ABOUT THE BOOK:
Unsolvable cases...

Since former Marine Jack Morgan started Private, it has become the world's most effective investigation firm--sought out by the famous and the powerful to discreetly handle their most intimate problems. Private's investigators are the smartest, the fastest, and the most technologically advanced in the world--and they always uncover the truth.

Impossible murders...

When his former lover is found murdered in Jack Morgan's bed, he is instantly the number one suspect. While Jack is under police investigation, the mob strong-arms him into recovering $30 million in stolen pharmaceuticals for them. And the beautiful manager of a luxury hotel chain persuades him to quietly investigate a string of murders at her properties.

The #1 suspect is Jack Morgan!

While Jack is fighting for his life, one of his most trusted colleagues threatens to leave Private, and Jack realizes he is confronting the cleverest and most powerful enemies ever. With more action, more intrigue, and more twists than ever before, PRIVATE: #1 SUSPECT is James Patterson at his unstoppable best.

AN EXCERPT FROM PRIVATE: #1 SUSPECT:
One

A DARK SEDAN turned off Pacific Coast Highway and slipped into the driveway of a gated Malibu beach house worth, had to be, seven or eight million.

The driver buzzed down his window and passed an electronic entry key over the reader.

The pair of high wrought-iron gates rolled open, and the sedan pulled up to the garage doors, the gates closing smoothly behind it. The driver got out of his car and looked around.

He was a medium-height white guy in his thirties, short brown hair, wearing a denim jacket, khaki pants, rubber-soled shoes, latex gloves. He saw that the cool modern house was screened entirely by shrubbery and protective fencing, hiding it from the road and neighboring homes.

He approached the alcove that framed the front door, noted the security camera focused on him and the biometric keypad.

Returning to the car, the driver opened a back door and said, "Last stop, young lady."

MY THOUGHTS/REVIEW:
James Patterson teams up again with Maxine Paetro for his latest in PRIVATE: #1 SUSPECT. It has been a while since I listened to James Patterson on audio book but have really enjoyed audio books lately so thought I’d give it a try.

The general background for PRIVATE: #1 SUSPECT is easy to decipher and you don’t have to have read anything else to get what is going on here. Private is the name of Jack Morgan’s well known investigation firm. When Jack returns from a trip, he finds his former girlfriend in his bed, and both of them are dead tired but unfortunately for her, the emphasis is on dead. Jack becomes the prime suspect in her murder and you can tell right off that he is being set up. One thing leads to another and Jack fights to clear his name as well as to keep his business going.

Private is left with two main clients and although both come from very different backgrounds and have different problems for Jack to solve, their stories just didn’t grab me. I think the story of Jack would have been enough for me, as there were so many barely developed characters and weak subplots in PRIVATE: #1 SUSPECT that it was very difficult to follow. At times, I didn’t even care if I could follow it. I knew if I was reading print, I might leaf through pages to figure out what was going on. In this case, it made me even happier to be listening to an audio book where I couldn’t keep going back and forth to clarify things. Instead, I just let it play on knowing it would all come together in the end.

Mind you, I am a HUGE James Patterson fan and guess this is one that just wasn’t on my radar, but might very well be on yours. I have seen many positive reviews, so once again, I will say, judge for yourself as these are just my own thoughts and reactions. I am currently listening to the next Patterson audio book, PRIVATE GAMES due out February 13, and already liking it a whole lot more. Watch for my review of that soon, and judge for yourself if PRIVATE: #1 SUSPECT is for you or not.

I'm always willing to give a James Patterson book a read, but I will admit that some of his most recent co-authored books have been not as good as his earlier works. Thanks for the opportunity.

I, too, have found Patterson's work uneven lately so I was glas to see that this might not be his best work. I still want to try it so an audio version would allow me to multi-task while listening.
