MY THOUGHTS/REVIEW:
Michael Palmer can always spin a tale that keeps me interested but in OATH OF OFFICE he had me on the edge of my seat throughout the entire audio book. This is a thriller made more so because of the stark reality of how close to the truth this one appears to be and that should be enough to scare all of us! It begins when Dr. John Meacham appears to become unhinged and goes on a shooting rampage in his office killing patients, fellow workers, and even his partner. From this introduction alone, I was hooked. The storyline charged ahead from there and never let up.
Dr. Lou Welcome understood how many in the medical profession felt when they became addicted to different kinds of substances because he had been on that road himself. As part of his rehabilitation program, Dr. Welcome works at Physicians Wellness Center to help others with this problem and John Meacham was one of them. Lou knew John was clean. So what could have set him off? There had to be some other contributing factor. Dr. Lou begins to investigate and runs into a similar experience while driving with Meacham’s widow one day soon after the horrible incident. She acts out dangerously and irrationally to a simple fixation she experiences, but it ends as quickly as it came upon her. From there, Lou Welcome begins to find others who are showing these illogical traits and has to find where they are coming from. What do these people all have in common? Their unexplained anger can turn deadly but often the person is unaware of what happened after it ends.
A visit to King’s Ridge Chief of Police doesn’t yield any answers as the Chief tells Lou there is no basis for his claims; no facts, just speculation. Welcome meets Dr. Darlene Mallory, who is the First Lady of the United States, only to find that she is disturbed by some similar concerns. Together with Dr. Welcome, Darlene Mallory realizes her suspicions have some basis and they investigate further. Where this takes these two both personally and professionally is a high powered, all too real, thrill ride.
Michael Palmer has given readers such well developed characters that jump out at you from the pages you find yourself forced to keep turning. Where the plotline takes this mystery is so inspired, and written so brilliantly and with such intensity, that you can’t turn away even when you feel you have to. I know there was one part in particular that was enough to give me nightmares. I can imagine a film being made of OATH OF OFFICE with parts for me that would be too terrifying to watch! More than that, Palmer has written a story so close to being reality that you will find yourselves asking if it could happen, and if so what would be done about it? These are questions you may not want to have answers to but you will at least want to read OATH OF OFFICE to see for yourself.

I enjoy a good medical thriller--but one with a political twist should be VERY interesting.

I found it fascinating that the old canard that you can't get an agent if you've never published before isn't true and loved that his agent told him that if she waited for Stephen King to change agents she'd starve.
