MY THOUGHTS/REVIEW:
DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY: A BASIC MANUAL by Henry Horenstein is first of all a book you need not fear. I worried because I know very little about digital photography other than how to turn my camera on and push the button to take a picture. In DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY, readers will find the book starts from very basic information, like inserting a battery, on to different kinds of cameras and equipment and what they do. It is all explained in very easy to understand terms before going into more details in later chapters. Soon you can read about everything from exposure and lighting to editing and printing. There are lots of pencil drawn illustrations to guide the reader through, and the book is so well organized that it is easy to pick up when you need information and not feel like you have to read it all in one sitting or before you can begin to take a picture. I think if you are like me, however, who knows next to nothing about this subject, that you may just get involved enough the first time through that you do at least flip through the "harder" parts of the book. One thing that really drew me in were the amazing photographs of everything from people like Diane Sawyer, to country scenes of simple life all made more amazing by the way they were photographed. All these were fascinating to look at and to motivate you to read the book so you can take better photographs. Thank you to Henry Horenstein for not talking down to readers but rather to explaining everything in an appropriate and interesting way. This would be a great gift for any camera buff...new or old.

I love the pictures! Especially the jellfish. They are so difficult to shoot partly because they are constantly moving. I also listened to the audio selection where they discussed his photos of county music stars. Fascinating.

I loved that he thanked his mentor and teacher, the great Harry Callahan, for telling him to shoot what he loved and --- that even if he made a bad picture, he'd still have fun. Excellent advice to artists and everyone else, I think.
