THREE-DAY TOWN
THREE-DAY TOWN
BY MARGARET MARON
ABOUT THE BOOK:
Judge Deborah Knott and Sheriff's Deputy Dwight Bryant are on a train to New York, finally on a honeymoon after a year of marriage. January in New York might not be the perfect time to visit, but they'll take it. The trip is a Christmas present from Dwight's sister-in-law, who arranged for them to stay in an Upper West Side apartment for one week. While in New York, Deborah has been asked to deliver a package to Lt. Sigrid Harald of the NYPD. Sigrid offers to swing by the apartment to pick up the box, but when they reach the apartment, they discover that it is missing and the doorman has been murdered. Despite their best efforts to enjoy a blissful getaway, Deborah and Dwight soon find that they've teamed up with Sigrid and her team to catch the killer before he strikes again.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Margaret Maron grew up on a farm near Raleigh, North Carolina, but for many years lived in Brooklyn, New York. When she returned to her North Carolina roots with her artist-husband, Joe, she began thinking about a series based on her own background and went on to write Bootlegger's Daughter, a Washington Post bestseller and winner of the major mystery awards for 1993. Her next Deborah Knott novel, Southern Discomfort, was nominated for the Agatha Award for Best Novel; Shooting at Loons, which followed, received Agatha and Anthony Award nominations; and Up Jumps the Devil won the Agatha for Best Novel of 1996. Home Fires is her sixth Deborah Knott mystery.
MY GUEST REVIEW:
Thanks to Steve Capell for his review of THREE-DAY TOWN. Check out Steve's blog, TRUE MEDIA SOLUTIONS. Steve is a family man who loves to read and spend time with his lovely wife where they live in the Kansas City area. Best of all, Steve not only loves to read but has a way with words as he reviews books with honesty and great skill. Enjoy his review...and thank you, Steve!
Judge Deborah Knott and Sheriff's Deputy Dwight Bryant have decided to finally go on their much anticipated honeymoon in New York after a year of marriage. Dwight's sister-in-law arranged for them to stay in an Upper West Side apartment for one week. Deborah and Dwight's honeymoon is interrupted when the building superintendent is found murdered. Lieutenant Sigrid Harold along with Deborah are now trying to sort out the "who, what, and why" of this homicide. The plot thickens when there are multiple suspects, multiple missing persons, a kleptomaniac, and the fact that all men are not really men. As all this plays out Dwight and Deborah get to know many of their neighbors and at the same time enjoy pieces of their honeymoon between dead bodies and strange clues.
My thoughts:
Three-Day Town got off to a great start and plot twisted and turned like side winder snake in a dust storm. I liked that ... no.… I loved that! Margaret Maron's descriptive language kept me engaged throughout the book. I would of liked to give you a sample of some of her descriptive writing; however, this book was an A.R.C. and as such the publisher asked that no parts should be quoted. Trust me -- you will not be disappointed with the descriptive writing. The main character development is richly done. The only area that I would have liked more character development would be on some of the minor characters. While some of the minor characters were introduced well and they did come to life with their dialog they could have been more richly developed. The A.R.C. novel was 278 pages in length and with some additional character development the novel would still have been around 300 pages in length. That being said, the major characters were great and seemed to jump off of every page. Overall I really enjoyed this book and I will certainly be reading more from this author.
I have given this novel a 4 out of 5 rating.
Who should read this novel?
The eloquent language, clear voice, and intriguing themes will be a must read for any mystery reader.

I'm interested in this book because it's not every day you have a book where the heroine is a female judge married to a sherrif's deputy - she outranks him in regards to position, power and money.
