GIVEAWAY ENDED
THE LINEN QUEEN
BY PATRICIA FALVEY
ABOUT THE BOOK:
Abandoned by her father and neglected by her self-centered, unstable mother, Sheila McGee cannot wait to escape the drudgery of her mill village life in Northern Ireland. Her classic Irish beauty helps her win the 1941 Linen Queen competition, and the prize money that goes with it finally gives her the opportunity she's been dreaming of. But Sheila does not count on the impact of the Belfast blitz which brings World War II to her doorstep. Now even her good looks are useless in the face of travel restrictions, and her earlier resolve is eroded by her ma's fear of being left alone.
When American troops set up base in her village, some see them as occupiers but Sheila sees them as saviors--one of them may be her ticket out. Despite objections from her childhood friend, Gavin O'Rourke, she sets her sights on an attractive Jewish-American army officer named Joel Solomon, but her plans are interrupted by the arrival of a street-wise young evacuee from Belfast.
Frustrated, Sheila fights to hold on to her dream but slowly her priorities change as the people of Northern Ireland put old divisions aside and bond together in a common purpose to fight the Germans. Sheila's affection for Joel grows as she and Gavin are driven farther apart. As the war moves steadily closer to those she has grown to love, Sheila confronts more abandonment and loss, and finds true strength, compassion, and a meaning for life outside of herself.

This book has been on my "to-reads" list on Goodreads for quite some time, and I also entered to win it through Goodreads earlier in the year. I think the story sounds like that of a strong female character - and I absolutely love strong, fearless female characters that can face their demons, and handle their emotions. Plus, I have a special place in my heart for all books based in England, Scotland and Ireland...I absolutely love and adore the whole landscape of that area! :)
Thank you for hosting this giveaway and please enter me in it! Much obliged!

I'm not sure if you wanted something on Agatha Raisin/Hamish Macbeth author MC Beaton or something on Patricia Falvey, so I am providing information on both.
For M.C Beaton:
I love that she worked as a waitress, during rough times, because I believe that it speaks to her character. It is also astounding that she has written more than 100 historical romance novels!
For Patricia Falvey:
On her site, in the "About Patricia Falvey" section, there is a banner on top that has the quote, "I have left outside the borders anger fear and regret. I am at peace now for a time, just as my beloved Ulster. Now my warrior sleeps while wisdom stands watch." Ms. Falvey's biography is absolutely impressive, but it was this BEAUTIFUL quote that resonated most with me, and I will be adding her book "The Yellow House" to my "to-read" list because of it! :)

It sounds like a young woman's interesting journey through some very troubled times. Plus, it is set in Ireland, someplace I have always wanted to go.

I usually am not drawn to historical romance novels, but this one seems interesting and this maybe because it based around the WWII era. One final comment ... I love the cover of this book. The cover looks like it could of been a print from oil painting. Thanks for hosting this giveaway opportunity.

Most readers are captivated by different country settings, I am one of them. Though only Irish on the 17th of March, I love reading all books set in Ireland, literary and historical fiction, "the Troubles," etc. Can't wait to read this one!
Please count me in! Thank you for hosting this giveaway...Hachette Books too!

I am not sure what the connection is with "Agatha Raison" on M.C. Beaton's website, but I liked the comment on her philosophy:
"Stop projecting. Tomorrow's a mystery. This is not a rehearsal. I'm on stage now."
Totally appropriate for her mystery-writing pseudonym.

Now, what particularly is interesting about Patricia Falvey's life journey, and one that resonates with me is the immigrant's longing for home..."I have left outside the borders anger, fear, and regret. I am at peace now for a time..."

She has more than 100 historical romance novels she has published under her own name and under several pseudonyms: Helen Crampton, Ann Fairfax, Jennie Tremaine, and Charlotte Ward. But M.C. Beaton is the pseudonym she reserves for her mystery novels.

I saw this book on Goodreads and thought it sounded so good!It seems to have a great combination of coming-of-age story, fighting family and the system, love and war. I cannot wait to read it!

I learned on the author's website that she was born in Glasgow, Scotland. I find this interesting because my family is from Scotland and I had the wonderful opportunity to visit there about ten years ago. It is a beautiful city!

Oh my! Will have to buy this one if I don't win it.
The cover, the story setting and time period draw me to this book like a magnet! My father was in England and Ireland, flying from there for reconnaisance missions. He never forgot how wonderful the people were and the beautiful scenery. I still need to fulfill my promise to him to go back as a vistor.
My eyes slipped down to the information about the author. She spends half her time in Dallas, I am in that general area and half in Armaugh (where some of my ancestors lived!

My Twitter name is CarolNWong(at)aol(dot)com
I found the author's website. She had to give her wishes to be an author when she was younger because of her financial situation. Then, 30 years later, she gave up her job as a CPA and went back to writing.
There is a great interview with the author on the page that you can listen to. The author was fascinated by family tales of the linen mills. She researched it and learned a lot about the working condition at the linen mills. I was really interested that because another part of my father's ancestors worked at the gingham mills in Carlisle, England. Those mills went out of business after the Civil War because gingham was no longer used for the house slaves in the South. It is amazing how everything is connected.

Well, there's not a whole lot above that I DON't like! I like the setting of 1941 Northern Ireland, strong women who know how to get what they want and love stories. This one is going on my TBR list--if I don't win it here first.
