ARE YOU LISTENING? DAY: FIRST GRAVE ON THE RIGHT -REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY

WELCOME TO
BOOKIN' WITH BINGO'S
"ARE YOU LISTENING? DAY"
I AM EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE THIS FRIDAY'S
AUDIO BOOK CHOICE IS.....

GIVEAWAY ENDED
FIRST GRAVE ON THE RIGHT
BY DARYNDA JONES
READ BY LORELEI KING

ABOUT THE AUDIO BOOK:
A smashing, award-winning debut novel that introduces Charley Davidson: part-time private investigator and full-time Grim Reaper...

Charley sees dead people. That’s right, she sees dead people. And it’s her job to convince them to “go into the light.” But when these very dead people have died under less than ideal circumstances (i.e. murder), sometimes they want Charley to bring the bad guys to justice. Complicating matters are the intensely hot dreams she’s been having about an Entity who has been following her all her life...and it turns out he might not be dead after all. In fact, he might be something else entirely. This is a thrilling debut novel from an exciting newcomer to the world of paranormal romantic suspense.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
DARYNDA JONES lives in the Land of Enchantment, also known as New Mexico, with her husband of more than twenty-five years and two beautiful sons, aka the Mighty, Mighty Jones Boys.

PREVIEW-CHAPTER ONE:
Go to the Macmillan Audio Website HERE and listen to the first chapter of FIRST GRAVE ON THE RIGHT for a preview.

MY REVIEW:
FIRST GRAVE ON THE RIGHT is the award winning first book in a series by Darynda Jones that is sure to be a huge success if this first installment is any indication. In it, Jones created the main character, Charley Davidson, as the Grim Reaper rather than having based her book on the clichéd werewolves, vampires and fairies so abundant in the market right now.

Charley is unlike any Grim Reaper that may come to mind. Forget the creepy, cloaked omen wielding a jagged and lethal scythe! Charley is a twenty-seven year old energetic and “spirited” gal who is a private investigator when she isn’t helping souls cross over to the other side…whichever side that may be. Most souls can get to their destination naturally by crossing over on their own, but a few still have a score to settle. It is with this unfinished business where Charley comes in as she is their actual access to heaven or hell. To the living, Charley is a spunky, attractive part time consultant to the police force where her Uncle Bob works, but to those who need her to get to their final destination, she is literally a bright light. Right, the one you hear so much about; dazzling, radiant, and inviting.

Charley has the police officers she works with stumped on how she solves crimes that had them so baffled. They don’t know she is communicating with the dead who are telling her what happened. Charley goes both ways, talking with the living and the dead just the same. However, she is also not all work. You are correct if you thought there must be a love interest because there are actually several possibilities. Heading the list is a being known as Big Bad who seems to be trying to save Charley; Garrett Swopes who works with Uncle Bob and REALLY vies for Charley’s attention, while she is into a third candidate, a guy named Reyes she can’t get out of her mind. But it is Big Bad who will dominate as he mysteriously holds Charley’s attention as she doesn’t know who or what he is, or what he wants with her, but she can’t get him out of her mind.

Charley finds herself in this first book of the series helping three dead lawyers find their killer, while also introducing readers to several characters that are dead but still haven’t crossed over. Many of these seem to be ones that will be heard from throughout, or later on in, the series-EX: Mr. Woo! Darynda Jones is scheduled to release SECOND GRAVE ON THE LEFT around August, 2011.

With FIRST GRAVE ON THE RIGHT, the Audio Book, I found it very convenient in this format because I wanted to find out where this original and humorous tale was going and was literally able to take it with me and continue, even while driving. Charley is a character you root for even with her often sarcastic, sharp, but witty come backs. Finding out what happens to her and those around her holds your attention, and readers who like a bit of Chick Lit with their Paranormal Romance will find FIRST GRAVE ON THE RIGHT, right down their alley. Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance books are a huge part of the current book world, and add in the Chick Lit feel of this book and I believe Darynda Jones knows how to spell success.

I like the idea that the grim reaper is vibrant and alive in our world. Also, that she is a investigator that solves crimes with the help of the dead sounds clever. I would like to read the book.

First Grave On the Right hits home for me. Here's why!
11/19/09 — It is with a heavy heart that we report the remains of Kelly Currin Morris, age 28, were located in the southern part of Granville County, NC. Kelly’s husband, Scott, has been charged with first-degree murder and fraudulently burning a dwelling, and prosecutors are seeking the death penalty in the case.
She was last seen on September 3rd, 2008. Her house was burned down on the 4th, in Stem, North Carolina. She was last seen wearing blue jeans and a grey colored t-shirt. Her car was found in a new subdivision that was just getting homes built. The fire has been ruled arson.
I hope this case can soon be over and she can rest in peace. She has a seven year old daughter that will always be haunted by her death.
Something about this post has reminded me of this.
Thanks!
Rebecca

I find this fascinating because it seems to have appeal across many genres....romance, crime, paranormal, urban lit. As a librarian, too, I read SOO much, and sometimes titles across genres that may not be my first choice. To be honest, paranormal fiction -- well, I just don't "get it" entirely, and this sounds like a GREAT intro. Love to try. Thanks!! joleehamlin [at] comcast [dot] net

What could be more interesting than speaking to dead people? Imagine all that they went through & the info of the here after they could pass on to you. I like this twist in the book of helping people go in to the light, but before that, solving their own personal mystery. Pay back is often warranted!
