CLOBBERED BY CAMEMBERT
A CHEESE SHOP MYSTERY
BY AVERY AAMES

ABOUT THE BOOK:
Charlotte Bessette—proprietor of Fromagerie Bessette, affectionately known in Providence, Ohio, as the Cheese Shop—is busy setting up her tent for the town’s Winter Wonderland faire, where she’ll offer fine wines and scrumptious cheeses. In the midst of the preparations, Charlotte meets an old friend of her mother, Kaitlyn Clydesdale, who has come back to Providence with plans to start a new honeybee farm.

When Kaitlyn is found dead in the cottage of Charlotte’s assistant Rebecca, suspicion falls on Rebecca’s boyfriend, a honeybee farmer himself. Charlotte knows this beekeeper wouldn’t hurt a fly, so she sets out to find the real killer. While the town buzzes with gossip, can Charlotte catch the culprit without getting stung herself?

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Avery Aames is the pseudonym for Daryl Wood Gerber. As Avery, she writes A Cheese Shop Mystery Series, the first of which, "The Long Quiche Goodbye", won the Agatha Award for best first novel. The series is set in idyllic Holmes County, Ohio, and features Charlotte Bessette, a feisty cheese shop owner with a colorful extended family.

Daryl has also had short stories published and she created the format for the successful TV series "Out of this World" that ran for four years in first-run syndication. Daryl podcasts some of her suspense/thriller work on her website. She is a member of Sisters in Crime, its internet group Guppies, Mystery Writers of America, Romance Writers of America and the International Thriller Writers Association.

Prior to writing, Daryl was an actress in Los Angeles. A fun tidbit for mystery buffs: she co-starred on the popular series, "Murder, She Wrote" and "Matlock". Daryl graduated from Stanford University. She enjoys golfing, swimming, photography, gardening, gourmet cooking, and has been known to jump out of a perfectly good airplane.
She has been happily married for over twenty-five years and has a grown son who has flown the coop.

FROM THE BERKLEY PRIME CRIME & OBSIDIAN NEWSLETTER:
CLOBBERED BY CAMEMBERT Q&A with Avery Aames
1)  In CLOBBERED BY CAMEMBERT, we find Cheese Shop proprietor Charlotte Bessette setting up for the Winter Wonderland faire and hunting down a killer. What inspired Charlotte’s character?
As a girl, I devoured Nancy Drew books and Agatha Christie novels. I think Charlotte might be an amalgam of Nancy and Miss Marple. She’s young, but not too young (30’s) and she’s impulsive (but not too impulsive), and she’s smart. Charlotte is also a mix-and-match of a number of people that I know, myself included. She lost her parents young and was raised by her paternal grandparents. They are loving, caring, adorable people. Charlotte has acquired the best of their personalities from them. Like her grandmother, Charlotte is a fixer by nature. She wants everyone to be happy and content. In the first book, she has taken in her nieces and cousin, whose wife up and left him and the twin girls. [Actually the nieces are cousins-once-removed, but that is a mouthful for a book, don’t you think?] Anyway, she takes them into her home, and they become part of her extended family. Many of my friends and I enjoy this same set-up. We have extended families that consist not only of our own children, but stepchildren, nephews, nieces, coworkers, and more. One of Charlotte’s coworkers, Rebecca, a transformed Amish girl who is into the Internet and all sorts of crime TV shows, has become a sister to Charlotte. When Charlotte’s grandmother is suspected of murder in the first book, Rebecca urges Charlotte to get involved. How can Charlotte refuse?
2)  What are your favorite cheeses?
I have so many!!! I can’t believe how many new cheeses I’ve tasted in the past two years. At least two hundred. The first that I adore is Manchego. It is a nutty, firm sheep’s cheese from Spain. I adore Delice de Bourgogne. It is a triple cream cow’s milk cheese that is shamelessly rich. Some might liken it to Fromage d’Affinois, which I also adore. I recently made a baked Camembert (and shared the recipe on my blog Mystery Lovers Kitchen). It was so easy and so special for a party crowd. Delicious served with jam. And I crave St. Agur Blue cheese and Rogue River Blue, both are blue-veined cow’s milk cheeses. Superb alone. Delicious melted into a fondue or incorporated into a grilled cheese sandwich or salad.

It didn't take much to get me interested in this book because I just read "The Long Quiche Goodbye" and fell in love with the characters and the town. I think the bee and honey angle of the story should be fun.

On the author's website there are some wonderful pictures of Holmes County where the books take place to help get the setting in your mind. There are also town maps for the first 2 books of the series---I wonder if another will be added for this book.
