WELCOME TO BOOKIN' WITH BINGO'S
"BAFFLING BINGO DAY"
I'M EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE THIS THURSDAY'S
MYSTERY BOOK CHOICE IS.....
GIVEAWAY ENDED
RESERVED FOR THE CAT
An Elemental Masters Novel
BY MERCEDES LACKEY

ABOUT THE BOOK:
Based loosely on the tale of Puss in Boots, Reserved for the Cat takes place in 1910 in an alternate London. A young dancer, penniless and desperate, is sure she is going mad when a cat begins talking to her mind-to-mind. But her feline guide, actually an Elemental Earth Spirit, helps her to impersonate a famous Russian ballerina and achieve the success she’s been dreaming of. Unfortunately she also attracts the attention of another Elemental Spirit—a far more threatening one—and the young dancer must once again turn to her mysteriously powerful four-legged furry friend.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Mercedes Lackey is a full-time writer and has published numerous novels and works of short fiction, including the best-selling Heralds Of Valdemar series. She is also a professional lyricist and a licensed wild bird rehabilitator. Mercedes has a degree in biology from Purdue University. Like many writers she has worked at a variety of jobs, including short stints as a waitress, security guard and artist's model. She lives in Oklahoma with her husband, artist Larry Dixon, and their flock of parrots.

A LITTLE ABOUT THE ELEMENTAL MASTERS SERIES:
The setting of the "Elemental Masters" is an alternative Earth during the early 1900s. The main and perhaps sole difference between this world and our reality is that magic exists, controlled by those who have mastery over the four classical elements (fire, air, water, earth). The majority of the tales take place in England, with The Fire Rose taking place in North America and focusing on the San Francisco area. While history does tend to follow the real-life time line, historic calamities such as the great urban fire of Chicago and the earthquake in San Francisco are attributed to the elemental images that serve as the series namesakes.

The world of the "Elemental Masters" is home to two main types of magic: the elemental magic that plays an important part in the series and ESP that is largely explored in The Wizard of London. There have been mentions of different types and degrees of magical ability in the series.

Elemental magic is the most commonly seen form of magic in the series, with every book having at least a couple of elemental masters as major characters, with one serving as the antagonist. The masters' abilities are tied with their ability to see and control spirits of a particular elemental affinity. Elemental magicians are classed by their affinity (Earth, Air, Fire, and/or Water) and by their mastery of their magic; one can be an Elemental Magician or an Elemental Master.

Other books in the series and what they are based on are listed below:
  • The Fire Rose based on Beauty and the Beast
  • The Serpent's Shadow based on Snow White
  • The Gates of Sleep based on Sleeping Beauty
  • Phoenix And Ashes based on Cinderella
  • The Wizard of London based on The Snow Queen
  • Reserved for the Cat based on Puss in Boots

Though lord knows I've heard of Mercedes Lackey, I've never read any of her books. I do have the Diana Tregarde series on my shelf so would probably read it first.

I think it's interesting how a cat can talk to a person mind-to-mind instead of actual speaking!

For sci-fi movie, I'm guessing Star Wars counts? It's almost it's own genre anymore, but I've always been a fan.
