so many other people. I would like to read this book for the rest of Dewey's adventures and those cats tales. I am basically a dog person but I cannot resist cats. Recently our neighbor's cat climbed into the engine area of our to get warm. We had to park our car in the garage to prevent her from doing it again! Cats are special!

I read the excerpt. One stories that the author included was about a cat that survived being attacked by a coyote and smacked by a bear. This is because one of our cats was attacked by a bobcat. She came to me and I drove to the vet's office wondering how she could ever survive that! They stitched her up and she was fine!

She received thousands of letters about kitties and was compelled to write the stories of the love between human and kitties. There are so many abuse stories out there but she wanted to write about the love.

My kitty Jenna passed away 4 years ago. We had her 19 years. She was "my little girl." I haven't been able to get another kitty because the pain of loosing her was so great; I just can't imagine going through that again. But, now I realize how lonely I am. Maybe if I ready about others and their kitties, I can consider getting another cat to love once again.

The Dewey postcards are really cute, especially the one of Dewey on the computer. He sure can sit still, and looks so cute.

"A small animal can change your life." This quote at the end of the prologue has me thinking.
