AUDIO BOOK CHOICE.....
ONLY TIME WILL TELL
THE CLIFTON CHRONICLES
BY JEFFREY ARCHER
ABOUT THE AUDIO BOOK:
From the internationally bestselling author of Kane and Abel and A Prisoner of Birth comes Only Time Will Tell, the first in an ambitious new series that tells the story of one family across generations, across oceans, from heartbreak to triumph.
The epic tale of Harry Clifton’s life begins in 1920, with the words “I was told that my father was killed in the war.” A dock worker in Bristol, Harry never knew his father, but he learns about life on the docks from his uncle, who expects Harry to join him at the shipyard once he’s left school. But then an unexpected gift wins him a scholarship to an exclusive boys’ school, and his life will never be the same again.
As he enters into adulthood, Harry finally learns how his father really died, but the awful truth only leads him to question, was he even his father? Is he the son of Arthur Clifton, a stevedore who spent his whole life on the docks, or the firstborn son of a scion of West Country society, whose family owns a shipping line?
This introductory novel in Archer’s ambitious series The Clifton Chronicles includes a cast of colorful characters and takes us from the ravages of the Great War to the outbreak of the Second World War, when Harry must decide whether to take up a place at Oxford or join the navy and go to war with Hitler’s Germany. From the docks of working-class England to the bustling streets of 1940 New York City, Only Time Will Tell takes readers on a journey through to future volumes, which will bring to life one hundred years of recent history to reveal a family story that neither the reader nor Harry Clifton himself could ever have imagined.

PRAISE FOR ONLY TIME WILL TELL:
MY REVIEW/THOUGHTS:
My favorite Jeffrey Archer book, KANE & ABEL, has met its match in THE CLIFTON CHRONICLES: ONLY TIME WILL TELL. Having written so many thrillers over the years, Archer is an expert at grabbing the reader and keeping them spellbound. However, with ONLY TIME WILL TELL, it is the characters that really drew me in and not some action-filled thrill ride. This is writing one can luxuriate in filled with rich characters who you care so very much about that even the ones you don’t like so much hold your interest. I so enjoyed listening to Roger Allam read this audio book because his accent was so right on for this story and soothing because of it. I was able to create mental images of the story and am sure I could cast the parts in a movie from that if it were to be made.
THE CLIFTON CHRONICLES: ONLY TIME WILL TELL is centered on Harry Clifton, who is the young boy thought to be the son of a dockworker who was killed in the war. Harry is growing up with his mother and their relatives in the narrative that follows this youngster. Harry’s God given talent rewards him with a scholarship to a fine prep school as a choirboy and follows him as he decides whether to continue his education, or join the army when England enters World War II. The richly drawn characters in the story are so much a part of what Harry decides and where his choices lead him. Whether it is his mother, a proud, hard working waitress or his love interest who also is his best friend’s sister (and maybe more?), they all add to the mix. Harry’s mother plays an integral part in the story as she holds the key to Harry’s secret heritage and much of the story revolves around that with so many twists and turns that I listened long into the night on this one because I couldn’t stop.
A word of caution, my friends, this is the first installment (I believe there will be five) in THE CLIFTON CHRONICLES and you know what that means. For me, it means I will be first in line when the next book comes out. For all who read this superb story, I’d be surprised if Archer’s masterful writing didn’t hold you in the palm of his hand and then slap you down hard with the ending as it did to me! Now you know why I will be in that line for the next installment of THE CLIFTON CHRONICLES. Life-long readers will not want to miss ONLY TIME WILL TELL because it is the kind of story that started us on the path of loving the written word so don‘t miss it!
Roger has narrated audiobooks for numerous bestselling authors, including Jeffrey Archer, Ian McEwan, Ian Rankin, and Joseph Conrad. In reviewing the audiobook version of Jeffrey Archer’s Paths of Glory, Publishers Weekly declared, “Veteran actor Roger Allam brings an impressive range and energy to Archer's historical novel…. Allam's remarkable accents are the highlight of the audio book.” Roger lives in south-west London with his actress wife, Rebecca Saire, and their two young sons.

This book sounds really interesting. Harry, the main character travels a long way to learn more about his father, especially how he died. He find out more than her bargained for and questions if the man was really in father after all.
