THE DARK ROSE
THE DARK ROSE
ABOUT THE BOOK:
The brilliant new thriller from the author of the critically acclaimed debut, The Poison Tree.
Paul was led into a life of crime by his boyhood protector, a bully named Daniel; but one night, what started as a petty theft turned into a grisly murder. Now, at nineteen, Paul must bear witness against his friend to avoid prison. Louisa's own dark secrets led her to flee a desperate infatuation gone wrong many years before. Now she spends her days steeped in history, renovating the grounds of a crumbling Elizabethan garden. But her fragile peace is shattered when she meets Paul; he's the spitting image of the one person she never thought she'd see again.
These two, scarred and solitary, begin a secret affair. Louisa starts to believe she can again find the happiness she had given up on. But neither of them can outrun his violent past.
A story of secrets and guilt set among the ruins of a sixteenth- century English garden, The Dark Rose explores the extremes of obsessive love and loyalty, devotion and desperation. Like Kelly's critically acclaimed debut novel, The Poison Tree, this fantastically creepy, atmospheric novel thrills until the final shocking moments.
PRAISE FOR THE DARK ROSE:
“A terrific suspense debut, reminiscent of another British woman’s auspicious bow: Daphne DuMaurier’s Rebecca. This one gets the writer’s ultimate bit of praise: I wish I had written it.”
—Stephen King on THE POISON TREE by Erin Kelly
“Kelly made a name for herself with The Poison Tree; get this follow-up wherever twisty suspense is popular.”
“Kelly follows up her outstanding debut (The Poison Tree, 2010) with another suspenseful tale that keeps the reader on edge until the last page…Kelly is a master at teasing her readers by doling out just enough backstory, a little bit at a time, to keep the suspense high.”
“Stunning novel of psychological suspense…The title, which alludes to the way a new rose won’t bloom where an old one has died, perfectly evokes the story’s theme: unhealed damage inevitably stunts fresh growth. With its rich intertwining of viewpoints and time frames, its nuances of character and class, its sustained suspense and its gothic/contemporary fusion, this harrowing novel is a work of true talent.”
—Publishers Weekly, starred review
“Kelly writes perceptively and chillingly about the long shadows cast by tragic mistakes...[Kelly] shows considerable promise”
—The Daily Telegraph (UK)

AN EXCERPT FROM THE DARK ROSE:
There wasn’t much vodka, but that was fine: She needed it only to give her courage to drink the whiskey. Her legs already unsteady, she climbed onto her bed and reached into the overhead cupboard. The deceptively small door panel concealed a space that went back for two or three feet, and she lost her arm up to the shoulder as she groped around in the carefully arranged stacks of bags and boxes. Eventually her fingers closed on the handle of the right bag. She yanked it with such force that she fell back on the bed, the plastic carrier landing on her lap. A second later, the whiskey bottle rolled out. She tipped the other contents of the bag out like a child upending a Christmas stocking, although there were no surprises in here. She spread her things about her on the quilt, wondering where to begin, aware of a quickening at her throat and wrists and between her breasts. She started with the little green vial of vetiver oil, simply unscrewing the lid and inhaling. It was still a quarter full.
