ARE YOU LISTENING? DAY: THE NIGHT SEASON AUDIO BOOK- REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY

 WELCOME TO
BOOKIN' WITH BINGO'S
"ARE YOU LISTENING? DAY"
I AM EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE THIS FRIDAY'S
"ARE YOU LISTENING? DAY"
AUDIO BOOK CHOICE IS.....
GIVEAWAY ENDED
THE NIGHT SEASON
BY CHELSEA CAIN

ABOUT THE AUDIO BOOK:
With the Beauty Killer Gretchen Lowell locked away behind bars once again, Archie Sheridan—a Portland police detective and nearly one of her victims—can finally rest a little easier. Meanwhile, the rest of the city of Portland is in crisis. Heavy rains have flooded the Willamette River, and several people have drowned in the quickly rising waters. Or at least that’s what they thought until the medical examiner discovers that the latest victim didn’t drown: She was poisoned before she went into the water. Soon after, three of those drownings are also proven to be murders. Portland has a new serial killer on its hands, and Archie and his task force have a new case.

Reporter Susan Ward is chasing this story of a new serial killer with gusto, but she’s also got another lead to follow for an entirely separate mystery: The flooding has unearthed a skeleton, a man who might have died more than sixty years ago, the last time Portland flooded this badly, when the water washed away an entire neighborhood and killed at least fifteen people.

With Archie following the bizarre trail of evidence and evil deeds to catch a killer and possibly regain his life, and Susan Ward close behind, Chelsea Cain—one of today’s most talented suspense writers—launches the next installment of her bestselling series with an electric thriller.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Chelsea Cain lived the first few years of her life on an Iowa commune, then grew up in Bellingham, WA, where the infamous Green River killer was “the boogieman” of her youth. The true story of the Green River killer’s capture was the inspiration for the story of Gretchen and Archie. She started writing Heartsick to kill time while she was pregnant. The author of a weekly column in The Oregonian, Cain lives in Portland with her husband and daughter.

PRAISE FOR THE NIGHT SEASON:
“Superb…Cain pinned readers to their seats with a unique mix of horror, black humor, and psychological tension. This time she adds another arrow to her narrative quiver: the interplay between landscape and mood…. Terrifying.”
Booklist (starred review)

“Superb… [Cain is] the new queen of serial-killer fiction.”
Kirkus Reviews

MY THOUGHTS/REVIEW:
With dynamic tempo and excitement, Chelsea Cain brings readers her fourth Archie Sheridan novel, THE NIGHT SEASON. However, this installment is a bit different in that Archie’s serial killing archenemy, Gretchen Lowell, is in prison and so doesn’t play much of a part in this thriller.  For Lowell’s fans, however, Cain does hint that Archie is going to have to deal with Gretchen again and soon, so don‘t be disappointed.

Meanwhile, as is Cain’s style, the city of Portland, Oregon, almost takes on the role of a character, playing such an important part. Portland’s police detective Archie Sheridan is really highlighted like never before in this latest edition. Readers will get to learn more about Archie than ever before. His relationship with his ex-wife as well as his fellow officers are highlighted in the plot of THE NIGHT SEASON. This is also a Cain novel with not as much “blood and guts” and a little easier to take for the faint of heart and yet, it won’t disappoint the regular Cain fans.

When the Willamette River overflows, a body that is found at an amusement park is chalked up as a victim of the flood. However, this was not a drowning as the coroner reports when it is noted that a puncture wound is the cause of death. So Archie and his troops are off to hunt for a killer. Before they get too far, other bodies are found with the same markings and if you didn’t know better, you’d think Gretchen Lowell was out of jail and practicing her serial killing again.

Meanwhile, Susan Ward, is a spunky reporter working on a piece about a skeleton that was found in Vanport, an old ghost town, that was destroyed by a flood in 1948. Due to the similarities, Archie lets Ward accompany his team as they hunt down their new serial killer. Evidently, the killer is using a very strange toxin that plays a big part in the mystery.

THE NIGHT SEASON was a great story to listen to on audio book because I not only could do other things while listening but didn’t have to put it down as happens in most cases when I don’t want to stop reading. The story is fast and draws the reader in not only with the superb story line but the characters are ones readers can relate to. They are interesting, believable, and also exciting. THE NIGHT SEASON just might be my favorite Chelsea Cain book yet but it doesn’t mean I am not waiting eagerly for her next book either!

Mystery ... serial killer .... poison ... skeleton ... you bet I'm interested. I also read online that she attended Lowell Elementary school. The same school that I attended ... well almost, the Lowell Elementary where she attended was in Bellingham, Washington and I attended the the Lowell Elementary in Salina, KS. LOL

I also found out that the Gretchen Series consists of the following novels.

Heartsick (2007)
Sweetheart (2008)
Evil At Heart (2009)
Night Season (2011)

The previous novels Heartsick, Sweetheart, and Evil At Heart have all been New York Times best sellers.

I went to her web site and love the design ... I thought the eye balls on the opening pictures was GREAT! http://www.chelseacain.com/

Thanks for hosting this review and this contest. I am really interested.

I was glad to hear that this Chelsea Cain book didn't have quite as much blood and guts---I will therefore probably like it even better---poison and floods should add lots of suspense to the storyline.

Chelsea's story is interesting. From her childhood fascination with goriness (and the Green River serial killer) to just kind of naturally falling into the Iowa Writer's Workshop because she was there, she's definitely taken good advantage of some opportunties.

I’m entering because the plot in itself sounds interesting and compelling. Then, add to the mix that it is based on a true event (a flood) in history…of which there is still some unknown elements. Next I get to learn about a specific city in the U.S.--Portland, OR--that I have not yet visited. […and the sum feels greater than the individual parts]
