ABOUT THE BOOK: 

Georgia Bottoms is known in her small community of Six Points, Alabama, as a beautiful, well-to-do, and devoutly Baptist Southern belle.

Nobody realizes that the family fortune has long since disappeared, and a determinedly single woman like Georgia needs an alternative, and discreet, means of income. In Georgia's case it is six well-heeled lovers-one for each day of the week, with Mondays off-none of whom knows about the others.

But when the married preacher who has been coming to call (Saturdays) decides to confess their affair in front of the whole congregation, Georgia must take drastic measures to stop him. In GEORGIA BOTTOMS, Mark Childress proves once again his unmistakable skill for combining the hilarious and the absurd to reveal the inner workings of the rebellious human heart.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Mark Childress was born in Monroeville, Alabama. He is the author of six previous novels and three books for children. He has lived in Ohio, Indiana, Mississippi, Louisiana, Georgia, California, Costa Rica, and currently lives in Key West, Florida.

MY REVIEW:

Fans of Mark Childress who gave readers and movie goers CRAZY IN ALABAMA, will be transported to a similar small town and will find its star resident, Georgia, in Childress’ latest, GEORGIA BOTTOMS. Georgia is slightly reminiscent of Aunt Lucille from “Crazy” perhaps in overall feel and a bit of a colorful personality. Otherwise, Georgia is gritty but sweet, strong-minded and smart, and a southern gal we might all want as a friend in certain instances. Georgia is a church going miss in her hometown of Six Points, Alabama, and known as an upstanding member of the community. However, the community doesn’t know that Georgia’s family is in great financial trouble, as in they are broke. It is up to Georgia to keep up the pretense as well as support the family.

With a good-for-nothing brother that Georgia is always having to save from humiliating and sometimes even illegal circumstances, the ball is in Georgia’s court for this family. Her aged mother is suffering from Alzheimer’s and has to be watched carefully as she has been known to take aim at strangers with her pellet gun. This is why Georgia sets up shop above the garage where she is never to be bothered as she is thought to be creating amazing hand-stitched quilts to sell for profit at the town’s craft shop. Well, so everyone thinks but the quilts are not from Georgia and the only creating she is doing above the garage comes in the form of entertainment. Yes, six nights a week, Georgia has a steady clientele of gentlemen who she “entertains” and in return, is paid well for it. 

When one of her “regulars”, the married minister, decides to repent and do so by confessing to the entire congregation about his affair with Georgia, the action switches into high gear. Georgia can’t let this happen and here again we see Childress using his talented imagination to come up with a crazy but honestly heartfelt plan to save our heroine. GEORGIA BOTTOMS is a different kind of book than I usually read and therefore was a nice change of pace. I laughed and found it easy to follow and enjoy. Fans of CRAZY IN ALABAMA will really want to meet GEORGIA BOTTOMS. She is an unforgettable character with a big heart of gold who means well and you can’t help but pull for her to triumph.
