MY THOUGHTS/REVIEW:
This is a eye-opening little book that you will read quickly and find yourself referring to it often. As someone who writes for others to read, I'll be first to tell you that I am not a "stickler" about word rules as author Mignon Fogarty writes about being. I write and talk the way I do and TRY to stick to the rules but often even when I grammar check, I disagree with a suggestion to an error because it "doesn't sound right to me". Favorites of mine in the book: a lot/allot and gray/grey...who knew gray is the American spelling and grey is the British (all of you knew but me? Wow!) Each word is on one page with most having a "Dirty Little Trick" at the bottom on how to remember how it is to be used. A very useful and clearly written book that I recommend keeping right by your computer!
101 WORDS EVERY HIGH SCHOOL
GRADUATE NEEDS TO KNOW
Millions of people around the world communicate better thanks to Mignon Fogarty, aka Grammar Girl, whose top-rated weekly grammar podcast has been downloaded more than 30 million times. Now she’s turning her attention to improving our vocabulary—one word at a time.
Not sure whether your post-high school vocabulary is up to snuff? This handy reference guide is a great starting point for ensuring you know the words that will help you impress your college professors, hold your own among your peers, write killer papers, and simply sound articulate--a skill that will benefit you for years to come.
Full of clear, straightforward definitions and fun quotations from luminaries such as J.D. Salinger and Susan B. Anthony, to characters such as Marge and Homer Simpson, this highly-useable guidebook gives you the confidence to succeed and sets you up for a lifetime of success.
MY THOUGHTS/REVIEW:
Fogarty explains that even if you weren't taught these words in high school they help with college entrance exams and interviews. Also, using these words in your vocabulary will show you are a well educated person. By listing the words alphabetically, readers will easily find examples to show that perhaps their high school classes DIDN'T teach these words. I questioned the fact that I have an MS degree after realizing there were many I didn't know, let alone use. Again, the book is very useful and I particularly like that the example given with each on how to use the word is taken from quotations. From ad hoc to zeal, I am sure you will find words you use and those you should use. Hegemony (commonly used to describe power of one place over another), Quixote (comes from Don Quixote), and Schadenfreude (Phew! enough to just spell it) should become the "word of the day" or at the very least as a review of words you know and rarely use but should! This is also a quick read and again, I recommend keeping it near your computer!

Incredibly fun video. I cannot give a thing to my mother without her coming back with it highlighted in red ink fixing all the little errors I make. These would make great books for me. I can see how she would start seeing errors all over the world. My mom and I owned a stationery store for eight years and we know the names of millions of typestyles that we see everywhere.
My son has been listening to her podcasts for awhile now. He loves her books. It is so interesting that we often take our language for granted. I know these books would be helpful.

When I purchased Grammar girl last year, it gave me so much confidence in my writing. I was pleasantly surprised that the rules of grammar I've stuck with for the passed years have not dulled (too much) since my intense literary classes in high school. I had one of those teachers who pushed me to be a writer with substance with the dry sarcasm of Kevin Spacey. Giveaway or not, these two books WILL be a part of my grammar library.
